An Oscar nominated director has named their suggestions for an action movie marathon by telling fans to watch three masterpieces in one night.

Celine Song received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for her debut feature Past Lives. She has since gone on to make rom-com Materialists. She previously worked on the television series The Wheel of Time as a writer.

Her new film stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. It was released earlier this year in the US and finally hits UK cinemas on August 15.

Materialists sees a young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.
However, while promoting the film, she took some time out to recommend her favourite titles in a very different genre. Thankfully for audiences at home, each film is currently streaming via Sky Cinema or Now with a movies pass.

Asked to pick out her perfect movie marathon during an interview with Empire magazine, she said: "I would say I think you should watch Children of Men, Alfonso Cuarón, and then I think you should follow it up with edge of tomorrow by Doug Liman, and then I think you should watch Mad Max Fury Road by George Miller."
Explaining her decisions she goes on to say: "What I love and respect about all three of those movies and why I think they're perfect companions to each other is because they are great action films where we get to enjoy the parts of cinema that like drives us to go to the cinemas but is also going to have very real political ideologies and beliefs in what we want the world to be and I think that's what I really love and respect about it."
She continued: "And the characters are so amazing and it's actually some of the best written things ever. The direction is insane but it's not a mindless action thing, it's always going to have something deeply ideologically interesting and very political and socially significant."

It seems that these should be fan favourite picks that were also critical hits as each scored more than 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Edge of Tomorrow managed 91%, Children of Men 92% while Fury Road earned an impressive 97%.
For those that are not familiar with these three films, Edge of Tomorrow is set in 2027, where humanity faces extinction after it fails to reproduce for 18 years. When, a woman gets pregnant, a federal agent, played by Clive Owen protects her as she holds the key to humanity's survival.
Edge of Tomorrow sees Tom Cruise's Captain Cage trapped in a time loop as he is forced to enter the battlefield after alien forces launch an attack on Earth and threaten to wipe out the human race. He must team up with Emily Blunt's warrior to save the planet.
Mad Max Fury Road sees Tom Hardy take over the role of the titular character from Mel Gibson, in an apocalyptic world, where a tyrant rules over a stark desert, controlling every drop of water. Two rebels, one escaping grief and the other reaching out to her childhood, are the last hope for a few.

Julianne Moore, 64, ditches Hollywood glamour as she posts rare makeup-free selfie

Julianne Moore was effortlessly radiant as she posted a rare makeup-free selfie to Instagram on Tuesday. The 64-year-old Oscar winner - who recently whisked herself away for an Italian getaway with her family - shared the photo with fans while reflecting on special moments from the month of August thus far. The mom-of-two flashed a cheerful smile as she sported a plunging, black bikini top while spending time outdoors. Julianne also opted to showcase her glowing skin to her 2.7 million followers while taking in a scenic sunset. Another image was taken of a wooden deck that was surrounded by trees and tall grass as water stretched out in the distance. The blue sky was covered with wispy clouds that had hues of orange and pink as the evening sun began to set. The Oscar winner jumped to her main Instagram page on Tuesday to share special moments from the month of August thus far; seen in May in NYC The May December actress indulged in a tasty meal that comprised of fresh tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese. Julianne's dog Hope also celebrated turning one year older and the Hollywood star included a slide dedicated to the adorable pup. Both she and her husband Bart Freundlich adopted the lab mix back in 2020 from Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue. Lastly, the star showed her Wordle score to her fans and simply captioned the Instagram carousel with, 'August.' Julianne has previously opened up about beauty and offered her thoughts on the phrase 'aging gracefully.' During a past interview with As If Magazine in 2021, she said, 'There's so much judgement inherent in the term "aging gracefully." Is there an ungraceful way to age? 'We don't have an option, of course. No one has an option about aging, so it's not a positive or a negative thing, it just is.' In regards to aging, the actress explained that it is 'part of the human condition, so why are we always talking about it as if it is something that we have control over?' She added that growing older should instead be focused on 'challenging ourselves' and to 'learn new things.' 'How do we continue to evolve? How do we navigate life to have even deeper experiences?' Julianne further expressed. And while talking to Glamour, the Sirens star stated that she felt 'makeup is something that you should want to wear, but you shouldn't feel like you have to. 'I think it's an antiquated idea, this idea that we put makeup on to cover something up, to cover up our flaws, or to look professional. You can be professional without makeup. Makeup should be a want, not a need.' She later reflected, 'That's the biggest change that I think we've had in the beauty industry…is that you do it for yourself, not because you feel that you have to.' During an interview with Vogue in 2023, Julianne gave insight into her skincare routine - which comprises of Cetaphil cleanser, SPF, serums and eye cream. And when it comes to the application of makeup, the mom-of-two explained that she doesn't 'like a lot of coverage; I like to be able to see the freckles in my skin and color in my skin as well.' Julianne has been keeping busy during the summer season and recently enjoyed an Italian trip with her husband Bart as well as their two children Liv, 27, and Caleb, 23. The actress and her loved ones were spotted taking a dip in the cool water in the city of Grosseto. Julianne sported a black, one-piece swimsuit while her mini-me daughter donned a shimmering gold bikini. She additionally shared a few memorable pictures to her Instagram page from the family vacation, including her two kids posing together. Another showed Liv and Caleb pausing for a snap with their dad Bart - whom Julianne tied the knot with in 2003. The actress also recently made an appearance in the Netflix limited series titled Sirens - alongside other cast members such as Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton. The premise is: 'Worried about her sister's too-close relationship with her billionaire boss, a scrappy everywoman seeks answers at a lavish seaside estate,' per an official synopsis. The show has garnered critical praise since its release on the streaming site back in May. Sirens also recently raked in Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Meghann and also Outstanding Directing. A couple months earlier in June, Julianne also hinted at a possible move to the U.K. - after other Hollywood celebrities have left the U.S. following Donald Trump's presidential win late last year in November. During an appearance on Capital Breakfast with her Echo Valley co-star Sydney Sweeney, the Still Alice actress explained how she has a British passport due to her mother being from Scotland. When asked if she could 'see herself' residing in the U.K. full-time, Julianne replied, 'I can actually, my husband and I have talked about that sometimes. It could be kind of fun. 'I've worked here a lot and I'm really comfortable here. I've been working here, gosh, probably since the nineties...' Other stars that have moved out of the United States since Trump's second term began in the White House include Rosie O'Donnell, Eva Longoria and Ellen DeGeneres.

