Time of India11-07-2025
At 95, Sally Froelich is living proof that age is just a number. From working at Macy's in the 1950s to hosting her own talk show for over 20 years, Froelich's life has been full of charm, purpose, and positivity. Now, she's part of the SuperAgers Family Study, a major research effort by the American Federation for Aging Research, trying to uncover the secrets of healthy ageing.
The study, highlighted by Healthline, involves 600 participants aged 95 and above, including their children and their children's spouses. According to Dr Sofiya Milman, who leads the research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the aim is to discover the genes responsible for exceptional longevity.
But Sally's story reminds us: healthy habits still matter. Here are her 9 tips for a long and healthy life, as featured in Healthline.

1. Eat mindfully
'I eat three meals a day. I don't overeat,' says Froelich. A balanced, consistent diet supports energy levels, immune health, and weight management.
2. Avoid harmful habits
Sally never smoked and drinks alcohol only in moderation. Experts agree that avoiding smoking and heavy drinking reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer.

3. Maintain a stable weight
Her weight hasn't changed in 50 years. Froelich says, 'My body shape changed, but the number didn't.' Stable weight helps protect joints and reduce disease risk.
4. Stay physically active
She still plays golf two to three times a week and exercises six days a week. Her routine includes stretching, sit-ups, and light weight training, all great for heart and muscle health.
5. Keep your brain busy
From bridge games to audiobooks, Froelich keeps her mind sharp. Staying mentally active helps prevent memory loss and cognitive decline.
6. Stay socially connected
She often dines out, talks to her children, and regularly checks in with her grandchildren on Zoom. 'If I've been inside too long, I walk around the block,' she says.
7. Enjoy the little things
'Do what makes you happy. Eat ice cream and delicious chocolate,' she says. Finding joy in simple pleasures boosts emotional wellbeing.
8. Look after yourself
'Keep your hair and nails done,' she advises. Self-care boosts confidence and mood, which also helps reduce stress.
9. Think positively about ageing
Experts featured in Healthline say that a positive mindset about ageing can extend your life by up to 7.5 years.
Genes vs Lifestyle: What matters more?
Dr Milman explains that while many SuperAgers share certain genes, like those affecting HDL cholesterol or growth hormone, lifestyle still plays a role. 'They didn't eat, drink, or exercise differently than their peers, but they lived much longer,' she told Healthline.
However, Dr Rosanne Leipzig, geriatrician and author of Honest Aging, adds that genetics only explain about 20–40% of lifespan. 'The rest is shaped by environment, access to healthcare, childhood diet, and even your neighbourhood.'
So, while not everyone may reach 95 like Sally Froelich, her life reminds us that joy, movement, and connection can go a long way.

Tharu community: A blend of age-old culture and modernity

1 2 Patna: With women empowerment being a big theme in today's social and political discourse, there is an indigenous community in Bihar where women have long been enjoying an empowered lifestyle. The women, inhabiting 'Tharuhat' in the 'terai' region along Bihar-Nepal border (mostly in West Champaran district), are not only economically self-dependent but also manage their families well. As the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is commemorated on Aug 9, a lesson or two can be learned from the lifestyle of not just these women but the entire Tharu community, which resides in six 'tapa' (zones) in West Champran. The Tharu people are an ethnic group indigenous to the 'terai' region in Bihar and are recognised as a scheduled tribe by the Govt of India. They say they are about 2.5 lakh in number, but the govt figure is slightly less. Secretary of Tharu Kalyan Mahasangh, Deep Narayan Prasad, said that women have a high reputation in their society, and enjoy more social and economic rights in their family system, compared to others. Like, the 'Tharuhat' women play an active role in fishing, chasing animals away, business and above all choosing their life partners. The women of the Tharu community have also formed self-help groups pursuing different businesses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Meet The Pillow That Changes Sleep Apnea Sufferers Lives, It's Genius! These special soaps are in high demand among the health-conscious people living in metropolitan cities, said Suman Devi, the leader of a self-help group at Kadmahiya village in Bagaha-II block. Soap manufacturing has, of late, emerged as a popular cottage industry in this area, she added. In recent times, education has played an important role in their socio-economic development. Secretary of Bhartiya Tharu Kalyan Mahasangh, Rabindra Prasad, however, regretted that the women of this region are facing great difficulties in pursuing their higher education as there is not a single college in the entire Tharuhat. While some guardians afford to send their wards to distant places for higher education, a vast majority are compelled to discontinue their education after Class XII, he said. Deep Narayan said that the Tharu culture is very eco-friendly, and all their practices and religious activities are deeply related to nature. Their residence, food, clothes, art, religion, economy and many other parts of life are nature-based, and they try their best to maintain the ecological balance. Tharu people worship mainly their tribal Goddess 'Bhumsen' (Mother Earth). Marriages in Tharu community are considered an act of god, and hence both bride and groom are worshipped at the time of marriage. No dowry is demanded. When the marriage is fixed, a token amount of Rs 5 or 11 is offered for the marriage, said Deep Narayan. Rabindra said that about 500 marriages are solemnised every year in the community. Brahma Kamal: The Divine Plant Every Spiritual Home Needs , Know Why Vastu Recommends It

