Earlier in the day, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh moved a Suspension of Business notice in the Upper House on Friday and demanded a discussion on the 25 per cent tariffs imposed by the United States.
He gave the notice to the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha, under Rule 267 (Notice of Motion for Suspension of Rules) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha).

He wrote, "I would like to draw your attention to a very important and serious issue that is linked to India's economic, trade and diplomatic policy. By the United States of America, a tariff of 25% has been imposed on India's major exports in sectors such as auto components, electronics, jewellery, textiles and processed food from August 2025."
Sanjay Singh added, "In addition, economic punitive action has been taken on India's defence and energy relations with Russia, which has not only caused massive economic instability but has also seen widespread panic among domestic and international investors."
Rajya Sabha is set to take up significant legislative and procedural business, including a statutory resolution seeking the extension of President's Rule in Manipur and the consideration of the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will move a resolution for approval of the continuance in force of the Proclamation dated February 13, 2025, in respect of Manipur, issued under Article 356 of the Constitution by the President, for a further period of six months with effect from August 13, 2025, according to the List of Business issued by the Rajya Sabha.
The President's rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, days after N Biren Singh resigned from the Chief Minister's position.
Both houses of Parliament have witnessed heated exchanges and adjournments during the initial days of the Monsoon Session, but are expected to proceed with key legislative business today. The session is scheduled to continue until August 21.

UK CALLING TN: FTA OPPORTUNITY
What does Tamil Nadu stand to gain from the recently announced free trade agreement with the UK? Quite a lot. It offers the state the "opportunity to expand its global industrial footprint across sectors where it already holds a competitive edge," says state industries minister TRB Rajaa. That's because the sectors that the FTA will positively impact include auto components, textiles, leather, and footwear – all of which are critical industries in TN's manufacturing and export basket. Says industry secretary V Arun Roy: "The UK FTA is a big positive for TN. In textiles, it makes our exports to Britain more competitive, and they are expected to more than double. The leather and footwear industry will also witness an export surge. Another beneficiary of more business and job creation will be our well-developed auto component industry." Auto components form the largest chunk of TN's nearly $117 billion (FY24-25) engineering export ecosystem. "In the auto and auto components, the tariff reduction from over 100% to just 10% creates massive upside," he says. "Tamil Nadu's globally connected auto industry, which includes companies like Tata Motors (through Jaguar Land Rover) and TVS Motor Company (which owns Norton), can now seamlessly integrate their UK and Indian operations, scaling faster and creating more high-value jobs here in the state," he adds. State-headquartered auto giants are chuffed about this chance to tap the global market via the UK. Says Arun Roy, "The automobile industry with UK operations like Tata-JLR and TVS can use this low tariff opportunity to closely integrate their TN operations with their global supply chain." "As a company with a presence in both India and the UK, (the FTA) will accelerate our ability to deliver cost-effective solutions to global customers." And where the companies go, skills follow. "The state is also a leader in creating qualified professionals in the service sector. These professionals will get more job opportunities in the UK," says Arun Roy. Regarding exports, Tamil Nadu's current strength lies in passenger vehicles (PVs), auto components, and tyres. But, it is now eyeing segments like electric drivetrains and engine management systems to "diversify its portfolio," said state MSME secretary Atul Anand in an earlier interview. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Policy 2021 and EV Policy 2023 incentivize investments in EVs and electronics manufacturing as part of the state's focus on high-value components. The state faces competition from global manufacturing hubs, such as China and South Korea, which have established dominance in EV components. The FTA will be a clear advantage on that front. Given that MSMEs "form the backbone of the auto component industry, they stand to gain from the liberalized terms of trade and improved access to UK markets," adds Marwah. The agreement will be critical for TN's other industries, such as textiles, where TN clocked $8 billion worth of exports last fiscal. "In textiles, the deal is expected to more than double exports from hubs like Tirupur to the UK, making our high-quality knitwear even more attractive in European markets," says Minister TRB Rajaa. The industry seems to concur. According to Dr A Sakthivel, vice chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council, the FTA will allow exporters to enjoy a stronger edge over the competition from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China in the UK market. The same goes for footwear and leather, where Tamil Nadu makes up for nearly 40% of India's output. "The reduction in UK tariffs will boost both traditional leather goods and our fast-growing non-leather manufacturing clusters," Rajaa adds. J Rafiq Ahmed, chairman of Kothari Industrial Corporation, believes that the FTA "will make it cheaper to export labour-intensive goods". Given that the UK is India's third-largest trading partner as far leather and leather products are concerned and TN clocked $1.63 billion in leather exports in FY24-25, the zero duty deal is important for the state's exporters. Bihar SIR: Gopalganj sees largest dip in voters at over 15%, Seemanchal's Kishanganj & Purnia follow
According to the EC data, the draft electoral rolls based on the SIR exercise does not include over 65.6 lakh voters from 38 districts in Bihar. Out of this total dip of 65.6 lakh voters—the EC explained—more than 22 lakh had died, over 36 lakh have permanently shifted or were untraceable, and another seven lakh voters have enrolled as electors in multiple places. New Delhi: Gopalganj, Kishanganj and Purnia in Bihar saw the highest percentage of voter deletion in the draft rolls released by the Election Commission (EC) pursuant to its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Data pertaining to the exercise shows that while Gopalganj saw a 15.01 percent dip in voters as compared to the numbers that it had on 24 June before the exercise began, Purnia saw a 12.08 percent deletion whereas it was 11.82 percent in Kishanganj. These are followed by Madhubani (10.44 percent) and Bhagalpur (10.19 percent). Two of these five districts with the highest percentage of voter deletions come under the Seemanchal region, which has the highest percentage of Muslim population in the eastern state. Among Bihar's districts, Kishanganj has the highest Muslim population (68 percent), and Purnia has about 38 percent Muslim population according to the 2001 Census. The Seemanchal region encompasses four districts of Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Katihar. Also referred to as the Kosi-Seemanchal area, it includes Saharsa, Supaul, and Madhepura along with the aforementioned 4 districts. A district-wise breakdown of the draft electoral roll revision, seen by ThePrint, shows that voters have been deleted at an average of 8.06percent per district. Out of these 7 districts, four—Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar (8.27 percent) and Saharsa (9.46 percent)—saw deletions above the average percentage of deletions. The remaining three saw deletions below average: Araria (7.59 percent), Supaul (7.81 percent) and Madhepura (6.85 percent). While Patna district saw the highest dip with 3.95 lakh voters not included in the electoral draft roll, its percentage dip remained below average at 7.84 percent. The EC has clarified that claims, objections can be filed between 1 August and 1 September to add the name of any eligible elector, or to delete the name of any ineligible elector. 'All eligible electors are appealed to check their names in the draft list, and if their name does not exist in the list, they should fill and submit Form 6 along with the Declaration Form…As per SIR orders, NO NAME CAN BE DELETED from the draft Electoral Roll, by the concerned ERO/AERO without giving a hearing to the elector and subsequently passing a written order, which is appealable to the DM and the CEO,' it said in a press note on 1 August. The electoral roll exercise is under challenge before the Supreme Court, with pleas filed by several petitioners including Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, Bharat Jodo Abhiyan national convener Yogendra Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha, and non-profit organisations Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL). The petitioners have alleged that the exercise is arbitrary, and have also questioned the timeline as well as the timing of the exercise, with the Bihar elections set to take place later this year.
