Kota Kinabalu: Three Sabahans — former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, history researcher Stephan Bin Gaimin and activist Asraf Bin Amir — have filed a lawsuit against DAP and its mouthpiece, Roketkini.com, for publishing a misleading image falsely linking the Sulu incursion to Lahad Datu. The core of the case revolves around a fake image published on Roketkini.com, a website created by DAP to further its political agenda. The image, incorrectly labelled as depicting the 2013 Sulu incursion in Sabah, was later included in the book Kedaulatan Negara Harga Mati Pencerobohan Sulu dan Dampaknya kepada Keselamatan Pantai Timur Sabah, published by Penerbit Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). The plaintiffs contended that the image actually depicts a separate, unrelated violent conflict in the Philippines. That image of a massing of armed men led by a commander, all of whom were dressed in army fatigue and carried weapons, erroneously depicted the wrong and scarier message than was the case of the Sulu incursion at Tanduo in 2013. That wrong image has the effect of scaring the people of Sabah. Earlier this year, the plaintiffs had written to MCMC and also lodged a complaint via the Commission's SOP (online portal), but to date, there has been no response of any kind from MCMC. Therefore, this legal action is also to seek a court order to compel MCMC to order DAP and Roketkini.com to take down that offending image. 'This misleading image has caused great concern and confusion, especially for the people of Sabah. The publication in Roketkini.com has also caused other organisations like UMS to use that wrong image and aggravated the panic and public sensitivities. The publication of false news about a sensitive issue like the 2013 Sulu incursion not only undermines the integrity of news sources but also stirs unnecessary fear and panic among the public,' said Stephan Bin Gaimin, a historian and researcher. In a statement, plaintiffs Asraf Bin Amir, a native of Tungku, Lahad Datu, and Stephan Gaimin emphasised that their legal action is not just about correcting the facts but ensuring the integrity of public information, especially considering that the misinformation was published on the website of the ruling party in Malaysia and the party of a member of the Sabah Cabinet. 'The use of this particular photo has given the wrong impression of a major armed force led by trained commanders invading Lahad Datu, which has made the people of Sabah rightfully concerned and worried,' added Asraf. In response, the plaintiffs are seeking an injunction to compel Roketkini.com to remove the misleading content and prevent further harm and to publish an apology on its own website. The plaintiffs are also seeking reliefs against DAP to compel Roketkini.com to remove the misleading content. This case also challenges whether the publication had violated the Printing Presses And Publications Act 1984 and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. 'This case highlights the urgent need for accountability in the digital age, where misinformation can spread like wildfire and have devastating consequences,' added Yong. 'We will not stand by idly as false narratives are used to mislead and manipulate the public. We are determined to hold those responsible accountable.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MP questions ‘secret' gazetting of new KL planning rules

Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said the new planning rules weakened transparency and limited public objections to development projects. PETALING JAYA : DAP's Teresa Kok has criticised the government for 'secretly' gazetting new planning regulations for Kuala Lumpur, which sidelined public consultation and handed excessive power to the city mayor. Kok said civil society organisations only recently became aware of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Planning Rules 2025, which were gazetted on June 13 and took effect three days later. 'I want to ask the government why these new planning rules were gazetted without any public consultation or engagement with stakeholders, especially in the spirit of participatory governance?' She spoke on the issue while debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat this evening. Kok said Rule 3 of the new guidelines only required the mayor to consult others if it is deemed necessary, leaving no guarantee of public input. She said the rules, which replace decades-old planning laws, weakened transparency and limited public objections to development projects. She urged the government to review the rules and explain how they were formulated. On education, Kok said the 13MP's focus on TVET was not enough to fix parents' declining confidence in public schools. 'For urban communities, more and more parents are choosing to send their children to private primary and secondary schools, or even resort to homeschooling. 'This is due to a growing lack of confidence in the national education system,' she said, adding that a nationwide survey must be carried out to understand this trend. Kok, who once served as primary industries minister, also spoke on the RM1.4 billion allocation over five years for replanting of oil palm. She said this was insufficient, covering only 0.5% of the country's plantations annually. At RM20,000 per hectare, the allocation allows just 14,000 hectares to be replanted annually, or 28,000ha with a 50% subsidy. 'This allocation fails to meet the minimum 4% annual replanting target,' she said. As such, Kok urged the government to tap windfall tax revenue from the oil palm industry to help smallholders, who work on a quarter of Malaysia's planted area.

Preserve national unity and peace for independence, urges Ewon

PENAMPANG: Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick has called on Malaysians, particularly in Sabah, to uphold the true meaning of independence by preserving unity, well-being, and peace. He emphasised that harmony and stability are crucial for sustainable national development and sovereignty. 'This all starts with cooperation, unity, and harmony because if the people are at odds with one another, unable to cooperate or be in harmony, how can national sovereignty be defended?' Ewon said after launching the Sabah Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy. The event, organised by the Sabah Information Department, involves 20 vehicles and 60 participants covering 2,500 kilometres across 75 locations in 20 days. The convoy began in Penampang and will conclude in Tuaran on Aug 23. Ewon encouraged Sabahans to join the 'One House, One Jalur Gemilang' initiative by displaying the national flag at their homes. He also highlighted the relevance of this year's National Day theme, 'Malaysia MADANI, Rakyat Disantuni,' aligning it with the 13th Malaysia Plan's goals of uplifting the people's dignity. 'I hope this theme reaches the grassroots. I am confident that the people understand what the government is doing, which is not only to care for them but also to champion and uplift their dignity,' he said. - Bernama

140 contingents to enliven National Day parade in Sabah

Tun Musa (centre), Masidi (fourth left) and others during the courtesy call. – Information Department photo KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): An estimated 140 parade contingents are set to enliven the 2025 Sabah National Day celebrations. State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun stated that the contingents comprise government agencies, schools, voluntary organizations and uniformed units. 'What makes this year special is that, for the first time, the celebrations will be attended by Head of State Tun Musa Aman, adding greater significance to the event. 'Tun Musa is expected to arrive at 7:30am, so we anticipate official events will take place between 7:30am and 10:30am. 'We also expect public attendance to mirror last year's, where strategic spots along the parade route will be filled early. 'Therefore, I urge all Sabahans to come together in celebrating and attending the event on August 31 at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, to demonstrate our love for our nation and for Sabah,' he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Masidi, who is also the chairman of the 2025 Sabah National Day Main Committee, said this year's theme, 'Malaysia Madani: People Embraced' (Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni), resonates deeply, especially with leaders. 'This theme is profoundly relevant, particularly as a call to leaders and those entrusted with positions of authority to always be on the ground, engaging with and caring for the people. 'Thus, this theme urges leaders to be present among the people, show compassion, and visibly demonstrate their presence as the pillars upon whom the people rely to realize their aspirations,' he added. He also advised the public to continue flying the Jalur Gemilang and the Sabah state flag as symbols of love for Malaysia and the state of Sabah. Also present were Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tan Lee Fatt and Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.
