Saturday Lotto: WA's heritage game receiving $1 million prize pool boost in 45-year celebration

West Australian19-05-2025
To celebrate the 45-year run of Saturday Lotto, players have the chance to strike gold with an extra $1 million in prize money for the weekend draw.
The division one prize pool will increase from an estimated $5 million to an estimated $6 million, beginning with the first draw this Saturday, May 24.
Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said the introduction of Saturday Lotto was an exciting time for the State back in 1979.
'Prior to 1979, Lotto games ran like raffles, so when Saturday Lotto came along, it was incredibly exciting for WA players,' he said.
'The first Saturday Lotto draw offered West Aussie's the chance to win a $35,000 division one prize.
'At this time Perth's median house price was around $25,000, so $35,000 was a life-changing offering for WA players.'
What they didn't anticipate at the time was just how popular Saturday Lotto would become in Western Australia, with three times the predicted 45,000 tickets sold for the first draw and retailers were selling out of tickets just hours after opening their doors.
The big initial draw for Saturdays, which was State-based at the time, saw two tickets from WA match the winning six numbers, splitting the division one $35,000 prize between a pair of lucky punters.
Margaret Hambley, owner of EE Hambley in Queens Park, said the store that's been in her family for 78 years has sold Lotto tickets longer then she has worked there.
'I'll always remember (in 1979) spending Fridays filling the old Hugan terminals with tickets and delivering it to Lotterywest HQ each week,' she said.
'There were plenty of Saturday Lotto Tickets in there each time and it is still much loved among players today.
'Saturday Lotto is the go-to game for most of my regular players, they always favour it over other games.
'Saturday Lotto creates the most division one winners in WA each year and has been around so long that it has a special place in people's heart.'
Since its inception, Saturday Lotto has delivered the most division one wins in WA every year, as well as helping raise nearly $1 billion over the past decade through its grants program for the WA community.

Eagles bullish AFL's $2 million man will stay

West Coast coach Andrew McQualter is optimistic Harley Reid will stay at the club for the long term despite more Godfather-type offers rolling in for the star midfielder. Reid is contracted to West Coast until the end of 2026 but there is already a huge tug-of-war for the No.1 draft pick. St Kilda were the latest club to throw their hat into the ring, with the Saints reportedly contemplating an offer in the vicinity of $25 million over 12 years. The Eagles offer is rumoured to be about $24 million over 11 years - composing of an initial two-year deal with a trigger for the remaining nine. Hawthorn, Essendon and Geelong are others to have shown interest in Reid, with Melbourne-based clubs hoping the pull-home factor will convince the Victorian to leave West Coast. Reid's management say the 20-year-old is happy in Perth, and the Eagles are hopeful of being able to re-sign the midfield bull. "I'm really confident Harley will be here," McQualter said on Thursday. "Every day Harley turns up to work, he's incredibly invested in this team, this club. So yeah, I'm really optimistic that Harley will be here." When asked to clarify whether his optimism around Reid was merely for next year or for the long term, McQualter replied: "I'm talking for a long time." "The young man is really invested," McQualter added. "He's working hard to make us become better, to get himself better. "He cares about the group, cares about the club. So there's signs that point to me that he's really invested." Questions have been raised about whether it's in the best interests of a club to commit more than $2 million a season on one player. McQualter doesn't see any issues with it. "Money's different to what it used to be," the former Saints and Suns tagger said. "When I played, I got paid $48,000. So if you're asking me would I have taken $2 million - the answer is yes, I would have. "Was I worth it? No, I think that's pretty obvious. "But I think that's just where the game's trending. It's going up. It'll happen eventually - someone will be that player. "There was a time when no one was a million dollar player, and that broke a record. So that'll just be what happens, and it will keep moving like that in the future." McQualter was less bullish when it came to co-captain Oscar Allen, who as a restricted free agent is expected to sign with the Brisbane Lions. "We're working with Oscar's management. We're still not clear where it'll be, but we're working really hard to try and make Oscar a player here for a long time," McQualter said. The Eagles showed enormous fight in last week's nine-point loss to Adelaide, and they'll face another big task on Sunday against a star-studded Western Bulldogs attack featuring Sam Darcy and Aaron Naughton at Marvel Stadium.

