SANDAKAN: Two more National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi) are currently being implemented in Sabah, bringing the total to 132 Nadi centres in the State, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the two Nadi centres under construction are in Kampung Gelam and Pulau Banggi, which will provide digital services to residents in those areas. 'Of the total Nadi centres in Sabah, 118 existing centres are operating well, while 12 new Nadi centres have also begun operations,' he told a press conference after launching the Community Day Programme (HBK) at Nadi Sim Sim, here. Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon, Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Commission Member General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. A total of 1,099 Nadi centres have been established nationwide, with Sabah having the second highest number after Sarawak, which leads with 156 centres. Fahmi said Sandakan district alone has eight operational Nadi centres, including Nadi Sim Sim, Nadi Pekan Batu Sapi, Nadi PPR Taman Mesra, Nadi Taman Mawar, Nadi PPR Taman Murni, Nadi Kampung Sungai Kayu, Nadi Sebait Padas and Nadi PPR Taman Gum Gum. Nearly 12,000 residents in Sandakan's Nadi areas have benefited from various programmes and facilities offered, he said. He said the programmes include Smart Services initiatives covering five key areas: entrepreneurship, lifelong learning, personal wellbeing, awareness campaigns and government initiatives. Nadi is a Communications Ministry initiative implemented through MCMC, providing internet access and technology exposure to local communities while improving socio-economic standards through its facilities and activities. Meanwhile, the HBK programme also featured a Safe Internet Campaign focusing on primary school children under 13, educating them about safe and ethical internet use, Fahmi said. 'This age group are active internet users but also among the most vulnerable to cyber risks. The campaign teaches children basic internet safety rules,' he said. Aidiladha sacrifice strengthens community ties, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The Aidiladha sacrificial rite not only fulfils religious obligations but also serves as a means to strengthen ties among the people and government agencies, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the practice highlights the spirit of unity and reinforces bonds among people from various backgrounds. "I saw a very joyful atmosphere, with children, RTM staff and representatives from IPPTAR (Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute) all coming together to take part in the sacrificial ritual. "I hope that initiatives like this will continue to strengthen the bonds among us, Insya-Allah," he told reporters at RTM's Aidiladha sacrificial event held at Masjid Muhammadi, Angkasapuri, today. A total of 13 cows were sacrificed, contributed by RTM staff and members of the mosque's committee, including one from Fahmi himself for the programme. Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai member of parliament, said his parliamentary office had distributed 76 sacrificial cows to residents in the constituency. "Outside Lembah Pantai, another five cows were sacrificed through the efforts of our team. Alhamdulillah, this reflects the strong cooperation within the community," he said. He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting similar programmes in the future, as they have proven effective in fostering unity among the people. Meanwhile, Masjid Muhammadi Angkasapuri chairman Datuk Mohamed Irwan Mansor said more than 200 individuals participated in the mosque's sacrificial event. "Alhamdulillah, the sacrificial rites were successfully carried out with the involvement of people from all walks of life, including youth, women and children who added to the festive atmosphere," he said. The event also included the distribution of sacrificial meat to asnaf groups in the Angkasapuri area, identified by the mosque committee. "Distribution coupons were given out earlier to eligible recipients, and the meat will be handed over once the cutting process is completed," he said. He added that the annual programme not only strengthens bonds among staff and the local community but also provides direct benefits to those in need.

Fire guts fishing vessel near Safma Market

The Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call at 3.56am and arrived on the scene within two minutes, located about 2 kilometres from their station. Advertisement Fifteen firefighters, assisted by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), police, and members of the public, worked for over six hours to extinguish the flames. The team used seawater, foam, and portable pumps to control the blaze, with the fire declared under control by 9.52am and the operation fully concluded at 10.54am.
