AAP slams ‘mismanagement by 4-engine BJP govt' over deaths, water crisis in Delhi amid heavy rain

Indian Express5 days ago
With heavy rain lashing the Capital on Saturday, deaths of eight persons in two separate incidents, flooding of the Giri Nagar pumping station in South Delhi's Kalkaji halting water supply to several areas, and waterlogging in multiple parts of the city brought the BJP government under criticism from the AAP.
Leader of Opposition and former CM Atishi said the flooding of the pumping station left thousands of residents in Kalkaji, Giri Nagar, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extension facing severe water shortage. 'Mismanagement by the four-engine BJP govt has not only submerged Delhi roads, but caused a water crisis in Kalkaji. The Giri Nagar pumping station is completely submerged. And the people of Giri Nagar, Kalkaji, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extn are facing several days of water crisis,' she posted on X, along with a copy of her letter to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
In her letter, Atishi wrote, 'Just a few hours of rain have brought Delhi to a grinding halt. Roads are waterlogged, traffic is at a standstill and even more shocking is that in many parts of Delhi water has entered people's homes. The pumping station of the Giri Nagar UnderGround Reservoir (UGR) is fully submerged in water… So no water is being supplied to the Kalkaji, Giri Nagar, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extension.' She called the situation 'the direct result of administrative negligence' and urged the Chief Minister to instruct PWD and Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh to restore supply immediately.
The heavy rain that caused the flooding began late Friday night, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgrading alerts through the early hours of Saturday from yellow to orange and then to a red alert by 6.20 am. By 8.30 am, Safdarjung recorded 78.7 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, while Pragati Maidan logged 100.3 mm. The IMD warned of potential waterlogging, traffic congestion, and reduced visibility across the city.
The AAP, in an official statement on Saturday evening, also attacked the BJP-led Delhi government over citywide waterlogging. The party's Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged 'corruption worth crores in desilting works' and linked it to the Jaitpur incident in which seven people, including two children, died after a wall collapsed amid heavy rain. He further alleged that a 2.5-year-old child drowned in an open manhole, saying, 'I had warned CM Rekha Gupta that opening manholes during rain is a dangerous shortcut.'
Senior leader Manish Sisodia, as per the statement, called the Jaitpur incident 'deeply painful' and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. Atishi also posted videos of waterlogged roads in Palam, Dhaula Kuan and Saket, stating, 'On Raksha Bandhan, the entire city is submerged… The collapse of governance under Rekha Gupta's government is preventing brothers from meeting their sisters.'
AAP MLAs Sanjeev Jha and Kuldeep Kumar, also questioned the government's claims of monsoon preparedness and blamed the BJP to be responsible for lapses in civic bodies.

Vote theft through scientific means is dangerous to democracy in all States: Congress MP

'Vote theft' through scientific means by the Bharatiya Janata Party is dangerous to democracy in all States, said Virudhunagar MP B. Manickam Tagore. Addressing reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Tagore said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has exposed how one lakh votes were added in Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency before the 2024 Parliamentary election. 'This had led to the BJP winning the seat with a small margin of 30,000 votes,' he said. The BJP had claimed that it would win 400 seats in the Lok Sabha election, but ended up winning only 239 seats. Similar, 'vote theft' had been done in 48 other constituencies too, he said. Hence, the BJP Government should not be allowed to continue in power in the Centre, he said. When the opposition parties pointed to this irregularity and sought to discuss the issue, their demand was rejected in the Parliament. Three hundred MPs of the opposition parties marched towards the Election Commission office in Delhi. However, the Election Commission did not meet them to clarify, he said. The Congress MP said that it was anti-democratic exercise to conduct Assembly election in Bihar after deleting 18% of the votes of the opposition parties by way of Special Intensive Revision of voters list. In this backdrop, Mr. Rahul Gandhi has planned to take out 'Voters' Right' yatra in Bihar for 17 days from August 17. 'While the BJP partyman gets five votes in the election, it is only one for the common man. For the opposition parties, even that one vote is denied,' he said. Stating that such scientific way of stealing votes was dangerous in other States where BJP was in power, he said the Election Commission was hand in glove with the BJP in such an irregularity.

