Abu Dhabi University Kicks-off the First International Sustainability Leaders Meeting
The ISLM brought together national and global sustainability leaders, experts, and higher education institutions, as well as representatives from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), over ten international universities, industries, and global ranking organizations.
During the inaugural ISLM, under the theme 'Doing Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education: The Story of Our Institution and Society,' Professor Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of ADU, alongside H.E. Husin Bagis, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the UAE and Prof. Riri Fitri Sari, Chairperson, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, welcomed all attendees consisting of prominent global sustainability leaders, experts and higher education institutions. Participants engaged in in-depth strategic discussions on integrating the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the academic institutions to drive global sustainability efforts.

Professor Riri Fitri Sari, Chairperson, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, emphasized the significance of this meeting by stating: 'This collaboration is crucial in bringing together university leaders to share their sustainability efforts and discuss how we can advance sustainable practices not only in higher education but across communities worldwide. The UAE, and Abu Dhabi in particular, have set a remarkable example for other nations with their strong commitment to sustainability, showcasing the power of innovation and leadership in creating a greener future.'
Professor Sherine Farouk, Associate Provost for Academic Projects and Internationalization, Member of the Sustainability Strategic Committee at ADU, and Lead of the Communal Activation Pillar in the UAE Universities Climate Network (UCN), said: 'At ADU, we remain committed to equipping our students and community with the knowledge and platforms such as the inaugural International Sustainability Leaders Meeting to engage in critical conversations on sustainability. By raising awareness and providing opportunities for practical application of sustainable practices, we aim to enable our students to drive meaningful change towards a more sustainable future.'
Furthermore, the meeting featured key speakers such as H.E. Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of Environmental Information Science and Outreach Management (EISOM) at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), Dr. Ashwin Fernandes, Executive Director (AMESA) at QS and Professor Sherine Farouk, Associate Provost, Member of the Sustainability Strategic Committee at ADU and Lead of Communal Activation Pillar in the UAE Universities Climate Network (UCN).
ISLM hosted a series of high-impact keynote sessions, interactive forums and expert panel discussions addressing key sustainability topics. These sessions explored Abu Dhabi's journey as a global leader in sustainable urban development, the evolving role of universities in achieving carbon neutrality and fostering green economies and strategies for implementing the vision of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Network (UIGWURN). In addition to the critical need to establishing sustainability offices in universities in integrating sustainable practices to equipping students and faculty with the knowledge and tools to actively contribute to a greener more sustainability future.
The event is a testament to ADU's strong performance in the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, where it ranked 344th out of 1,477 institutions worldwide and 2nd in the UAE – a 15-place improvement from the previous year.
Organized by ADU, the event was launched in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST), University of Szeged, Universitas Diponegoro – The Excellence Research University (UNDIP), Università degli Studi dell'Aquila (UNIVAQ), Times Higher Education World University Rankings and Universidade de Sao Paulo, as well as the Association of Arab Universities, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, Tzu Chi University and the American University of Cairo (AUC).

UN-Habitat Jordan launches Amman's Second Voluntary Local Review
Ammon News - *Advancing Urban Resilience and Smart Sustainable Development As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting cities in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in Jordan (UN-Habitat), in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), has officially launched the development process for Amman's Second Voluntary Local Review (VLR). This launch is part of the 'Urban Economic Resilience for Inclusive Responses and Recovery from Crises' project, led by ESCWA in collaboration with UN-Habitat, further aligning Amman's urban policies with global sustainability frameworks and local development priorities. Eng. Deema Abu Thiab, Head of UN-Habitat Jordan Country Programme, emphasized: 'With only five years remaining until 2030, the urgency of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals has never been greater. Cities worldwide face accelerating environmental, economic, and social challenges, making sustainable urban planning more critical than ever. By launching its second VLR, Amman continues to lead the way as a pioneering city in the region, embracing innovation and fostering strategic partnerships to secure a more resilient and livable future for all its residents.' In 2022, Amman became the first Arab city to conduct a VLR, establishing itself as a regional leader in localizing global development agendas. The second VLR builds on this achievement by incorporating new methodologies, performance indicators, and stakeholder engagement mechanisms, ensuring a more comprehensive and actionable roadmap for sustainable urban growth. Dr. Sukaina Al-Nasrawi, Lead of the Sustainable Urban Development Portfolio at ESCWA, stated: 'By pioneering the first VLR in the Arab world, Amman set a precedent for localizing the SDGs. Today, with its second VLR, the city reaffirms its commitment to institutionalizing the process as a key mechanism for urban governance. This initiative strengthens the bridge between local and national policies, offering an inspiring model for sustainable urban management.' The second VLR will analyze Amman's resilience to economic shocks, explore smart governance strategies, and promote inclusive urban development. Abu Dhabi University Empowers Future Leaders Through National Public Speaking Competitions
Abu Dhabi University (ADU) hosted two significant speaking competitions, the 'Sixth Inter-School Public Speaking Competition' and the 'First National Undergraduate Public Speaking and Debate Competition.' Both events were designed to advance students' speaking and leadership skills, aligning with the UAE Year of Community. In collaboration with Liwa International School – Falaj Hazza, the 'Sixth Inter-School Public Speaking Competition,' was held at ADU's Al Ain campus and welcomed over 400 students from 56 middle and high schools across the UAE. The competition provided students with essential skills to prepare them for future academic and professional success, such as communication, critical thinking, and leadership. In addition to promoting intellectual engagement and exchange among students from diverse backgrounds, the event featured several enriching workshops and activities led by esteemed faculty members. These included the 'Body Language' workshop by Dr. Nadim Khoury, Chair of the Communication Department at ADU and an 'Introduction to Japanese Anime Art' by Dr. Rosemary Sulaiman, Assistant Professor of Mass Communication at the first-ever 'National Undergraduate Public Speaking and Debate Competition' organized by ADU's College of Education, Arts and Social Sciences welcomed university students from across the UAE and Oman. The two-day event served as a platform for students to showcase their intellectual abilities through public speaking and debating. Focusing on the theme of sustainability, the competition addressed critical challenges in the environmental, business, technological and social sectors. Students competed in three main categories: English debate, original oratory in English and Arabic and impromptu speech in English and Arabic. The competitions saw over 30 university, middle and high school students win monetary prizes, while all participants received appreciation certificates for their participation.
