Wall Street to scrutinize Apple over China struggles and slow AI progress

Apple has been under pressure this year. It's playing catch-up to its fellow tech giants on artificial intelligence, it's seen its stock fall by double digits since the year began, it closed a store in China for the first time ever this week, and looming US tariffs on Beijing threaten its supply chain. On Thursday, the company will release its third-quarter earnings of the fiscal year as investors scrutinize how the iPhone maker might turn things around.
Despite the gloomy outlook, the company is still worth more than $3tn, and Wall Street appears optimistic it will deliver on earnings. Analysts are expecting Apple to report a 4% rise in revenue over the last quarter to $89.3bn, according to S&P Global.
'Apple has grown accustomed to having revenue growth in this high-margin services business, which masks other areas of the business not performing as well,' said Dipanjan Chatterjee, a vice-president and principal analyst for Forrester.
Chatterjee points to several issues that have led to Apple's less-than-stellar performance of late. He says Apple has lagged on hardware innovation, causing 'consumer apathy' and its AI rollout has been glitchy. Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI product, has been limited to incremental features and rather than transformational upgrades. And it's been more than a year since Apple announced a suite of AI upgrades to its voice assistant Siri – many of which have yet to be released.
'This work [on Siri] needed more time to reach our high-quality bar,' said Craig Federighi, Apple's vice-president of software engineering, during the company's developer conference in June.
Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs have also been a pain point for the company as the US president pushes his desire for manufacturing to boom in the US. The vast majority of Apple's products are made in China, with about 90% of iPhones assembled there, in spite of recent efforts to shift production elsewhere. Apple chief Tim Cook said during the company's last quarterly earnings call that he expected the China tariffs to add $900m to its costs this quarter.
Apple has attempted to pivot, moving more of its manufacturing to other countries such as India and Vietnam. However, this week, Trump announced a rise in tariffs on India, too, up to 25% starting on 1 August.
Because of the external and internal pressures, Apple has seen its share price plummet this year. Once the industry leader of the 'Magnificent Seven' – the most valuable publicly traded companies in the world, all American technology giants – Apple boasted the highest-performing stock and biggest market capitalization on the US stock market.

It is one of five commercial properties in the area that are due to be knocked down. They will be replaced with new homes and business units as part of a wider scheme by the local council to regenerate the area. Mini Market, Mattress and Divan Centre, Sweet Sensations and Hi Sushi are the other retail outlet set to be flattened as part of the plans. Wakefield Council was given nearly £25million worth of funding for the scheme from the government's Towns Fund in 2019. The work was approved following a planning proposal which had been submitted by the council but a planning officer's report said a further application would have to be submitted before the site could be redeveloped. Lower Kirkgate is a key route to get to the waterfront and is considered a major gateway to the city centre. The council had previously called the area a 'blight' on the city, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. It is also hoped that the redevelopment will encourage 'younger professionals' to live in the city centre and "bring year-round day and evening vibrancy" to the area, according to the council. Wilko closed its doors for good in 2023 after nearly a century in business, with more than 400 stores shutting and 12,000 staff affected. Visiting the new Wilko Store The news comes after the homeware giant Wayfair slashed its UK workforce by more than half in just two years, as it grapples with tumbling sales and a sharp drop in profit. The US-based furniture retailer, which operates across Britain, cut staff numbers from 847 in 2022 to just 405 by the end of 2024, according to fresh filings with Companies House. Wilko isn't the only retailer feeling the pinch on the high street. Furniture favourite collapsed into administration in 2022 after failing to find a buyer, leading to hundreds of job losses. Habitat also shut down all standalone stores in 2021, moving exclusively online after years of underperformance. Even major players have been forced to adapt. Argos has continued to reduce its physical footprint, shutting dozens of standalone shops and moving into parent company Sainsbury's stores to save costs. Retail experts say changing consumer habits, rising costs and weaker demand are continuing to batter the home and furniture sector. Many shoppers have tightened their belts amid soaring bills and higher interest rates, with big-ticket items like sofas and beds often the first to be cut from household budgets. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

SAO PAULO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - China has approved 183 new Brazilian coffee companies to export products to the Chinese market, according to a social media post of the Chinese embassy in Brazil on Saturday. The measure, a boon to local exporters after the United States government's announcement of steep tariffs on Brazilian coffee and other products, took effect on July 30. The new Chinese export permits are valid for five years, according to the post. The U.S.'s 50% tariff on some Brazilian products will begin on August 6. The levy represents a challenge for commodities traders and Brazilian coffee exporters, who need to find alternatives for the roughly 8 million bags sold to U.S. coffee processors every year. China is Brazil's top trade partner overall while the U.S. is a big buyer of Brazilian beef and orange juice, among other products. In June, Brazilian coffee exports into the U.S. totaled 440,034 60-kilo bags, 7,87 times more than Brazil's sales into China of nearly 56,000 bags that month, according to trade data compiled by industry lobby Cecafe. The Brazilian ministry of agriculture and Cecafe did not have an immediate comment. China's customs authority could not be immediately reached as it was outside the business hours. Brazil supplies about a third of the U.S. coffee demand each year, a trade valued at $4.4 billion in the 12 months ended in June.
