Banksy, Britten and The Darkness inspire youngsters
Six students from three different high schools in Lowestoft have used the inspirations to help them write the 2025 Suffolk Day proclamation.
Their words, focusing on a "brighter future" for Britain's most easterly town, have been read at the Houses of Parliament ahead of a ceremony in Lowestoft on Suffolk Day - which is taking place on Saturday 21 June.
Suffolk Day, inspired by Yorkshire Day, was started in 2017 and is celebrated on the summer solstice, as Ness Point is the first to see the sunrise.
Lily-Rose and Tilly from Benjamin Britten Academy, Beth and Ella from Ormiston Denes Academy, and Willow and Naomi from East Point Academy each wrote parts of the proclamation.
It starts with: "We want to tell you about the bright future that awaits Lowestoft. A place where creativity and community thrive."
Beth, 15, included references to Suffolk councils declaring a climate crisis in 2019, and pledging action.
She said: "It does provide our area with hope, because we can see the impact it has had on our local area."
The proclamation continues: "Art and culture are the bright future of Lowestoft.
"We are the birthplace of Benjamin Britten and his inspirational music that transcended the globe.
"We are the canvas for Banksy's spraycation. We are home to three flourishing theatres.
"Moreover, Lowestoft was the maiden voyage for the award-winning band The Darkness."
Lily-Rose said: "There's a lot of art around the town. They've done lots to incorporate arts and culture where we live."
The proclamation continues: "As we look ahead, Lowestoft stands tall as a beacon of progress and pride - a town where the spirit of innovation meets the warmth of tradition.
"From our historic roots to our forward-thinking future, we are a community united by purpose and place."
The Suffolk Day ceremony includes presenting medals to celebrate community achievements, and moves to a different host town each year.
This year events in Lowestoft coincide with the annual First Light Festival, which takes place on the beach on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June.

Darren Till warns fellow Smesh Bro Khamzat: DDP can ‘give him hell'
Former UFC title challenger Darren Till has unique insight into UFC 319's main event between Dricus Du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev. Back in 2022, Till began training often with Khamzat in Las Vegas, Nevada. The two became fast friends and were soon ripping around the Strip together, driving fast cars and shooting machine guns. Just like that, the 'Smesh Bros' were born, a bromance that has spawned at least one questionable tattoo. On a more professional level, Till cornered Chimaev for his chaotic brawl against Gilbert Burns. Later that year, Till went to war with 'DDP' in December, ultimately getting submitted in the third round after a competitive start (watch here). In the second round, Till actually had some of the best success on the feet of any 'Stillknocks' opponent. It's still a fight the English talent wants to get back, though that's rather unlikely given du Plessis is UFC champion and Till isn't even signed with the promotion currently. Given his experience with both men, Till's insight into the match up is worth noting. Contrary to some, Till expects Du Plessis to give his former training partner hell and make it difficult, but he believes Chimaev and his conditioning will rise to the occasion anyway. 'DDP will be facing the highest level of wrestling, especially in MMA,' Till explained to 'Can Khamzat beat him early on? Most definitely. But can DDP give Khamzat hell? Most definitely. 'I think it's 60-40 in Khamzat's favour, but I just say, when it gets into later rounds, does Khamzat have it [the stamina] to go that? But I think he's training with Arman Tsarukyan, so I think it's going to be a demolition job, well I hope it is. But don't be surprised if DDP gives him problems because he is a phenomenal fighter. I think he's going to drag Khamzat into deep waters, but I think Khamzat is going to be prepared, so I do see Khamzat winning any which way. But you cannot look past DDP.' Currently, Till is more focused on boxing than MMA. He's next scheduled to face former Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold at in upcoming Misfits Boxing 22: 'Ring of Thrones' pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event on DAZN on Sat., Aug. 30, 2025, at AO Arena in Manchester, England. Winner of the 2025 'World's Ugliest Dog' contest is crowned: Meet Petunia
A hairless English-French bulldog mix is now the world's ugliest dog. Meet Petunia, the 2-year-old pooch crowned the winner of the World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair on Friday, Aug. 8. The grounds are about 40 miles north of San Francisco. The annual contest, which judges canines on their extracurricular activities and not-so-cute appearances, helps pet shelters find animals forever homes. According to its website, the contest has taken place for nearly five decades and many of the contestants "have been rescued from shelters and puppy mills, to find loving homes in the hands of those willing to adopt." "Dogs of all breeds and sizes have warmed our hearts and filled our lives with unconditional love," the site reads. "This world-renowned event celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique." Last year's World's Ugliest Dog contest winner was Wild Thang, a then 8-year-old Pekingese from Oregon. More dog news: 'Hilarious' video shows toddler, black lab left perplexed after ball vanishes during fetch The fair announced Petunia took home the first-place trophy, according to The New York Times and ABC7 in San Francisco.
