Teacher Charged in Deaths of N.C. High School Football Players Killed in ATV Accident
A teacher has been charged in connection with the deaths of two North Carolina high school football players killed in an ATV crash last summer.
Ashley Marie Darity, 34, is charged with two counts of felony involuntary manslaughter related to the August 2024 deaths of Layne Jones and Jayden Reynaldo, the Alcohol Law Enforcement division of the state Department of Public Safety confirmed in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
Darity, who was arrested on Feb. 13, was released on a $20,000 secured bond, per court records reviewed by PEOPLE.
Jones and Reynaldo were riding a 2015 Polaris Sportsman ATV on Aug. 25, 2024, when they went around a curve and crashed the four-wheeler into a tree in Transylvania County, state authorities said, per the Transylvania Times, USA Today and NBC News. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The state Department of Public Safety said in its statement that alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash that killed the boys, who were football players at Rosman High School. According to the Transylvania Times, authorities believe the teenagers attended a house party prior to the crash.
A school district official confirmed to NBC News and USA Today that Darity was a substitute teacher in the Transylvania County Schools District from 2021 to 2023. It's unclear which school she worked for, though Rosman High School is part of the district.

Two others have also been arrested amid the investigation. Brandon Kaine Rathbone and Patricia Faye Whitehead, both of Balsam Grove, N.C., were each charged with aiding and abetting a person less than 21 years of age in the possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages, per the statement shared with PEOPLE.
The state Department of Public Safety said the charges stem from "a previous incident discovered during this investigation that occurred at the same residence."
Authorities said the investigation into the fatal crash remains ongoing.
The Transylvania County School District mourned the loss of two students in a statement shared on social media in August 2024.
'In moments like these, words often fall short,' the district said. 'Our hearts are broken, and we are grieving together as a community. The loss of such young, vibrant lives is a stark reminder of how precious life is and how deeply we are all connected.'
PEOPLE has reached out to Darity's attorney, Sean Devereux, for comment.

Former NFL Star Antonio Brown Reportedly Wanted on Attempted Murder Charge in Miami
Former NFL star Antonio Brown is reportedly wanted in Miami on an attempted murder charge stemming from a shooting in May Brown's bond is listed at $10,000, according to documents obtained by the Washington Post After the incident, Brown claimed on X that he was "jumped by multiple individuals" who wanted to steal his jewelryAuthorities in Miami have issued an arrest warrant for former NFL star Antonio Brown on a charge of attempted murder, according to documents obtained by the Washington Post. The warrant for Brown, 36, was reportedly signed by a judge on Wednesday, June 11 in Miami-Dade County, stemming from a shooting in May during a celebrity boxing match. The warrant reportedly lists a charge of attempted murder with a firearm. Brown's bond is listed at $10,000 and requires him to remain under house arrest until a pending trial, the outlet reported. Brown's agent did not immediately return PEOPLE's request for comment. The shooting happened on Saturday, May 16 around 3 a.m. local time after a boxing event hosted by streamer Adin Ross. Video footage from the evening captured by witnesses shows the retired wide receiver throwing punches during an altercation with multiple people. In one moment from the scuffle, Brown can be seen falling over alongside a security guard who he proceeded to kick. A person can be heard telling Brown that the man is a security guard in the video footage. The alleged shooting happened when Brown and others moved to an alley nearby. Video footage shows Brown running toward a group of people, holding something in his hand, seconds before a loud sound resembling gun shots is heard and the crowd fled. It is not clear who fired the shots in the video. In other angles of the incident, bystanders reacted. 'Oh my God, he has a gun,' one individual said in a clip seconds before the assumed gunshots were heard. Brown was seen in handcuffs after the incident, but Miami Police confirmed that no arrests were made that evening. According to the Washington Post, the warrant for Brown signed on Wednesday says patrons at the scene told officers the former NFL star was the one who fired the shots. The warrant also reportedly says Brown had no weapon on him when officers patted him down at the scene, but "two spent shell casings and an empty gun holster" were discovered by investigators. Brown addressed the incident on Ross' Kick livestream and on X, claiming he had been "jumped by multiple individuals" at the event and suffered from CTE. 'I got CTE, I blacked out,' he said on the stream. 'I blacked out, Adin. I don't know what happened." He added that he will consult his legal council and attorneys "on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me" and promised to keep his followers "posted step-by-step on the process."
