ASIA RICE-Vietnam rates rise on Philippine stockpiling; India prices steady

* ASIA RICE-Vietnam rates rise on Philippine stockpiling; India prices steady Philippines will suspend rice imports for 60 days from Sept 1 * Weather conducive for paddy crop, Mumbai-based dealer says * Demand for Thai rice remains quiet, trader says Aug 14 - Vietnamese rice prices rose this week as buyers in the Philippines stockpiled ahead of an import suspension deadline, while Indian rates held steady near a three-year low. Vietnam's 5% broken rice was offered at $395 a metric ton on Thursday, up from $391 a week ago. Traders said buyers from the Philippines are rushing to make purchases before the country suspends rice imports for 60 days starting September 1, as the government seeks to protect local farmers affected by falling prices during the harvest season. Traders also said that Vietnam's domestic supplies were running low as the summer-autumn harvest ends. India's 5% broken parboiled variety was quoted at $369 to $374 a ton, unchanged from the previous week when it hit its lowest level since August 2022, while Indian 5% broken white rice was priced at $360 to $368 a ton this week. "The weather is largely conducive for paddy crop, this year's production is expected to be even higher than last year's record harvest," said a Mumbai-based dealer. Thailand's 5% broken rice tumbled to $355 to $360 a ton, down from last week's price of $370 on weakening demand, traders said. Domestic and overseas demand has been very quiet, with buyers anticipating increased supply in the market, which could drive prices even lower, another Thai trader said. Meanwhile in Bangladesh, prices continue to remain high despite renewed imports and record harvests since November last year, which pushed reserves to nearly 2 million tons by July. Data from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh showed prices remained 15 to 20% higher compared with the previous year. Roads crumble, craters surface in Noida after rain

Noida: Intermittent rainfall over the past few days has stalled repair work on the Mahamaya Flyover's expansion joints and left several key stretches pockmarked with rough patches and potholes. Officials now say that the project will now be finished by Aug 31. Meanwhile, key stretches from Kalindi Kunj to Sector 37 have developed fresh potholes, slowing traffic and increasing the risk of accidents. A speed breaker near the Botanical Garden metro station is also badly damaged, adding to commuter woes. In May this year, Noida Authority began repairing the Mahamaya Flyover's expansion joints and said the project would be completed within two months. Vijay Rawal, deputy general manager (Civil) at the Noida Authority, said, "The road sees heavy traffic during morning and evening hours. The traffic police do not allow the project work during peak hours. Therefore, the work has been delayed as we can only conduct it in the afternoon. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? The 450-metre-long flyover, built in 2006 to facilitate smooth vehicular movement between Noida and Delhi, has seen several rounds of repair and resurfacing over the years. However, this is the first time that all 36 expansion joints are being replaced. Govind Kumar, a resident of Kalindi Kunj, said that he frequently travels from Delhi to Noida via Kalindi Kunj. "Potholes are like hidden traps on the road, as people don't see them until it's too late. For two-wheeler riders, even a small jerk can throw them off balance and cause a serious accident. The officials must fix these potholes as soon as possible," he said. Rough patches have also been developed on the Sector 60 road that descends from the Noida Elevated Road. Many people traveling from Noida Sector 18 to 62 and Greater Noida West take this stretch daily. Noida Authority said the potholes will be identified and fixed once the monsoon rainfall is over. ‘BMC didn't follow policy in tenancy transfer to woman'

Mumbai: Bombay High Court has rapped the BMC for not following procedure in its policy for transferring tenancy to a woman of a shop-cum-residence in a Worli building that was razed for redevelopment. "There was no reason for the municipal corporation to unnecessarily stick to the stand that unless an NOC (no objection certificate) of all legal heirs are produced, transfer cannot be effected. When a policy provided for a practical way out, the municipal corporation has, for reasons best known to them, adopted the usual 'we will not do it, let the court do' approach which has resulted into unnecessary litigation of this kind,'' said Justice Milind Sathaye in Wednesday's verdict. The woman appealed against the Feb 2002 civil court's order that dismissed her suit holding that the BMC proved that as per its Jan 1989 policy a tenement cannot be transferred without consent of all legal heirs and that the right to occupy is jointly owned by all the legal heirs. The woman lived with her mother in a 360-sq-ft BMC-owned premises with her tenant-mother who died in Sept 1984. The BMC insisted on an NOC from other legal heirs to transfer the tenancy to her name. Three married sisters objected that she does not have exclusive right to tenancy. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai | Gold Rates Today in Mumbai | Silver Rates Today in Mumbai Justice Sathaye said the procedure for transferring tenancy provides for accepting a security deposit and an undertaking that the appellant will vacate if other legal heirs establish their right through court and she shall be liable to vacate and the security deposit shall stand forfeited. The BMC must adopt a procedure "conducive to quick disposal of applications like transfer of tenancy which supports overall development. .. The practical aspect under the applicable policy was totally missed by the learned trial judge." Justice Sathaye quashed and set aside the lower court's order and directed the BMC to transfer the premises to the woman as per procedure. Referring to an Aug 2022 order, where she was directed to vacate and hand over the premises to the developer, the judge said she will be entitled to occupy the permanent alternate accommodation subject to undertaking that she shall not sell, transfer, alienate or create third party rights and will be bound by any suit filed by her sisters for declaration of share/right. The judge restrained the sisters from disturbing her possession without following due process of law. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
