An outdoor bath? Maybe the next big thing will be outside loos

Yahoo20-06-2025
YOU MAY be used to seeing your neighbour mowing the lawn or hanging out the washing - but what about taking a bath? Coming hot on the heels of alfresco living rooms and kitchens comes outdoor baths and showers, which are gaining popularity in gardens across the country. People are immersing themselves in baths or enjoying showers installed on patios and even in the middle of lawns. Relaxing in the bath outdoors, surrounded by greenery and birdsong is thought to bring health benefits, leading to the term 'spa-den' - turning your garden into a wellbeing retreat. I just hope my neighbours don't turn their veg plots into a spa-den. I don't mind seeing them pottering about in shorts on hot summer days, with their hoes and trowels, but I'd rather they kept their bathroom routine inside the house. Why can't people enjoy their gardens for what they are? They should be bring a different experience to the one we get inside our homes, yet people seem to want to replicate it with outside living rooms, kitchens and now bathrooms. When I was growing up, on hot summer days, families brought out a few deckchairs and maybe a sun lounger. Some people, like my parents, had a garden bench and carried out the coffee table when we ate outside. Now, gardens are home to sofas larger than those in living rooms and with far more cushions. In place of rusty grills barbecues dragged out of the garage every summer come state-of-the-art outdoor kitchens with range cookers and special pizza ovens.
Many people have larger, comfier sofas outdoors than in. Picture: PA (Image: PA) So it's no surprise that the next step is to bring the bathroom outside too. But why? Jacuzzis and hot tubs are commonplace, and have been for some time, so the desire for an actual bath in the garden seems ridiculous. It's not just a hot soak - outdoor ice baths, in particular, are catching on. Ever practical, my first thought would be 'Where would you store all the ice?' I struggle to find space for anything in my chest freezer as it is. And I am assuming bathers do so in the buff. It's to be hoped that nobody in the street pops round to borrow a cup of sugar while you're having a garden soak or showering beside the flowerbeds. I enjoy a bath as much as the next person, but I'll take mine inside, thank you. Likewise with cooking and lounging about on the settee. To me, inside and outside should be different and offer contrasting experiences. I anticipate the next big thing will be a return to the outside lavatory. My nana had one in her back yard in Normanby near Middlesbrough. During the night she would use a ceramic chamber pot kept under her bed but otherwise went outside to the loo in a small brick outhouse. Let's face it, during a busy day we all love to close the bathroom door and relax on the loo for ten minutes. Alfresco toilets, where you could sit in the sun, or shade - behind the garage or under a car port, maybe - with the T&A, could be just the thing. I'm forgetting the bedroom - why not fetch that outdoors too? It wouldn't be too difficult to heft a mattress or two on to the lawn, along with some bedding. After dining in your outdoor kitchen and winding down in your outside bath, sleeping under the stars in your garden bed would be magical. And with your outside toilet you could have an en-suite. I've convinced myself now - this outdoor living malarkey is not such a bad idea after all.

Why Jack Draper stunningly left Nike for new brand before US Open

Jack Draper's rise to the top of men's tennis has seen him sport the iconic, clean look of Nike since his days as a junior up until his Wimbledon bow and historic Indian Wells Open victory. But all of that has changed last month when his Nike deal expired and not only did he switch brands, but Draper took the decision to enter the unknown as the face of Vuori's venture into tennis. Draper has been a trend-setter and has found his career entwined with fashion, notably through his deal with Burberry and a recent campaign alongside model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, while Vogue's global editor Anna Wintour is a fan. Enter Vuori and the latest opportunity for a tennis player to pursue one of the non-traditional brands of the sport, with the apparel brand based in California identifying the world No 5 as the face of their new tennis line. 'You're used to seeing yourself a certain way, and now other people are seeing you differently, too,' Draper said, with the launch off to a fine start in the controversial US Open mixed doubles and a place in the final four on Wednesday. 'That sort of makes them curious: 'What's this brand?'' Draper unveiled his new look at the US Open in the mixed doubles on Tuesday, partnering up with Jessica Pegula, and the No 1 seeds, due to their combined singles rankings, swept into the semi-finals, with victories over Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu first, then Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals. Draper will even have his own signature line in a deal that Joe Kudla, Vuori's founder and chief executive, has described as a 'fairy-tale dream.' From an athleisure brand to leading apparel for one of the best athletes in the world, Vuori appealed to Draper due to their 'creativity'. Draper explained: 'I think there's a real creative element to what they do. And I've always been someone who likes to have my own style, who likes to be my own person. It is quite an essential part of an athlete's journey, because it's our kit.' While Nike still retain some of the best players in the world, including Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, Draper's move is in line with players pushing for greater commercial flexibility and he could also pursue campaigns that are more closely aligned with his own personal brand and style, which have become so distinctive in recent years. The deal was helped by Draper's brother, Ben, who was familiar with the brand, who will offer the 23-year-old full access to designers and developers to shape his look for years to come. 'I think a lot of people, especially in the U.K. market, they don't hear a lot about them,' Draper added. 'That's the thing with Vuori. It's something different that people haven't seen before.' Draper is the latest in a trend of players leaving the swoosh, with Taylor Fritz partnering up with BOSS and Frances Tiafoe linking up with Lululemon. The landscape has changed over the last decade in tennis, with more brands breaking into the industry, including Roger Federer and his venture with On, who sponsor Ben Shelton and Iga Swiatek, following a $50m investment for a three percent equity stake in the company in 2019.

