Ellen White names England's chief Euro 2025 threat... and it's not Spain

Former England striker Ellen White has backed her old teammates to go all the way at Women's Euro 2025, saying the Lionesses can beat anyone in the world on their day.

It's been three years since Chloe Kelly sparked delirium at a packed Wembley by poking home the extra-time goal that won Euro 2022 for the Lionesses.
After years of near misses and what-ifs, England had finally won a major tournament and the victory proved a landmark moment for women's football in England.
"I sprinted off the bench and Chloe jumped into my arms, so I had her boobs in my face!" says White, who won 113 caps and scored 52 goals for her country. "Beating Germany at Wembley in such dramatic fashion… you couldn't wish for a more iconic moment."
Ellen was leading the Lioness's attack back then, but she'll be covering the action for the BBC this summer as England begin the defence of their title with a set of tough Group D fixtures.
"England has a great squad with some amazing talent," she explains. "They can beat anyone on their day, but they're in a challenging group. They have to get points on the board as quickly as they can, because France and the Netherlands are great teams and Wales are going to be highly-motivated in their first ever tournament."

World champions Spain are the favourites with the bookies, yet Ellen reckons France could be England's biggest rivals for the title.

"They've got some really special players,' she says. "Obviously, we've seen the omission of Wendie Renard from the squad, because she's got so much experience, but they've got so many young, talented players."
Yet Les Bleus aren't the only ones to have lost experienced players and England will be without goalkeeper Mary Earps, defender Millie Birght and forward Fran Kirby, who've all hung up their boots at international level.
"Those three are huge characters and had a huge part in winning Euro 2022," says White. "But the group still has plenty of leaders and great players, so it's about other people stepping up and filling those voids. You have to move on quickly in football!"
As for England's most important players, she says Alessia Russo will be crucial.
"As a fellow number 9, I have to pick her!" she explains. "She's a great goalscorer, but her hold-up play and running off the ball is also excellent. Her Arsenal teammate and team captain Leah Williamson is also a great leader and she'll be huge for us."
"I also want to mention Lauren Hemp, who has so much creativity from the left, while Lauren James is another one to watch out for and someone described her as a cheat code recently, because she can get you out of any situation.

Yet the most important figure in the England set up is undoubtedly their Dutch coach, Sarina Weigman, who won Euro 2022 with England and Euro 2017 with the Netherlands.
"She's going for her third Euros in a row, so she must be doing something right!" says White. "Sarina is a great communicator and has real belief in her players and they really love her. I still love her because she made all my dreams come true when we won the Euros three years ago!"

