Humanity trumps terror: Kashmiri guide saves lives of children of Chhattisgarh tourists

Deccan Herald25-04-2025

Raipur: Risking his own life, a Kashmiri tourist guide saved the lives of children from a group of tourists from Chhattisgarh when terrorists struck in Pahalgam on Tuesday..Nazakat Ahmad Shah (28) was acting as a guide to a group of 11, four couples and three children, from Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district in Chhattisgarh during their Kashmir trip..Shah's cousin was killed in the attack that claimed the lives of 26 persons, he told PTI over the phone on Thursday..Arvind Agrawal, one of the tourists, posted pictures of him and his daughter with Shah on his social media handle and wrote, "You saved our lives by risking your own. We will never be able to repay the debt of Nazakat Bhai." As per his Facebook profile, Agrawal is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha- a youth wing of the BJP..Besides the Agrawals, the families of Kuldeep Sthapak, Shivansh Jain and Happy Wadhavan were part of the group..Shah sold shawls in Chirmiri town of Chhattisgarh in the winter and knew these families.."They reached Jammu on April 17, and I received them and took them to Kashmir in two vehicles. I took them to Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg, and in the last leg, we decided to visit Pahalgam," he said.."Pahalgam was to be the last venue as my village is close by, and I wanted to host them because Kashmiris have a passion for hospitality," Shah said.."We reached Baisran around noon. My tourists were busy with pony rides and clicking pictures. Around 2 pm, I told Lucky (Kuldeep) that we were getting late, so we should go. He replied we would go after clicking some more pictures. While we were talking, we heard gunshots, and initially, we thought it was the sound of firecrackers.."Suddenly, we realised it was gunshots. There were thousands of tourists running here and there in panic," he said.."My first concern was the safety of the tourist families. I took Lucky's kid and another child and laid down on the ground. The area was fenced, so it was not easy to escape. I noticed a small opening and asked the families to move out through that opening. They asked me to save the children first. I slipped through it with the two kids and ran towards Pahalgam town," he said..Time for a sober, strategic response. After depositing the children in a safe place, he returned to the spot and escorted out the others safely. "Thanks to Allah, I took all 11 guests safely to Pahalgam," Shah said..Adil Hussain, the son of his maternal uncle, was killed in the terror attack, but he could not attend his final rites as he decided to escort the tourists back, he said.."I knew them (Kuldeep and others) for several years, as I used to accompany my father to Chirmiri to sell shawls. I wanted my guests saved even if I did not survive," said Shah, who has two daughters..Like Agrawal, Sthapak also shared his and his family's pictures with Shah on social media and hailed him profusely for saving their lives.."A letter written from the heart to Nazakat Bhai...My brother, the passion and bravery with which you rescued us from there is still echoing in my ears. There was chaos, gunshots, screams and the shadow of death all around. No ordinary person can do that. The humanity you showed by putting your life at stake is beyond words. I will be grateful to you all my life. I can never forget this favour," he wrote in Hindi on his Facebook page..Sthapak also said he was concerned about Shah's safety.."People will debate about religion and caste, but who will take care of Nazakat Bhai, who presented the most beautiful example of humanity? The heart becomes restless thinking about this," he said..Shah picked up his child, sat him on his shoulders and ran 14 km on dangerous hills, Sthapak said.."Nazakat bhai, you not only saved my life that day, you kept humanity alive. I will never forget you for the rest of my life," he added..Sthapak's wife is a BJP corporator in Chirmiri town.

CBI arrests 2 men in Mumbai who defrauded NEET UG 2025 aspirants; ‘Sought Rs 90 lakh from each candidate'

