Panchayat polls: P'garh family extends winning streak since '80s, now 2 elected unopposed
It began with Bala Datt Dhariyal, who served as gram pradhan from 1980 to 2008 in the village of 800 in Pithoragarh district's Berinag block. In 2008, his wife Ambica Dhariyal took over the post, while their daughter-in-law Janki was elected BDC member. Ambica continued till 2014, when the seat was reserved for Scheduled Castes.
The family regained the post in 2019, when Nisha Dhariyal, also Bala Datt's daughter-in-law, was elected gram pradhan.
This year, with no other nominations, she was elected unopposed, becoming pradhan once again.
Villagers credit the family's enduring influence to their consistent work. "The Dhariyal family continuously works for the village, so people trust them," said resident Pradeep Mahara. "After 2003, the village got road connectivity and a high school. This family solved all our problems," he added.
Elsewhere in the district, Tulsi Bathwal from Kotudi village in Munsyari block has also been elected unopposed as gram pradhan for the second time.

Tulsi gained support after leading a successful campaign to ban liquor sales in the village, said resident Sunder Bathwal. "She worked with ASHA workers, anganwadi staff, gram prahari, and mid-day meal workers to make it happen," he said. Tulsi also imposed fines on those consuming or distributing liquor, collecting up to Rs 10,000 from violators, he added.
Voting for the three-tier panchayat elections in the state will take place in two phases, on July 24 and 28, across 12 districts, excluding Haridwar. Nominations closed on July 5, scrutiny will be conducted from July 7 to 9, and withdrawals can be made between July 10 and 11. Counting is scheduled for July 31.

TN to launch door delivery of ration items to elderly, differently abled
Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin will launch a scheme on Tuesday to deliver ration items to the doors of over 21 lakh beneficiaries—senior citizens and the differently abled—the Tamil Nadu government said. The "Chief Minister's Thayumanavar Scheme" will be launched by Stalin here, wherein ration items including rice and sugar will be delivered to the intended beneficiaries at their doorsteps, an official release said. Senior citizens of over 70 years and differently abled ration card holders are the targeted beneficiaries of the scheme. Around 20.42 lakh senior citizens and over 1.27 lakh differently abled persons would benefit from the scheme, it said. As part of the initiative, the ration items will be door-delivered to the beneficiaries every second Saturday and Sunday and the relevant details have already been received from the Food and Consumer Protection department and shared with the field staff concerned, it said. The staff will deliver the items to eligible beneficiaries. They would be provided with an electronic weighing machine and e-PoS (point of sale) machine as part of the initiative, it said. "The pro-people move would cost the government a sum of Rs 30.16 crore and the government aims to ensure the welfare of the marginalised sections of the society," the release added.

CM Stalin inaugurates statues, memorial halls in Pollachi
COIMBATORE: Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the statues of former chief minister K Kamaraj, former minister C Subramaniam, former MLAs VK Palaniswami and Pollachi N Mahalingam in remembrance of their contribution in implementing the Parambikulam Aliyar irrigation project (PAP), at Pollachi in Coimbatore on Monday. CM Stalin also inaugurated two halls in memory of VK Palaniswami and Pollachi N Mahalingam, and a memorial hall at a cost of Rs 2.83 crore in the Aliyar dam park for those who lost their lives in the accident that occurred during the construction of PAP. He named the office complex of the Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department in Pollachi as 'C Subramaniam Complex' and inaugurated the statues at the premises during the event. In the 2021-22 assembly session, Stalin had announced the construction of the memorial hall and bust of VK Palaniswami Gounder, who was key behind the development of PAP. Two new two-storey halls were constructed to host programmes such as training and seminars for agricultural luminaries. Following completion of work, Stalin inaugurated the two-storey 'VK Palaniswami Hall' and 'Pollachi N Mahalingam Hall', built at a cumulative cost of Rs 4.29 crore. Later, he visited the photo exhibition set up at VK Palaniswami Hall to educate the younger generation and the general public about the importance of water management and PAP.

MP Tejasvi slams delays, ballooning costs of Bengaluru Metro's Pink Line
BENGALURU: A day after the launch of Namma Metro's Yellow Line, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya hit out at the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) over the delay and escalating costs of the Pink Line. Speaking to TNIE onboard a train on the Yellow Line on Monday, Surya said the elevated stretch from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere, earlier set for opening in September 2025, will now be ready only by March 2026. The underground section from Dairy Circle to Nagavara, originally targeted for opening on June 2026, is now slated for September 2026. Surya expressed frustration over BMRCL's repeated delays and ballooning costs, citing examples from previous phases. Phase 1's budget rose from Rs 6,300 crore in 2005 to Rs 14,000 crore, and Phase 2's from Rs 26,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 40,000 crore in 2024, he said, calling it an undue burden on taxpayers despite high demand for Metro connectivity. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on Sunday confirmed the new timelines and revealed that the proposed Phase 3A corridor (Red line) — 36.58 km from Sarjapur to Hebbal, costing Rs 28,405 crore — has had its Detailed Project Report (DPR) returned to the state for cost review under benchmarking guidelines. The ministry urged the state to expedite the process and prepare a long-term Metro master plan for Bengaluru. Surya also flagged the need to increase Metro train frequency, especially on the Yellow Line, with more train sets expected by year-end. He said, 'I spoke to the MD of Titagarh Rail Systems (the company which is manufacturing and supplying train sets) and he says that from October two trains will be available per month and by the end of August, the fourth train will also be added.'
