Eagles star Jordan Mailata shares the secret sauce that catapulted his career
Eagles star Jordan Mailata shares the secret sauce that catapulted his career Jordan Mailata spoke with the Philly media and expressed the importance of trusting Jeff Stoutland and returning a favor he was offered.
We look at NFL stars like gladiators when the truth is they're human beings just like the rest of us. They have families, wives, children, and responsibilities that extend past the game's reach. Philadelphia Eagles left tackle might be a gladiator, though. As memories of those viral rugby clips dance across our minds, it's easy to spend hours marveling at the level of left tackle he has morphed into.
He's one of the best players in the NFL at his position, but spending most of his career playing on a line that features future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees like Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson sometimes meant he was overshadowed.
The secret is out now. Jason Kelce rode off into the sunset after announcing his retirement during the 2024 NFL offseason. Mailata and the other starters stepped up. Jason's replacement, Cam Jurgens, earned a Pro Bowl mention. Jordan was rewarded for another great season by being named a Second-team All-Pro.
This week, he met with select members of the Philly media. The conversation yielded many positive takeaways.
Jordan Mailata credits trusting Jeff Stoutland for his improvement and discusses his role in mentoring young Eagles.
It's hard to believe this is the case now, but when Jordan Mailata arrived at the NovaCare Complex, he didn't even know how to put his helmet on. He was fortunate to land in the right situation, though. That's sometimes the difference between seeing guys fail or excel. Just look at what we saw from Zack Baun if you need further evidence of that theory.
Mailata's brief conversation with the media is worth a full watch, but something he said tugged at the heartstrings. He mentioned his trust in Jeff Stoutland as the secret sauce for his success and the importance he sees in mentoring the young guys on the roster.
It's an interesting dynamic, molding and helping the young guys who may one day overtake you on the depth chart. So, why do it? Jordan offered the perfect answer:
"It's the culture that I was welcomed into. Why would I shut the door? J.P. (Jason Peters)... Lane Johnson... Jason Kelce... Big V (Halapoulivaati Vaitai)... Isaac Seumalo... (Stefen) Wisniewski... Man, I could go down the list.
Chance Warmack... Those guys just welcomed me in. They brought me along, so I feel like I owe it to these rookies to bring them along."
Something tells us Jordan's job isn't in jeopardy, not for a while anyway. Still, seeing him taking on the 'big brother' role is excellent from seventh-round draft choice to rising star and mentor. It will be awesome to see where the path leads him next.

And the Emmy goes to ... Phillies star Trea Turner? Documentary on Turner's ovation wins Emmy Award
PHILADELPHIA -- And the Emmy goes to ... Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner? Turner already won an NL batting title and a World Series championship ring in his 11-year MLB career. How about adding an Emmy Award to that trophy case? 'Trea Turner's an Emmy winner, absolutely,' sports documentary producer Kyle Thrash said. 'He definitely held it up like he owned it.' Turner may not actually have the award in hand to keep for good, but he got to hoist the real deal ahead of Friday's game against Toronto in a short celebration for the Emmy won for a best sports short documentary produced on the 2023 standing ovation credited with turning around his season. 'The Turnaround' won a sports Emmy in May and Thrash and Phillies fan Jon McCann — whose personal struggles with mental health and kinship with Turner were the heart of the film — attended the game to show off their new bling to Turner. 'Cuz, we did it, huh?! 'McCann said as he shook Turner's hand on the field after batting practice. 'Trea Turner, we share an Emmy together.' Turner read the inscription at the bottom of the Emmy and promised the fans he would wave to them in section 301 if he stole a base in Friday's game. 'We get to bring a trophy back to the ballpark tonight and share it with so many people that were involved in the standing ovation. It's pretty incredible,' Thrash said. Philly sports fans — often billed as some of the worst in sports — gave a slumping Turner standing ovations in at-bats throughout the weekend in an August 2023 series to show he had their full support. Turner was in the first season of an 11-year, $300 million deal with the Phillies but was batting just .238 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was even dropped to eighth in the batting order headed into that series against Kansas City. In three games over the weekend against the Royals, Turner went 4 for 12 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs and he would eventually help lead the Phillies to the playoffs. Turner later helped pay for 'Thank You, Philly" digital billboards in the greater Philadelphia area. The documentary was produced by Higher Ground, the media company founded by former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama McCann, also known as 'The Philly Captain," is a Philadelphia based YouTuber and was one of the fans — along with a Philly sports talk radio host — credited with rallying the fans to get behind Turner. 'During the ceremony, one of the award presenters said, 'When you go up against the Olympics, you lose.' So I kind of thought we already lost,' McCann said. 'We didn't. It was a great, great shock.'

Vikings CB Isaiah Rodgers embracing fresh start and preparing for bigger role in Minnesota
Minnesota Vikings cornerback Isaiah Rodgers missed the 2023 NFL season because of a gambling suspension. Last season, he won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, Minnesota's newest cornerback is getting ready for a bigger role. "Just enjoy the process while it's here," said Rodgers at mini-camp earlier this week. "Do whatever I can do to help the team win and bring a Lombardi to Minnesota." Rodgers may not have made as many national headlines when he signed with the Vikings this offseason. But if all goes according to plan, he'll be a starting cornerback and make a big impact this fall. At least that's what Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores wants. "He just wants me to be me," said Rodgers, of Flores. "That's one of the reasons why I came here. He just wants me to go out there and use my ball skills and use my knowledge to make plays." Rodgers, 27, will be paired with pro-bowler Byron Murphy. It's only been a few weeks, but the two corners have quickly become friends. "We play the game a lot," said Rodgers. "We ask each other about film. You know, how he sees this, how I see it. We switch from boundary to field. So we're just having fun with the scheme and figuring each other out." "I'd say that's my best friend already," said Murphy. "That's my dawg. Obviously just met him when he got here. But we're already playing games online, we got 2K, all those things. He's a great guy, great teammate. But that bond's already there." And it turns out that bond and their back-and-forth competition could result in a few more Vikings turnovers. Murphy had six interceptions last year, third best in the NFL. "A lot of plays on the ball. A lot of interceptions. He dropped a lot, though, "laughed Rodgers. "He's supposed to have at least 10-plus. So, just trying to get in that stat category with him and compete." "I dropped like five or six," smiled Murphy. "I don't know the exact number, but I gotta go make up for it this year for sure." Rodgers figures to factor in the return game, too. He has one career kickoff return for a touchdown so far, which happened in 2020. Along with many other Vikings, he took reps at that spot during OTAs and minicamp. WCCO asked Rodgers if he sees that being part of his job this season. "Anything to help the team. Just having fun out here. Enjoying the process too."