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday said that it has recently arrested two individuals who were allegedly involved in defrauding aspiring NEET candidates by falsely promising to manipulate their NEET UG 2025 scores in exchange for money. The two accused — Sandeep Shah, a resident of Solapur, and Salim Patel, a resident of Navi Mumbai — were arrested in Mumbai and Sangli on June 9 and 10, respectively. The central agency said that it registered a cheating case on June 9 after discovering that two individuals were involved in duping NEET candidates and their parents by falsely claiming to have connections with officials of the National Testing Agency (NTA) that conducts the examination. 'They assured the victims that they could manipulate the marks of low-scoring candidates in NEET UG 2025 in return for hefty payments,' the CBI stated. To ensure that they are indeed influential people connected with highly placed officials, they would meet gullible parents at five-star hotels like ITC Grand Central, Parel, Mumbai. The accused Shah demanded Rs 90 lakh from each candidate and eventually agreed to accept Rs 87.5 lakh per candidate after negotiations, the probe agency stated. Shah would assure candidates that they would receive details of their purportedly increased marks six hours before the official declaration of results. The accused was in regular contact with the co-accused, who operates an admission consultancy firm in Navi Mumbai, and another individual, who runs a similar consultancy in Pune. A forensic examination of the mobile phones of the arrested individuals (Shah and Patel) revealed incriminating chats containing details of prospective candidates, their roll numbers, admit cards, OMR sheets, and evidence of financial transactions through hawala networks, a CBI officer said. The CBI produced the two accused in court and secured their custody till June 16. The agency did not find any involvement of government officials or NTA personnel in the racket. The CBI is in the process of identifying the victim aspirants and their parents by analysing the phone call details of the accused, and is also analysing financial transactions done by the accused to defraud students and their parents.

NIA Takes Over Probe into Murder of Hindu Activist Suhas Shetty in Bajpe

Mangaluru: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the investigation into the brutal murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty, who was hacked to death in broad daylight in Bajpe town on May 1. The central agency's team reached Mangaluru earlier this week and has initiated preliminary groundwork. Mangaluru Police have officially confirmed the arrival of the NIA team, led by DSP Pawan Kumar. The team has met with City Crime Branch (CCB) officers to collect case-related documents and briefings. The Union government had transferred the case to the NIA following pressure from BJP leaders, particularly Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, who had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a central agency probe. The NIA investigation may also include charge of collision of officials in aiding the murder of Suhas Shetty, which the Karnataka government was wary about. It is stated by the BJP leaders that a certain police official had checked the car of Suhas Shetty twice on the day he was murdered, the checks had been carried out twice within a span of few hours to ensure that Shetty and his co passengers in the car had no weapons. Initial investigations by the local police had pointed to the involvement of a group of eight Muslim youths, allegedly affiliated with the banned organisation Popular Front of India (PFI). The calculated nature of the attack and the possible ideological motivation behind the killing raised concerns about a broader conspiracy. The NIA is likely to revisit the evidence and re-examine the suspects in custody. It may also explore whether provisions under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) are applicable if firm links to proscribed outfits are established. There are also reports suggesting that the agency will look into possible lapses by certain local police personnel. With the NIA's entry, the case is set to widen in scope, potentially extending beyond the immediate assailants to uncover a larger network, if any, behind the murder.

Flight Attendant, Influencer, Family's Heartbeat: 26-Year-Old Who Died In Crash

She was the heartbeat of her house and very popular on social media too, with over 73,000 followers on Instagram. The 26-year-old was a flight attendant with Air India and her life, which had already taken off and was cruising at a high altitude, was about to soar even higher with a wedding planned for next year. Then the Air India flight AI-171 crashed and exploded in a fireball in Ahmedabad on Thursday, taking her life and dreams - and her family's heartbeat - with it. Relatives remembered Roshni Songhare, who lived with her younger brother Vignesh and her parents Rajendra and Shobha on Rajaji Path in Dombivli near Mumbai, as bright and determined. She pursued a flight attendant course, began her career with another airline and later joined Air India. She loved international assignments and was excited when she left home to be part of the 12-member crew, including two pilots, on AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London, relatives recalled. The family was also happy because she had met an officer in the merchant navy through a family acquaintance and was set to be engaged to him later this year. "She was the heartbeat of this home. We were getting her engaged in November and married in March," a close relative was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. "She was so happy to be flying again. We were all looking forward to her wedding. Everything was going right," said her uncle Praveen Sukhdere.. After finding out about the crash, family members tried to contact her and her father and brother rushed to Ahmedabad when they couldn't get through. Then the news broke that the flight, which had 242 people on board, had only one survivor - a passenger who managed to get out of an emergency exit just before the plane caught fire.