5 Tu Clothing autumn pieces to buy before they sell out, according to a shopping expert

These stylish and affordable pieces are already flying off shelves. I'll be the first to admit that I love a good supermarket brand. Whether it's stylish homeware or unexpectedly chic clothing, British high street stores like George at Asda and F&F Clothing always come through. However, when it comes to trend-driven fashion at seriously affordable prices, my favourite by far is Tu Clothing. Tu Clothing consistently delivers on both style and price, and I'm all about shopping smarter. After all, why pay three times the price for something almost identical elsewhere? That just leaves you with more to spend on the things that really matter. And that doesn't mean Tu Clothing skimps on quality either. Case in point: a pair of £18 sandals I've lived in this summer could easily pass for designer (we're talking £300 vibes). And don't even get me started on my go-to denim joggers from the brand - I've worn them almost every week. Jeans that feel like joggers? Genius. I will never stop raving about them (they've just released a new pair here). Browse new-in Tu Clothing Browse Tu's denim collection So, you can imagine how excited I was when Tu Clothing dropped their new denim collection, along with some super on-trend 2025 autumn pieces. I was first to the checkout and had everything delivered ASAP so I could report back on what's actually worth buying (spoiler: nothing disappointed). Here are the fashionable finds I think you'll be glad you snapped up - and I have a feeling some of them are going to sell out quickly. ✨ Indigo Denim Midaxi Dress, £28 ✨ Shop now Do I need another denim dress? Absolutely not. However, a denim dress is my go-to when I don't know what else to wear but still want to look cool and effortless. This one really does tick all the boxes, from its midi length to the half button-up design (the fewer buttons, the better in my eyes) and the coordinating belt that lets you cinch in your waist as much or as little as you like. It's also a bargain £28! A similar design I had my eye on at Whistles is a whopping £149 and the Tu Clothing design seems even better, as it has thoughtful features like the side pockets, back pockets (yes, you can never have too many pockets), and a slit that makes it easy to move. It also gets a massive plus for being made from super-stretchy denim, it's not stiff at all and feels soft on the skin. It's already selling out in sizes, and I think it'll definitely be one of the first items to go. Honestly, I can't think of a single reason you'd regret buying it. ✨ Mid Denim Studded Relaxed Straight Leg Jeans, £26 ✨ Shop the blouse Shop the jeans If you really want to upgrade your jeans this autumn, an on-trend addition is a pair of studded jeans. Now, this is actually way more chic than you might think. What I loved about these is the straight-leg design, which is super relaxed and versatile. I went for the regular length (I'm 5'5'), but they also come in short and long options. The mid-wash is the perfect shade of denim, and the stud detailing makes them look incredibly expensive while adding that extra something to your outfits. A very similar pair by a high-end brand retails for over £200, so these are a real bargain! They also haven't skimped on the studs, they run down the seams and over the pockets, giving them a luxe feel. They're also made from 99% cotton (yes, really, at that price), which makes them soft, stretchy, and honestly, you don't even feel like you're wearing jeans. Absolute 10/10. I paired them with a brand-new blouse, also from Tu Clothing, which is a total showstopper with its floral embroidery and blouson sleeves (£22.50 and selling out fast - it also comes in navy). While I finished the look with a simple pair of silver pumps for a more casual vibe, these jeans will no doubt come in handy over the festive period too - just add some sequin accessories and a silver top for a casual, party-ready outfit. ✨ Denim Waist Panel Midaxi Skirt, £22.50 ✨ Shop the cardigan Shop the skirt Finally, denim midi skirts have been making a major fashion comeback over the past few years. While the trend immediately reminded me of my mum and her Per Una denim skirt in the '90s, I've slowly come around to the idea of trying one myself, although I struggled to find a style that felt flattering and didn't look frumpy. So, when I saw this drop-hem skirt (another big silhouette trend for autumn 2025), it felt like I'd finally found a winner, especially since a similar style at Boden is £99 and almost sold out in every size. I just love the shape this skirt gives me and it's super swishy and elegant to wear, thanks to the full pleated skirt. A denim skirt also has serious styling versatility - you can wear it with boots, trainers, blazers, tucked-in knits and more - the outfit options are endless. It's definitely a worthy addition to your wardrobe and is bound to pay for itself in cost-per-wear in no time. I paired it with Tu's Soft Knit Crew Neck Cardigan in a very on-trend deep burgundy hue. It's only £18 and also comes in grey, beige, and pink. The fabric is super soft, making it a great layering piece for autumn. Plus, you wear it buttoned up or left open over a T-shirt for a more casual look. 🛍️ More denim styles from Tu Clothing 🛍️