‘Violence against police during Nabanna Abhijan': BJP MLA Ashok Dinda gets anticipatory bail, state seeks nod to FIR against Adhikari

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to former cricketer and BJP MLA Ashok Dinda. Multiple FIRs had been filed by the Kolkata Police against Dinda and other party members in the backdrop of the alleged violence on August 9 during the Nabanna Abhijan, a rally held to observe the first death anniversary of a junior doctor who was raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. The petitions were heard by the single bench of Justice Jay Sengupta. Senior counsel Billwadal Bhattacharya, appearing for Ashok Dinda, submitted, 'The allegation is that the petitioner was surrounded by BJP members and giving a provocative speech.' Senior counsel Kalyan Banerjee, appearing for the State, submitted, 'Every day they say they will kill the police, that is unacceptable.' Hearing both sides, the judge ordered, 'It is alleged that the petitioner gave a provocative speech on the date of incident which, according to the FIR, was derogatory, provocative and a threat to law and order machinery. No offence is made out, a custodial interrogation is not required. Considering the nature of the allegation, anticipatory bail is given. The petitioner is to cooperate with the investigation, meet the IO as and when required, and not to threaten the witnesses.' Meanwhile, BJP leader Kali Khatik has been granted interim relief by the Calcutta High Court till August 22. The court observed, 'The allegation is that he (Khatik) disobeyed public servants, (he) does not require custodial interrogation. Let the petitioner comply with the notice on Monday at the said police station. The matter is listed for August 21; the petitioner shall not be arrested till August 22.' On the matter regarding the quashing of the FIRs filed by former BJP MP Arjun Singh and BJP leader Shankudeb Panda, the court stated that this will be heard on August 21. The state also sought permission from the Calcutta High Court to file an FIR against Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in the Nabanna Abhijan case on Thursday. The state's counsel alleged that Adhikari had violated the law and order situation on August 9. The matter was referred to Justice Jay Sengupta's bench for a fresh application, but Adhikari's counsel stated that Justice Jay Sengupta's court does not have the jurisdiction to hear this case. The matter is to be heard on Monday. In 2022, a bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha of the Calcutta High Court had granted protection to Adhikari. A stay was ordered on 26 FIRs filed by the state police. It also directed that permission from the court would be required to file an FIR against Adhikari. On Wednesday, Dinda and Khatik had moved the Calcutta High Court seeking anticipatory bail, while Singh and Panda did so for the quashing of the cases against them. On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police had summoned Dinda, asking him to appear at the New Market police station on August 18 at 11 am. According to Kolkata Police, seven cases were lodged – five by Kolkata Police and two by Howrah Police – in connection with the violence during the Nabanna Abhijan. Four FIRs have been registered at the New Market Police Station and one at the Hare Street Police Station under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police. The FIRs were lodged for allegedly violating High Court orders by not going to R R Avenue and taking a procession towards Park Street, for allegedly creating a ruckus at the 'Rakhi' stall of another political party, allegedly assaulting a police constable and causing head injuries, allegedly vandalizing the office of the hawkers' union, and allegedly damaging the camera of a mediaperson and 'confining' him. Meanwhile, a second arrest was made by the New Market Police late on Wednesday night for allegedly assaulting the police. The accused has been identified as BJP worker Mahindrachandra Saha, who hails from Naihati.

In Attack On Samajwadi Party, Yogi Adityanath's Frog And Rooster Analogies

Lucknow: Taking a series of jabs at the Samajwadi Party during a 24-hour discussion on Vision 2047 for Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said the party's slogan of PDA stood for ' Parivar (family) Development Authority' and that had limited its perspective like a frog in a well. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had coined PDA for ' Pichhda ' (backwards), Dalits (Scheduled Castes) and ' Alpsankhyak ' (minorities) and said that would be the focus of the organisation. Leader of the Opposition in the UP Assembly Mata Prasad Pandey had earlier asked why Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had a problem with PDA when the communities had played a key role in the growth of Uttar Pradesh. When it was his turn to speak, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister said, "Every Assembly constituency should see development, and the benefits of welfare schemes must reach everyone without discrimination... You are confined only to your families. Your ' Parivar Development Authority' approach is akin to what Swami Vivekananda had said about ' Kupa Manduka ' (frog in the well). The world is moving ahead on the path of competition, but you are still confined to your families." Speaking about the Leader of the Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey, who is also from the Samajwadi Party, Chief Minister Adityanath also made a rooster reference. "The Leader of the Opposition is quite experienced. If he speaks on his own, he speaks correctly and well. When he speaks under the influence of others, then he also remembers the rooster. The leaders of the opposition party were saying very good things," the BJP leader said. Chief Minister Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh was once the most prosperous state in the country and had seen a decline since 1960. "Plans were made. Announcements were made. But there was no willpower. People could not get even basic facilities. Crime and lawlessness were prevalent. The pain of migration... children dying due to poverty and lack of treatment, are these not true?" he asked. Highlighting his government's achievements, he added, "After 2017, the double-engine government (BJP-led governments at both the state and Centre) established the rule of law. There has been zero tolerance towards crime and criminals. Schemes are implemented without discrimination or appeasement, and UP's contribution to the national GDP has increased from 8 per cent to 9.5 per cent."