A dramatic must-win last game of the season to avoid relegation to Serie C and possibly the end of the club itself. Seven minutes from time, Giuliano Fiorini finally scored and the Biancocelesti won. Now they had to face a playoff with Taranto and Campobasso. There were high hopes before the first match against Taranto. The team, who had been in psychological and physical difficulty, in the final stages of the Campionato seemed to regain the spirit that had characterised the first part of the season when Lazio were closer to the top spots than the relegation battle. The playoffs were held in Naples, seen as neutral ground. It certainly was not. Advertisement Taranto vs Lazio was held on Saturday, June 27. 25,000 fans from Rome invaded Naples. One single traffic jam on the Roma Napoli motorway right from the early hours of the day, 197 kilometres bumper to bumper. Many fans missed the first half. There were also clashes with the Napoli fans, a bus went up in flames. The match saw Lazio attacking but with caution and Taranto parking the bus in front of the goal. In the second half in the 65th minute, the Apulians scored. A shot from the centre of the box was saved by Giuliano Terraneo, the ball arrived to Antonio De Vitis two metres offside, simple tap in. Everybody looked to the linesman who instead of raising his flag, ran towards the centre of the pitch. Lazio tried a comeback but only managed to hit a crossbar with Luca Brunetti. Despair. All eyes were then on the second match between Taranto and Campobasso in the hope that Taranto won. The teams basically did nothing the entire match, content with the goalless draw. Lazio now needed to beat Campobasso to stay in Serie B. Sunday, July 5. Another mass exodus from Rome, this time without too much logistic trouble. The Biancocelesti approached the game like the first one, with a cautious but attacking spirit. A couple of chances but the first half ended 0-0. Advertisement Back in the city, silence reigned. Most were watching the game on TV, others were listening to the radio. Even some Roma fans for once were supporting Lazio. Zero traffic, Rome was absolutely dead. At the beginning of the second half, there was a cross inside the Lazio penalty box. Francesco Boito was all alone in the middle of the penalty area and all he needed to do was to aim his header on either side and it would have been a goal. At this point, there is a need for a little digression. A famous Italian sports journalist, Sandro Petrucci, once said that when Lazio were on the edge of the abyss, there was always an invisible hand that avoided the fall. As if the Gods made sure that Lazio never disappeared. This must have been the case. Boito headed the ball centrally towards Terraneo who saved comfortably. Ball in the other half, Mimmo Caso passed to Massimo Piscedda on the left just outside the box, a marvellous cross, Fabio Poli jumped higher than anyone and headed the ball into the net. In Memory: Vincenzo D'Amico Vincenzo D'Amico was one of the greatest talents in Italian football. Born in Latina, near Rome, on November 5, 1954, he joined Lazio in 1970. He was undisciplined, often got into trouble and certainly liked his food, but he was a natural. By the time he debuted professionally on May 21 1971 against Modena, he was already a well-known name among fans. Many went to see that match just to have a first glimpse of Lazio's Golden Boy, as many called him at the time. It took time for him to reach the first eleven because he suffered two serious injuries which kept him away from the pitch until 1973. He debuted in Serie A on October 14 and from then on basically never left the team. Manager Tommaso Maestrelli made sure Vincenzo never got into trouble by confiscating his driver's licence, limiting his wages, and making sure, via Captain Pino Wilson, that he did not overeat. It worked as D'Amico, at only 19, became one of the protagonists of Lazio's scudetto. Advertisement In times of difficulty, Vincenzo was always there. Like in 1976 when after Giorgio Chinaglia's departure for New York Cosmos he took the team by the hand and led them to a massive victory against Milan which meant that only a point was then needed at Como to avoid relegation. Or in 1980 when, after the arrests of Bruno Giordano, Wilson, Lionello Manfredonia and Massimo Cacciatori, he led a team of youngsters to safety, even though Lazio were then punished with relegation anyway. Again in 1982, this time fighting to avoid Serie C and 2-0 down after just 15 minutes, he scored a hat-trick against Varese allowing Lazio to avoid serious trouble. In total D'Amico played 338 games for Lazio, ninth in appearances for the club, and scored 51 goals. He died in Rome on July 1, 2023 – he had been fighting against cancer for the previous couple of years. D'Amico is a Lazio legend. Loved by the fans, his attachment to Lazio in times of trouble was always commendable and he will never be forgotten. The Most Important Packers: No. 17 — Devonte Wyatt
Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt is hoping for a big season. The Green Bay Packers went 11-6 last season, sweeping the NFC West and the AFC South along the way. Overall, though, no one in the building was happy. The Packers failed to build on their terrific finish to the 2023 campaign, settled for the No. 7 seed in the NFC playoffs, and lost a Wild Card game to eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia. Afterwards, general manager Brian Gutekunst turned up the heat on everybody in the building. 'We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,' Gutekunst said. 'I think it's time we started competing for championships.' Those are fair expectations. The Packers return 20 of 22 starters, and appear to have upgraded the roster via free agency and the draft. With several third and fourth year players trending upward, Green Bay should be poised to make a move. 'I think they're ready,' Gutekunst said. Now, it's time for the Packers to prove their G.M. right. Green Bay's first training camp practice is July 23. Between now and then I will count down the '30 Most Important Packers' heading into the 2025 campaign. At No. 17 is defensive tackle Devonte 17 Devonte Wyatt, DT Last season Wyatt was second on the team in sacks (5.0), quarterback hits (9.0) and tackles for loss (9.0) last season, despite missing three games with an ankle injury. He also had two fumble recoveries. Wyatt had three sacks, five quarterback hits and a fumble recovery in the first four games. Then he missed Weeks 5-7 and never had the same impact after returning on Oct. to date Wyatt was a first round draft pick in 2022 who spent the first three months of his rookie season primarily watching. In fact, after 13 games in 2022, Wyatt had just three pressures, no sacks and no quarterback hits. Wyatt's final four games — in which he had five pressures, 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hits — gave the Packers hope that his potential could eventually lead to production. So Green Bay let starters Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed walk in free agency and increased Wyatt's role. In 2023, Wyatt began proving why he was a first round draft pick, posting 36 tackles (18 solo), 5.5 sacks, six tackles for a loss, 11 quarterback hits and a fumble recovery. Wyatt played 49.7% of the defensive snaps that season, tied for fourth on the team in tackles for loss and ranked fourth on the team in sacks and quarterback hits. The 6-foot-3, 304-pound Wyatt had just one elite season at Georgia. That came in 2021 when Wyatt had 39 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 14 starts on a Bulldogs team that won the national championship. Wyatt, who began his career at Hutchinson Community College before transferring to Georgia, then went to the 2022 NFL Combine and ran the 40-yard dash in a blistering 4.77 seconds — one of the fastest times by a defensive lineman. Physical gifts have never been an issue for Wyatt, though. It's the mental side. He scored an 8 on the 50-question Wonderlic test before the 2022 draft, less than half the NFL average of 19. 'That's a big deal. Don't kid yourself,' one NFL scout told me about low Wonderlic scores. 'Now some guys can overcome those scores. But a lot of times when guys bust, you go back and look and sure enough, that Wonderlic score was low.' Wyatt was also arrested in 2020 for three misdemeanor charges — family violence, criminal trespass, and damage to property. While the charges were later dropped, there were several questions about his character before the draft. 'Obviously he had a couple hiccups there at Georgia,' Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said after drafting Wyatt played 33.24% of the defensive snaps last year due to injury and a log jam up front. With T.J. Slaton's departure in free agency, Wyatt's role should increase dramatically. The Packers picked up Wyatt's fifth-year option in May, and his salary for 2026 will be $12.938 million. Both sides would like to get a long term deal done, though, making this a critical year for Said It … 'He's a quick twitch-up, twitchy defensive lineman and a guy that can really explode off the football. So, that is a benefit of this style of system where you're trying to, we're more of a penetrating front as opposed to like a read-and-react playing technique. Bayern's Musiala out for 'long period' with broken fibula

The 22-year-old Germany international was hurt in a challenge with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma as Bayern lost 2-0 in the quarter-finals in Atlanta on Saturday. This hits FC Bayern," said sporting director Max Eberl. "Everyone knows how immensely important Jamal is for our game and what a central role he has in our team. "Furthermore, there's also a huge human impact and we all feel for him: Jamal has just come back from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He'll get everything he needs from us.