Ferry terminal a bridge too far for Applecross residents

Applecross residents want a terminal proposed as part of an expansion of ferry services moved across the river to Como. The State Government is planning to build a ferry terminal immediately north of the Raffles Hotel and near the luxurious Raffles Waterfront Apartments as part of its $107 million expansion of public transport options along the Swan River. A new river route will connect it and a new terminal at Matilda Bay with the existing Elizabeth Quay ferry stop. The new terminals will feature a fixed jetty connecting the shore and sheltered waiting area, and a covered hinged jetty guiding passengers to the floating pontoon where they will board the ferries. The Matilda Bay location sparked backlash from other water users and Matilda Bay-based groups when it was confirmed last month, and now the Applecross location has also come under fire. The Canning Bridge Ferry Action Group wants the Applecross terminal shifted across the river to the Canning Cloister Foreshore in Como. It also wants 'real consultation' by being part of the Applecross Landing Community Reference Group. Canning Bridge Ferry Action Group spokesman Matthew Cox said their concerns were not a case of NIMBYism. Residents were worried for the safety of dolphins which they said regularly played in the area and the swans who use the area to raise their cygnets. 'The government's proposal is flawed and there is a good case for mitigating the impacts to improve the ferry service expansion,' Mr Cox said. 'We believe that positive changes to the ferry jetty and infrastructure location, orientation and design could bring benefits to all parties. 'There are better ways to make the ferry project a success.' The group said in a submission to the State Government and City of Melville that 24-hour lighting and associated activity at the terminal would disrupt residents. 'Vehicles and buses servicing ferries every 25 minutes from 6.30am to 12.30am daily will increase traffic on Kintail and Canning Beach roads, exacerbating congestion and parking issues,' it said. 'The proposed multi-storey car park on the Tivoli site opposite the Raffles Waterfront will negatively affect the character and amenity of the area, exacerbate traffic congestion and make it difficult for vehicles to access local residences.' It said using the Canning Cloister Foreshore would cost less, have less impact on the environment and be closer to a larger residential population. 'This is a pivotal moment to get the balance right — for community, environment, and long-term sustainability,' Mr Cox said. According to Metronet, the Applecross terminal will be designed to support current and future high-density living and tourism and connect to other suburbs via existing bus routes. 'It will provide an attractive and scenic alternative for those wanting to travel across the Swan River, with current routes via the Narrows and the Causeway bridges heavily congested during peak times,' a fact sheet said. City of Melville CEO Gail Bowman said the council had not formed a position on the proposed ferry terminal. 'The city is aware of some community concerns with the proposal and encourages residents to give feedback to the Department of Planning Lands and Heritage through its online platform when the comment period opens,' she said. A statement from Transport Minister Rita Saffioti last month confirming the two new terminal locations said stakeholder engagement had been ongoing since October last year and would continue to be an important part of the project. Credit: PTA The State Government planned to establish a reference group, with key water user groups within the Matilda Bay and Applecross areas to be invited to participate and provide advice on controls and measures so the waterway could be shared safely by all users. A development application for the two new terminals was expected to be submitted soon and the Department of Planning Lands and Heritage would seek public comment. Premier Roger Cook said a re-think was needed on how the Swan River was used when he announced the ferry expansion in February last year. 'Just imagine enjoying a pint at the Raffles in Applecross, then cruising to Optus Stadium to watch the footy. Or living on the Canning Bridge precinct and hopping on a ferry to go to work in the city. Or perhaps future residents of the Belmont Racecourse development catch a ferry over to UWA to study,' he said.

Lotto winners in Perth north find humble way to celebrate

What would you do with a Lotto win? Pay off the mortgage? Buy a new car? Perhaps a holiday of a lifetime (first class, of course). What about a seafood omelette and extra spring rolls? A couple from Perth's northern suburbs found a humble way to celebrate their $1.4 million Lotto windfall, heading straight to the local Chinese takeaway for a few indulgences. The Banksia Grove paid won the Division One prize in a Saturday Lotto draw after buying themselves a SlikPik 18 ticket. But they didn't immediately learn of their win. The penny dropped when they spotted a post on a community social media page about a winning ticket sold at Banksia Grove News and they quickly confirmed they had the winning numbers. After collecting their winnings, the couple admitted they were 'not flashy people' and wanted a simple celebration. 'I think we'll treat ourselves to a seafood omelette at our local Chinese tonight,' the couple said after collecting their cash. 'And maybe some extra spring rolls. We're not flashy people. It's all about enjoying the little things in life.' But they also plan to splash out a little, taking some time off work to travel Australia in their caravan. 'Money shouldn't change you, but this will absolutely take the pressure off,' the winner said. 'We'd love to fly to Melbourne for the AFL Grand Final. We've never been before and now we can go.' In Perth's south, a Lotto winner has yet to claim their prize from the draw on August 2. The winning ticket was sold at The Lucky Charm Rockingham. The numbers were 24, 40, 43, 21, 45, 1 and the supplementary numbers were 16 and 9.
