140 contingents to enliven National Day parade in Sabah
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): An estimated 140 parade contingents are set to enliven the 2025 Sabah National Day celebrations.
State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun stated that the contingents comprise government agencies, schools, voluntary organizations and uniformed units.
'What makes this year special is that, for the first time, the celebrations will be attended by Head of State Tun Musa Aman, adding greater significance to the event.
'Tun Musa is expected to arrive at 7:30am, so we anticipate official events will take place between 7:30am and 10:30am.
'We also expect public attendance to mirror last year's, where strategic spots along the parade route will be filled early.
'Therefore, I urge all Sabahans to come together in celebrating and attending the event on August 31 at Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens, to demonstrate our love for our nation and for Sabah,' he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Masidi, who is also the chairman of the 2025 Sabah National Day Main Committee, said this year's theme, 'Malaysia Madani: People Embraced' (Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni), resonates deeply, especially with leaders.
'This theme is profoundly relevant, particularly as a call to leaders and those entrusted with positions of authority to always be on the ground, engaging with and caring for the people.
'Thus, this theme urges leaders to be present among the people, show compassion, and visibly demonstrate their presence as the pillars upon whom the people rely to realize their aspirations,' he added.
He also advised the public to continue flying the Jalur Gemilang and the Sabah state flag as symbols of love for Malaysia and the state of Sabah.
Also present were Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Tan Lee Fatt and Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a deeper appreciation of Asian history that moves beyond colonial narratives, citing Tipu Sultan of Mysore, an Indian ruler who fought against the British East India Company as a model of courage, learning, and tolerance. He said that the contributions of Tipu Sultan and his father Haider Ali, as defenders against British colonial expansion, exemplified the importance of understanding history from the perspective of local and regional leaders rather than solely from Western accounts. 'History is not necessarily very kind, one of our scholars Syed Hussein Alatas emphasised the need to reconstruct history because history cannot be written only by the winners or from the perspective of the colonial rulers,' he said during the launch of the More Than A Day As A Tiger exhibition at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, here tonight. Also present were the Prime Minister's wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Albukhary Foundation Chairman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary; Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai and his spouse, as well as representatives from embassies and consulates. The Prime Minister noted that Malaysian history, like that of many others, is often written from the perspective of the British, essentially reflecting Western colonial rule. 'Of course, there have been lots of academic accounts, including by Edward Said on Orientalism, but the manner, the whole discipline of history, culture and society is being dictated by certain Western viewpoints,' he said. Anwar also shared his personal experience visiting Mysore before taking office, recalling his admiration for Tipu Sultan's modest palace and his protection of Hindu temples, including the ancient temple in Mysore. He also praised Tipu Sultan's foresight in mastering military technology to confront colonial powers, citing the Mysore Sultanate's renowned cannons and firearms that had shocked the British in the early wars. 'It is not just an ordinary exhibition, but to showcase the history of India and the Muslim world, and the history of the anti-colonial struggle against colonial rule, in this particular case, the British rule. 'His diplomatic skills with the few sultanates, Muslims and Hindus in India and his venture into international diplomacy, particularly in persuading the French forces to support his struggle against the British,' he said. Anwar noted that while Malaysians have historically had limited knowledge of Tipu Sultan and Haider Ali's legacy, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia's exhibition would significantly enhance understanding about the two historical figures. Featuring an extensive collection of artefacts, manuscripts, weaponry and artworks related to Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, the exhibition will run from tomorrow until January 11, 2026, at Special Gallery 2. — Bernama

In Dewan Rakyat today: Cost of living, MLFF tolls and US tariffs take centre stage
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Government efforts to ease the cost of living, the implementation of the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system, and the issue of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States on Malaysia are among the key matters scheduled for discussion in the Dewan Rakyat sitting today. According to the Order Paper published on the Parliament's website, during the question-and-answer session, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (PN-Bukit Gantang) will ask the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to state the measures taken by the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) to help reduce the cost of living. Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (PN-Setiu) will pose a question to the Works Minister on the status of MLFF toll collection implementation, besides seeking clarification on improvements to systems such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to ensure the new system's effectiveness. Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai) will raise a question to the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry regarding the status and effectiveness of negotiations between Malaysia and the United States on the implementation of reciprocal tariffs. He also asked for government assurances that the move would not adversely affect trade, supply chains or the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector in Malaysia. Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong) will question the Minister of Youth and Sports on key improvements introduced by the ministry in the National Youth Consultative Council and the significant proposals made by youths, as well as the ministry's efforts in conveying these proposals to the government. Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan (PN-Merbok), meanwhile, will ask the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether the ministry had allocated special provisions to state governments or related agencies to manage solid waste and clean up illegal dumping sites outside the jurisdiction of local authorities. Following the question session, the Dewan Rakyat will resume the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday.
