Encore Melaka Among Proposed WTD 2025 Celebration Venues

Barnama13-07-2025
MELAKA, July 13 (Bernama) -- Encore Melaka, located in Impression City, Kota Syahbandar, has been proposed as one of the venues for the 2025 World Tourism Day (WTD) celebration this September.
State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman, Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman, said that the venue was chosen for its strategic location along the Straits of Melaka, positioning Encore Melaka as a unique tourism product, with strong potential to attract both domestic and international visitors.
He said Encore Melaka is not only a theatre equipped with a 360-degree rotating stage, but also serves as a centre for arts and cultural performances.
'At the moment, we have several proposed venues, including sites in the Banda Hilir area, and Encore Melaka, which we have submitted to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture for consideration.
'Encore Melaka was proposed due to its coastal location, which allows us to showcase the Straits of Melaka as part of the celebration. Additionally, it is a distinctive tourism product, with the potential to attract international visitors,' he told reporters here today.
He said this after opening the People's Representative for the People (WRUR) programme in the Duyong state constituency, which was also attended by the Duyong assemblyman and deputy chairman of the state Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee, Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem.
Abdul Razak added that, in preparation for WTD 2025, a variety of engaging programmes are being planned to enliven the celebration, in line with Melaka's selection as the launch venue for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
'Several programmes are scheduled for September, including religious events in conjunction with the Maulidur Rasul celebration, under the Islamic Tourism cluster.
He said that further details on the upcoming programmes will be announced to the public soon.

National Month Launch: Bernama Booth Draws Crowd With Hands-on News Anchor Experience

MUAR, July 26 (Bernama) -- Visitors to the Kita MADANI Carnival at Dataran Tanjung Emas here had the opportunity to experience what it's like to be a newsreader, through an interactive activity conducted by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama). Carnival-goers got to experience reading independence-themed news on camera using a real teleprompter at the Ministry of Communications booth at the event held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign. Hana Fadiya Husni, 23, a final-year public relations student at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), said her first experience reading the news in public was more difficult than she had imagined. 'It looks easy on TV, but it's actually quite challenging and a bit nerve-wracking. I stumbled a few times because I was nervous, but overall, it was a fun experience. I'd love to try again if given the chance, perhaps in the sports segment,' she told Bernama when met at the programme today. Meanwhile, 11-year-old Alyssa Ooi Geok Seng, who had a keen interest in broadcasting, said she was thrilled to get the chance to try reading the news on camera. 'This is my first time reading the news with a prompter…I was a little nervous, but happy that I could try using proper intonation and presenting style, like a real newsreader. If given another chance, I want to improve,' said the Year Five student, who aspires to be a journalist in the future. The Kita MADANI Carnival is one of the side events held in conjunction with the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tomorrow. Also lined up is the Bakti Komuniti MADANI programme on July 26 at Taman Tun Sulaiman Ninam Shah, along with the Merdeka 6.8KM Fun Run & Walk and the flag-off of the 2025 Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Expedition Convoy at the same venue tomorrow. --BERNAMA

Borneo Flora Festival 2025 boosts Labuan's economy and regional ties

LABUAN: The Borneo Flora Festival (BFF) 2025 is more than a floral showcase—it is a strategic initiative under the MADANI Government's reform agenda to reshape Labuan's economic future. Launched today, the festival aims to diversify the island's economy beyond oil and gas while fostering regional collaboration. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa highlighted Labuan's progress, noting a 5.4 per cent GDP per capita growth in 2024. 'Labuan's GDP per capita reached RM87,000 last year, the second highest in Malaysia, but we must ensure this translates to real benefits for the people,' she said. Tourism is a key focus, with over one million visitors in 2024—a 15.7 per cent increase from the previous year. The BFF is expected to attract 50,000 visitors, generating RM20 million in direct economic impact for local businesses. 'This festival is a catalyst for sustainable growth, benefiting hotels, food vendors, and small enterprises,' Dr Zaliha added. Beyond economic gains, the festival strengthens regional ties under the theme 'Strengthening Borneo Regional Cooperation.' Thirty-one exhibitors from Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesia are participating. 'This reflects our shared vision to position Borneo as a hub for tropical horticulture and tourism,' she said. The BFF also aligns with ASEAN and BIMP-EAGA goals, promoting cross-border trade and cultural exchange. 'Our diversity is our strength, and this festival opens doors for investment and knowledge sharing,' Dr Zaliha concluded. - Bernama

AirAsia launches KL, Kuching–Pontianak direct flights from Sept 12

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Malaysia has introduced two new direct routes linking Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The flights, set to commence on September 12, 2025, will make AirAsia the sole airline operating international flights to the city. The expansion follows AirAsia's rapid growth in Indonesia, including recent launches of the Kuala Lumpur–Palembang route in July and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur–Semarang service in September. 'With the introduction of Pontianak, AirAsia Malaysia will operate to a total of 17 destinations in Indonesia through 223 weekly flights between the two countries, solidifying its position as the airline with the widest network serving Indonesia,' the company stated. These new routes aim to enhance regional connectivity and support tourism targets, including Malaysia's goal of attracting 4.3 million Indonesian tourists in 2025 and Sarawak's target of five million visitor arrivals by year-end. Additionally, the expansion aligns with Indonesia's national target of 16 million international arrivals, with Malaysia remaining a key source market. The routes were unveiled during the Sarawak Travel Fair in Pontianak, officially launched by West Kalimantan Governor Drs Ria Norsan. He highlighted the benefits of the new flights, stating, 'West Kalimantan stands ready to welcome more Malaysian visitors while providing convenient access for Indonesians seeking business opportunities, leisure travel and medical services in Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur.' Malaysia's Consul in Pontianak, Azizul Zekri Abd Rahim, emphasised the significance of the new connectivity in strengthening bilateral ties. 'With Visit Malaysia 2026 on the horizon, this expansion comes at the perfect moment to further boost tourism, foster cultural exchange and enhance regional ties between both nations,' he said. AirAsia Malaysia CEO Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra noted the strong demand for travel between Malaysia and West Kalimantan as a key driver for the expansion. 'By launching flights from our main hub in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, we are providing greater convenience and flexibility for our guests while contributing to the tourism growth and economic development of both Malaysia and Indonesia,' he added. - Bernama
