Two more Nadi centres being set up in Sabah

SANDAKAN: Two more National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi) are currently being implemented in Sabah, bringing the total to 132 Nadi centres in the State, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the two Nadi centres under construction are in Kampung Gelam and Pulau Banggi, which will provide digital services to residents in those areas. 'Of the total Nadi centres in Sabah, 118 existing centres are operating well, while 12 new Nadi centres have also begun operations,' he told a press conference after launching the Community Day Programme (HBK) at Nadi Sim Sim, here. Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon, Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Commission Member General (Rtd) Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin and Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj. A total of 1,099 Nadi centres have been established nationwide, with Sabah having the second highest number after Sarawak, which leads with 156 centres. Fahmi said Sandakan district alone has eight operational Nadi centres, including Nadi Sim Sim, Nadi Pekan Batu Sapi, Nadi PPR Taman Mesra, Nadi Taman Mawar, Nadi PPR Taman Murni, Nadi Kampung Sungai Kayu, Nadi Sebait Padas and Nadi PPR Taman Gum Gum. Nearly 12,000 residents in Sandakan's Nadi areas have benefited from various programmes and facilities offered, he said. He said the programmes include Smart Services initiatives covering five key areas: entrepreneurship, lifelong learning, personal wellbeing, awareness campaigns and government initiatives. Nadi is a Communications Ministry initiative implemented through MCMC, providing internet access and technology exposure to local communities while improving socio-economic standards through its facilities and activities. Meanwhile, the HBK programme also featured a Safe Internet Campaign focusing on primary school children under 13, educating them about safe and ethical internet use, Fahmi said. 'This age group are active internet users but also among the most vulnerable to cyber risks. The campaign teaches children basic internet safety rules,' he said. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd said the runway was closed to help with the removal of the aircraft and for 'clearing works'. Advertisement 'A notice to airmen has been issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, and the closure is expected to remain in effect until 4pm today. 'Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates,' it said in a Facebook post. It is not immediately clear what had occurred. In May, the Alor Setar airport's runway was also forced to close after an air force fighter jet skidded on its nose while landing. DOE, Labuan Corporation and Marine Dept investigate oil spill at Marina Jetty

LABUAN: An investigation has been launched into the oil spill incident at the Labuan Public Marine Jetty to identify the parties responsible. The Department of Environment (DOE), in a statement to Bernama today, said the investigation would involve Labuan Corporation and the Marine Department. The incident was first reported to the DOE office in Labuan on Aug 14, and enforcement officers were immediately dispatched to the site for inspection at 2.30 pm the same day. The DOE enforcement officers discovered oil waste patches estimated between 500 to 1,000 litres accumulated along the jetty and sticking to boats. 'Samples of the oil waste were collected and have been sent to the Chemistry Department for of no compound issued to any parties,' it said. It added that an immediate action notice was issued to the jetty operator, and clean-up operations were carried out by the Petroleum Industry of Malaysia Mutual Aid Group (PIMMAG). The DOE confirmed that it is working closely with the Marine Department, Labuan Corporation, and Labuan Port Authority in managing the case. The department reminded the public that discharging oil into Malaysian waters without a licence is an offence under the Environmental Quality Act 1974, and stern legal action will be taken against those found responsible. The department also reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and strict enforcement to safeguard Labuan's marine environment. Gagasan Rakyat Tanjung Aru acts on villagers' call over broken bridge

KOTA KINABALU: Gagasan Rakyat Tanjung Aru says it is keeping close to the ground by swiftly responding to grassroots concerns. Committee member Dr Ritchie Jay Cheng on Monday led a gotong-royong with residents of Kampung Tanjung Aru Lama to repair a wooden jetty that had become dangerously unsafe. The effort came after villagers alerted him about the risk of collapse. Dr Ritchie, who sponsored the works, said the jetty is a vital daily access point for the community. 'Safety of residents is the priority. Once we received the call, we immediately went down to take action,' he said. He added that the programme not only restored a critical facility but also strengthened community spirit.
