Udangudi power plants to be commissioned by the end of 2025, says Electricity Minister
The first of the two 660-megawatt (MW) power plants being constructed at Udangudi in Thoothukudi district would be commissioned by July, with the second likely to be commissioned in October this year, said Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji in the Assembly on Tuesday.
Speaking during the demand for grants for the Electricity Department, he said more than 91% of the work in the Udangudi power project (2x660 MW) had been completed.
He said the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) Stage 3 project with a capacity of 800 MW, which was initiated by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, was commissioned and inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on March 7, 2024. The power plant has produced 1,2283 million units. Similarly, 60% of the work on the Ennore SEZ power project, comprising two 660-MW power stations, has been completed, and it is expected to be commissioned by March 2026.
In response to criticism over power tariff hike, Mr. Senthilbalaji said that during the last AIADMK regime, the tariff was increased thrice — 37% in 2012, 3.57% in 2013, and 16% in 2016, and was reduced by 4% in 2017.
In the renewable energy segment for the fiscal 2024-25, 2,786 MW of solar and wind projects were commissioned, with the State being the leader in the renewable energy generation having a total installed capacity of 27,736.56 MW. Also, the Electricity Department achieved the highest target of hydroelectric generation of 4,329 MW fixed by the Central Electricity Authority, the Minister said.
He added that when Mr. Stalin took over the reins, the total installed capacity of power generation was 32,595 MW, and within four years, it had increased to 39,770 MW.
Mr. Senthilbalaji said the State's electricity demand had gone past the 20,000-MW mark, touching an all-time high of 20,830 MW in 2024-25, with the total electricity consumers standing at 3.44 crore. The highest demand in 2020-21 was 16,481 MW.

Mau's MP-MLA court to hear Ansari plea today
1 2 Varanasi: Disqualified MLA Abbas Ansari's appeal against his sentencing in the 'Hisab kitab' hate speech episode by the CJM (MP-MLA) court was filed before the session court of Mau district on Monday. Ansari's advocate Daroga Singh said that the appeal was moved before the sessions court on Monday, which transferred the case to the court of ADJ (MP-MLA) Rajiv Vats where the hearing will take place on Tuesday. Through this appeal, Ansari challenged the May 31 CJM (MP-MLA) court decision of sentencing him to two years of imprisonment, he added. On the next day of sentencing him by the court, his membership from the state Assembly was terminated. Ansari was sentenced in a case of hate speech lodged against him on March 4, 2022, after his speech delivered at a meeting in the Paharpur area on March 3, 2022, went viral on social media. While contesting the 2022 Assembly polls from the Mau Sadar seat as a Samajwadi Party-Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party alliance candidate, Ansari, in his Paharpur speech on March 3, 2022, stated, "After the formation of the SP-led govt, the officials would have to give 'hisab-kitab' (account) of their work of the past regime before getting transferred. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Costco Shoppers Say This Wrinkle Cream Is "Actually Worth It" The Skincare Magazine Undo " Ansari won the election, but he went to jail following his arrest by the Prayagraj unit of the ED in a money laundering case in Feb 2023. Assembly resolution to rename Dibrugarh airport after Bhupen
1 2 3 Guwahati: Assam assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to rename the Dibrugarh airport in honour of the legendary musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika as the state prepares a year-long centenary celebration of his birthday from Sept 8. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with ministers and MLAs from both the treasury and opposition benches, paid tributes to Hazarika's enduring legacy, especially his message of universal love and humanity through his creative works. Several members even sang his iconic songs and recited his compositions. State transport minister Jogen Mohan moved the govt resolution recommending that the central govt rename the Dibrugarh airport as 'Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Airport, Dibrugarh', during the day-long special session convened for this purpose. Sarma said the special session was convened because an Assembly resolution is mandatory for renaming any airport or railway station. "First, the state cabinet has to make the decision. It has to be passed by the Assembly and then, the union cabinet will approve it. This has paved the way for renaming the airport anytime now after Sept 8," he added. Sarma, participating in the discussion, emphasised Hazarika's identity as a 'humanist' above anything else. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Don't Forget To Block Ads Before Monday Lifestyle Tech Tips Click Here Undo Prime Minister Narendra Modi will grace the inauguration of the centenary birthday celebration here on Sept 8. Assam CM slams Rahul Gandhi for ‘betraying' nation; praises Owaisi, Tharoor
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday praised several opposition leaders for defending India's stance on international platforms following the country's retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack, while launching a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of undermining national interests. Speaking during a discussion in the Assam Assembly about the successful 'Operation Sindoor', CM Sarma acknowledged the efforts of opposition figures like Shashi Tharoor, Asaduddin Owaisi and Supriya Sule, commending them for standing up for India on foreign soil. 'I am thankful to Congress and other opposition leaders, especially Shashi Tharoor, who have strongly defended India's position abroad. Leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi and Supriya Sule also upheld the nation's honour outside the country,' CM Sarma said. However, the Chief Minister drew a sharp contrast with Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha of betraying both the nation and the armed forces. 'Rahul Gandhi did not stand with the country. He betrayed the nation. He betrayed our armed forces,' the Assam CM alleged, criticising Rahul Gandhi for raising questions about India's military losses during the conflict. CM Sarma claimed that while Gandhi repeatedly sought details on India's casualties during the operation, he showed no concern about the damage inflicted on Pakistan. 'There's a difference between questioning losses after a military operation and doing so while it's ongoing. Rahul Gandhi chose the latter — and never once asked what losses Pakistan suffered,' the Chief Minister asserted. Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, and the resolution in the Assembly marked a unified acknowledgment of the Indian armed forces' role in the counter-offensive. Earlier on Monday, CM Sarma asserted that the government would speed up the process of deporting illegal immigrants from the state to safeguard the indigenous community. While speaking at the Assembly, CM Sarma said: "The state government is set to use the 1950 law to expel the illegal immigrants here. The apex court of the country has also given a nod regarding this. The administrative machinery will work accordingly to make Assam free from illegal immigrants.' The Chief Minister also pressed for safeguarding the interests of Assamese people. He said, 'I am an Assamese first and a Chief Minister later.' The Assam government has decided to invoke a little-known law from 1950 -- the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Order -- to fast-track the deportation of undocumented immigrants, bypassing the usual judicial process.