Brahma Kamal is not only a flower; it has a godly power. Many spiritual traditions hold this beautiful blossom in high regard, and its roots can be found in ancient Himalayan wisdom. It has the energy of creativity, purity, and a greater level of awareness. The name Brahma Kamal comes from Lord Brahma, who founded the universe. It carries the unique resonance of divine timing and spiritual awakening. It blooms once a year, at night, in stillness. This is a great reminder that transformation happens within of us when we are calm and in tune with the universe. People are more sensitive these days, and the planets move faster, therefore it's not a good idea to bring Brahma Kamal into your area. It is necessary. Brahma Kamal Holds Divine Spiritual Power Brahma Kamal is a real-life example of spiritual truth. In Hindu legend, Lord Brahma himself holds the blossom. It means that you were born with a divine purpose and potential. It blooms in peace and quiet, away from noise, to remind us that true clarity is not found outside, but inside. Keeping Brahma Kamal in your home as a plant or a spiritual image will instantly make the energy in your room stronger. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like SRM Online MBA | India's top ranked institute SRM Online Undo It offers peace, makes you more conscious of your spiritual side, and opens the door to divine gifts. This isn't a myth; it's how energy works. Holy vibrations have holy effects. Perfectly Aligned with the Current Planetary Energies The energy around us is changing. When Rahu is in Aquarius, you want to learn about new things, technology, and the world around you. Brahma Kamal takes you back to the middle. It helps you calm down when you're overly excited, get your head back on track, and focus your thoughts. Ketu in Leo says you should stop being egotistical, proud, and wanting attention. Brahma Kamal backs this release. It tells you to stop the noise and get back to your inner self, which is grounded, humble, and spiritually connected. Saturn in Pisces, on the other hand, is helping you deal with more complicated feelings. You need to take care of your own world. Brahma Kamal shows this energy. The slow, holy blooming of this plant encourages discipline, patience, and spiritual growth. As Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus constantly changing things, Brahma Kamal keeps your energy field steady, clean, and connected to the divine order. It Actively Clears Negative Energy and Elevates Your Aura One of the best spiritual protectors you may have in your home is Brahma Kamal. It gets rid of trapped energy, clears out emotional baggage, and fills your space with tranquil, sattvic (pure) vibrations. It helps you meditate more profoundly, increases your intuition, and strengthens your energy field. People that put Brahma Kamal in their sacred spaces say they feel more at peace, have clearer thoughts, sleep better, and have stronger emotions. If you're feeling spiritually trapped, emotionally confused, or full of energy, Brahma Kamal is the answer. The sound waves don't only quiet you down; they transform you. It changes how you think and act, and it clears up the mess. Where to Place Brahma Kamal for Maximum Impact As a Vastu practitioner, I can say with confidence that the northeast corner of your home, the Ishaan zone, is the best place for Brahma Kamal. This direction is in charge of spiritual progress, wisdom, and energy from above. Brahma Kamal is more powerful for healing when you put it here. You can also put it in your puja room, meditation area, or by a window that faces east or north. These settings combine light, purpose, and the movement of energy. Don't put it close to the front entrance or in places where there are a lot of people. This plant does well in calm, sacred energy, just like your spirit. People should put it where they pray, sing mantras, or honor silence. Brahma Kamal Is a Living Astrological Remedy Brahma Kamal isn't only a sign; it really acts as an astrological remedy. It soothes Rahu's hyperactivity, helps Ketu feel more connected, and provides Saturn in Pisces the emotional depth it needs. It maintains your energy field stable while you're busy, such during transits, dasha periods, or when you're spiritually exhausted. It also works well with the Moon's energy, which helps heal emotional wounds, and Jupiter's energy, which helps individuals grow and learn. If you have any bad planets in your life, bring Brahma Kamal into your home and let its energy aid you. Use It in Rituals for Protection, Healing, and Manifestation Include Brahma Kamal in your rituals. Give it to gods and goddesses like Lord Vishnu, Goddess Durga, or Lord Shiva during puja. During Full Moon or Amavasya meditations, use it to clear away karmic barriers. Put it next to you while you create goals or perform spiritual sadhana. It makes your action more sacred and transmits your desire to the gods. This flower can listen. It answers. It shows up.
