46-year-old Manny Pacquiao delivers an age-defying performance
Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao returned to the ring at age 46 and delivered a remarkable performance against the 30-year-old WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas on Sunday. After the bout, Pacquiao said, 'I thought I won the fight. It was a close fight. He was very tough.'
Fight to the finish: The fight ended in a majority draw, with two judges scoring it 114-114 and a third giving Barrios a narrow 115-113 edge. CompuBox data showed Barrios landed 120 of 668 total punches to Pacquiao's 101 of 577 and Barrios landed more jabs (45-20) while Pacquiao led in power punches, 81-75. The draw marked Barrios's second straight draw and came nearly four years after Pacquiao's last professional fight. 'I had to find a way to finish the fight better but my opponent is so tough,' Pacquiao added. 'He threw a lot of good combinations and had defense.'
Muted fan enthusiasm: In the Philippines, public excitement was noticeably lower in the days before the fight compared to Pacquiao's previous bouts. Lifelong fan Dennis Marcaida, a resident of Cavite, explained to The Rebel Yellow that 'coming out of retirement after years of layoff is significant' and that Pacquiao's political career 'has altered his public image.' He added, 'We just quietly watched the stream online on our phones without making much noise. There's a different emotional attachment this time than in his more dominant years.'
What's next: Insider reports estimate around 1.3 million pay-per-view purchases for the event. Pacquiao, who was enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame last month, was guaranteed up to $5 million, while Barrios, despite holding the title, reportedly received a base purse of up to $1 million. With Barrios retaining his title, promoters have indicated talk of a rematch and both fighters have expressed interest in another bout. No official announcement has been made regarding Pacquiao's next match or retirement plans.

Dusty Baker to Manage Nicaragua in 2026 World Baseball Classic
Nicaragua has named Dusty Baker, a World Series champion, three-time manager of the year and the eighth-winningest manager in major league history, to manage the team in next year's World Baseball Classic. The national baseball team said Baker will be on the bench when Nicaragua tries to improve on its 19th-place finish in the 2023 WBC. Baker, 76, managed for 26 years, leading five major league teams to division titles before retiring in 2023. He was a two-time All-Star and helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the 1981 World Series as a player, then managed the Houston Astros to the 2022 World Series title. Nicaragua went 3-0 in qualifying for the WBC and will play in Group D in Miami against Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands and Israel. Reporting by The Associated Press. Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.

Commanders put OL Nate Herbig on reserve/retired list
Veteran offensive lineman Nate Herbig is walking away from football. Herbig signed with the Commanders this offseason, but the team announced on Tuesday morning that he has been placed on the team's reserve/retired list. He will no longer count against the team's 90-man roster limit. Herbig spent the last two seasons with the Steelers, but did not play at all in 2024 after a rotator cuff injury. Herbig appeared in 17 games for the Steelers in 2023 and he started 11 games at guard for the Jets in 2022. The Eagles signed Herbig as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and he started 17 of the 33 games he played while with Philadelphia. Nick Allegretti and Chris Paul remain on hand as depth options at guard in Washington.