Despite a three-year wait, season two has unsurprisingly soared up the charts on the streaming platform. In fact, Variety reports that the first batch of the season has earned more than 50million views so far. According to the outlet, this matches the numbers that season one premiered with in 2022 – but for only half the number of episodes, meaning the figures could get even higher when the rest, which include Lady Gaga, hit our screens. Critics and fans alike have heaped praise on Jenna and her star-studded castmates, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Fred Armisen, Luis Guzman, Billie Piper and Gaga. It currently commands a Rotten Tomatoes score of 83%, and has been branded 'spookier than ever'. Variety's Aramide Tinubu praising: 'Full of zing and depth, the season remains just as thrilling as the first.' Lorraine Ali of the LA Times, agreed: 'It's really the performances, casting and artistic flourishes that make Wednesday a ghoulish delight.' Mashable's Belen Edwards penned: 'Ortega remains the cold, dead heart of the series – and I mean that as a compliment in tribute to Wednesday! 'With one deadly glare and a dry putdown in voiceover, Ortega's Wednesday is still a force to be reckoned with.' More Trending As Vicky Jessop of the Evening Standard, added: 'Tim Burton's latest work is still deliciously twisted, and goes down like a spoonful of poisoned sugar. 'Something this addictive certainly isn't good for us, but we'll keep coming back for more.' View More » Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix now. Got a story? Game of Thrones star's ‘underrated' period drama now streaming on Amazon Prime

The BBC drama Gunpowder has just arrived on Amazon Prime Video, to give viewers something to fill in their historical gaps on the Gunpowder Plot. Starring Game of Thrones breakout Kit Harington, the gory drama from Ronan Bennett first aired in 2017 to a fairly positive reception – the show has a rating of 72% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Harington plays Robert Catesby, the mastermind behind the plot to blow up the House of Lords in 1605 and, it turns out, who Harington is a direct descendent of on his mother's side of the family. The show unspools this infamous plot to kill the king (James I, played by Derek Riddell), which went epicly wrong. The show is set in the context of Catholicism being illegal across the country, with very historically-accurate brutality inflicted on the population over comparatively minor religious differences. The three-part series was primetime viewing on the BBC – even as many noted the episodes were crammed with gruesome and graphic scenes that reflected the violence of the time period. Think intestines pouring out from people like sausage-links. The opening episode alone features scenes of a priest being hung, drawn and quartered and a woman stripped naked before being crushed to death under a slab which has weights slowly added one at a time. So not one for the queasy viewers. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video In interviews to promote the show, Harington was sure that viewers would be able to handle 'a greater level of violence as long as it's justified'. He said: 'We can't avoid the executions that the people around these men suffered. And I think it's wrong when showing a torture scene or execution, I think it's wrong to shy too far away from the reality of it. 'You need to feel the reasons, to know why they go and do the things they do.' It's by no means a cheery watch. And while that might have put some off at the time, there are also those who congratulated the show on its authenticity. In 1605, a group of British Catholics, including Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby (Harington's character), hatched a plan to blow up Parliament. The plan was to wipe out the anti-Catholic establishment and King James I, a protestant who introduced strict laws that persecuted Catholics. These laws included the outlaw of Catholic priests. Spoiler alert, the plot failed. Guards found the conspirators hiding in the cellars, moments before they had planned to blow the place. Brits now celebrate Bonfire Night on the November 5 anniversairy, with a Guy Fawkes effigy traditionally burned on a bonfire alongside fireworks. Taking to Google reviews, Beverley Raw wrote: 'I found this fantastically exciting swashbuckling stuff. 'If you like exciting, adult historical realistic drama this is for you. Brilliant casting and acting.' 'Amazing show, so underrated and has a great script, cinematography, and acting. Well done indeed,' wrote Jacob Bennette. More Trending Carla Wilson echoed: 'Excellent cast, brought to us as realistically as possible. 'Violent scenes, and to those that complained of the violence and how sick it was, one only has to read history to know just how sick people were during that time. 'Love historical movies or series and hope to see more.' View More » Gunpowder is avaibale to stream on Amazon Prime Video. Got a story?
