Wet start to monsoon helps Kol top last June rain count
2
Kolkata: Two more days are still left of June but the monsoon rainfall count in Kolkata has already exceeded the figure logged in last year's June. A wet beginning to the monsoon led to 187.8 mm rainfall in the city between June 1 and 27 this year, while the figure was 143.2 mm in the entire June last year.
With a cyclonic circulation and a low-pressure area set to form on June 29, the count, which remained below normal in Kolkata, could exceed the normal mark, said the Met office.
Consistent overnight rain and a grey sky greeted Kolkatans on Friday morning, and as the day proceeded, a cloud cover persisted with occasional spells of drizzle in most areas. The city received 42.7 mm of rain on Friday, as a result of which the maximum temperature dropped two degrees to 29.3°C.

Heavy to very heavy rain has been predicted for Monday, as a cyclonic circulation is forecast to form over the north Bay of Bengal on June 29 that may develop into a low-pressure area by June 30 (Monday). "We expect spells of heavy rain in Kolkata and south Bengal that could take the rain count higher and closer to the normal mark. The city has a 24% deficit for June till now," said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay.

But south Bengal has already received more than its normal share of June rain. It received 243.9 mm of rain between June 1 and 27, 13% more than the normal count. "There have been successive cyclonic circulations that caused intermittent but consistent rain ever since monsoon arrived in south Bengal and Kolkata on June 17. While the rain has been heavier around Kolkata, the city has received drizzles and moderate showers.
But Kolkata's deficit is not much, a deficit of up to 19% being taken as normal. The impending low-pressure may wipe out the month's deficit," said Bandopadhyay.
Heavy rainfall (7 cm -11 cm) has been predicted on June 30 in Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Purulia, East and West Burdwan.
In 2024, the monsoon arrived even later in Kolkata and started on a dry note. It had led to a deficit of 49% in Kolkata in June and 67% in south Bengal. Between 2014 and 2020, Kolkata received more than its normal rain count in June just once, in 2018.

Hurricane Erin intensifies into category five storm: Know pathways, meaning and more
Image credits: X Hurricane Erin has rapidly intensified into a rare category five hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 160mph (260km/h) and is expected to gain even more strength. Mike Brennan, National Hurricane Center Director, said in a briefing that the "extremely powerful" storm had "explosively deepened and intensified" overnight after growing from a tropical storm on Friday. Hurricane Erin: Pathways Image credits: X The hurricane is in the Caribbean, and expected to pass north of the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands this weekend, bringing up to 15 cm of rain with potential for flash floods and mudslides. It is currently not forecast to make landfall on the mainland US. The NHC said earlier on Saturday that the hurricane's swells will spread to the Bahamas, Bermuda and the East coast of the United States, including Florida and Atlantic Canada early next week. The hurricane is expected to bring dangerous conditions to offshore waters and beaches along the Florida coast from August 18-21, including rip currents and rough, high surf with breakers greater than 7 feet on the 19th and 20th, according to the weather service office in Jacksonville, Florida. Turbidity warning at city water supply origin after DVC release
Kolkata: The turbidity level in Hooghly river has risen to the danger mark, putting the Palta water treatment plant on high alert due to the release of storm water from DVC-run barrages in high volume. This century-old plant supplies potable water to the entire north and central Kolkata, with large parts of south Kolkata also being dependent on it. Mounds of sludge present in the Hooghly have also affected Garden Reach and Dhapa water treatment plants. While Garden Reach supplies potable water to large parts of south Kolkata, including areas such as Garden Reach, Behala, parts of Tollygunge and Jadavpur, the Dhapa plant caters to the residents along EM Bypass. According to a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) water supply department official, the Palta plant was currently under threat from a high amount of turbidity in the Hooghly, which, if it persists, could lead to a supply of less water to the city than its daily requirement. Fearing a health hazard, the KMC water supply department is implementing corrective measures to ensure that the drinking water supplied to residents remains fit for consumption. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A KMC official stated that the civic body was monitoring the release of water from DVC. "If it rains heavily and the DVC continues to release high volume of water, the water treatment plant might get affected," the official added. "If the level crosses the 500 mark, it will be a challenge for us to keep the production of water normal," a KMC water supply department official said. NTU measures the turbidity of a fluid or the presence of suspended particles in water. In July-end, however, the turbidity level stood at 800 for at least two days after DVC released more water amid incessant rain, an official said. Subsequently, less water was drawn from Hooghly into at Palta. But, officials claimed, the supply of potable water to the city remained unaffected. Palta plant engineers are concerned about potential damage to machines used in the sedimentation tank zone. A KMC engineer noted that if any machine, involved in the filtration process, in that area fail, it would be difficult for the civic body to supply safe drinking water to vast parts of the city. However, the slow sand filtration bed at Palta water treatment plant has been instrumental in maintaining operations during this crisis. " This bed is helping in absorbing the high volume of sludge," the civic official said, adding that an adequate volume of alum is also being used to make the water safe.
