Gareth Southgate ‘enjoying life' and not actively seeking management return

It is 13 months since the former defender called time on his successful eight-year stint as national team boss in the wake of their Euro 2024 final defeat by Spain in Berlin.
Southgate led England to back-to-back European Championship finals, as well as runs to the World Cup semi-finals and quarter-finals, after stepping up from the under-21s role in 2016.
The 54-year-old suggested during his time out of the game that his next job could be away from football and says he is in no rush to return to the dugout.
'I'm enjoying my life,' Southgate told the PA news agency. 'I've got quite a lot on.
'I'm in the middle of writing a book, I've got several business interests. I do some work on leadership, help with some young coaches.
'But I've also got time to travel and play a bit of golf, play a bit of paddle tennis, so yeah, I'm very much enjoying that balance.'
Asked whether he is looking at returning to management or if the future lies in something else, Southgate said: 'You can't say never to anything because 15 years ago I left Middlesbrough and I wasn't certain I would manage then.
'Then I ended up on a strange path into managing the national team. But it's not something I'm actively looking at at the moment.'
Southgate's sojourn meant eyebrows were raised when speculation emanated from Poland in June that his return to management could be with their national team.
'I am kind of used to it,' he said of the rumours about him. 'I mean, I was linked with the Poland job, which I knew nothing about, so that was a strange one.
'Something gets written and then it's reported everywhere, but yeah, there's probably a lot of others, but I kind of accept it now for what it is.'
Southgate was speaking at the PFA Awards in Manchester, where he picked the PFA Merit Award recognising his contributions to football and achievements with England.
Thomas Tuchel is looking to build on those foundations and lead the team to glory at next summer's World Cup and was another in attendance at the event at the Manchester Opera House.
'I think they've obviously got lots of good players,' Southgate said of the current England side. 'There is, as always, some exciting young players coming through.
'It's important for me not to say too much more than that, really, because I don't want to step on Thomas' toes at all.'

Women's Rugby World Cup: England's Megan Jones on dealing with grief

Jones, whose dad Simon and mum Paula both died between August and December last year, is appearing at her first World Cup since 2017 and heads into this tournament as England vice-captain. The 28-year-old centre has been named in the starting 15 for the Red Roses' tournament opener against the United States at the Stadium of Light and, ahead of Friday's game, shared her experiences of dealing with grief. A post shared by Megan Jones (@thanksmeg) Jones said: 'I think grief works in different ways. Those that have experienced grief, sometimes you're not always sad, sometimes you're happy and sometimes it doesn't hit you like that. 'It might hit me later or it might hit me in the moment. 'As soon as I step on that pitch, that's all I think about is rugby. That's probably one of my strengths, I don't tend to think too far beyond that. I never really thought of my mum and dad when they were out supporting. 'I've always led with my heart, I'll always be passionate about what I do and that means now a little bit more firepower, I guess, behind me with my mum and dad. 'It's going to be special. Last World Cup my dad was with me in 2017, that was lovely and beautiful. 'It's just going to be another special occasion. It's going to be a lot of firsts, it's still only been a year since my dad hasn't been here. 'It's just a lot of emotions all in one, but they all come in different ways for sure.' England begin the tournament in Sunderland against the USA, who are ranked 10th in the world. USA head coach Sione Fukofuka has named 11 World Cup debutants in the matchday squad, including four in the starting 15. A post shared by Ilona Maher (@ilonamaher) Ilona Maher – the world's most popular rugby player on social media with over eight million followers across her accounts – is one of those making her tournament bow and she lines up at 13 opposite Jones. Asked what it is like coming up against Maher, Jones said: 'I think physics would show that she's probably got a couple of inches on me and a couple of pounds as well. 'I think I've always lived by, it's not the size of the dog, it's the size of the fight in the dog. 'No matter who I come up against, no matter how many followers they've got – she'll be thinking the same – it's how you perform on the pitch, which is the most important bit. 'I always lead with passion and pride. That's what I'll continue to do in whatever game we go against and whoever we go against.'

Arsenal set to hijack Tottenham's move for Crystal Palace forward Eberechi Eze

As late as Tuesday Spurs appeared to be in the driving seat for the forward, with talks progressing over a deal for the 27-year-old. However, the PA news agency understands the Gunners are now exploring a move, with reports suggesting the England international prefers a switch to Mikel Arteta's side. Their interest has accelerated after Havertz was forced off in Sunday's victory over Manchester United, although sources insist it is still too early to give a prognosis on the Germany international. Eze, whose £68million release clause expired on Friday, played 84 minutes of the weekend draw at Chelsea and trained on Wednesday ahead of Palace's Conference League play-off at home to Fredrikstad, with head coach Oliver Glasner insisting he and captain Marc Guehi, a target for Liverpool, would start the European tie. 'Before Chelsea I think many of you were surprised that Marc and Ebs started and played almost the whole game,' he said. 'Most of you will be surprised that they will start again tomorrow because of all the rumours. But again, they are committed.' Eze was released by Arsenal as a 13-year-old.

England coach John Mitchell: Being World Cup favourites is irrelevant to us

The Red Roses kick off this year's World Cup at the Stadium of Light against the United States on Friday and also face Samoa and Australia in Pool A. England enter the tournament ranked number one in the world, but head coach Mitchell believes talk of being favourites is 'irrelevant'. When asked what challenges that title presents, Mitchell replied: 'It doesn't really matter. We start the tournament equal like everyone else. 'Being favourites is irrelevant to us. It might be relevant to your section of the world. We've just got to be where our feet are and earn the right each week.' England are currently on a 27-game winning run and recorded warm-up victories against Spain and France earlier this month. Friday's opponents the USA are ranked 10th in the world and Mitchell believes that while his side are likely to be 'hunted' by teams during the tournament, they are ready to embrace that. 'It's really important to basically focus on ourselves,' he said. 'We understand their threats – it's not that we don't look at their threats – but ultimately at the end of the day it's really important to focus on what we do and how we improve our margins, make sure that we perform above our standards. 'I'm sure if we take care of that, then that will take care of the threats. 'Every team will rise 10 or 15 per cent in this tournament because they're playing against England, that's just what we expect. 'From that point of view, we realise we're hunted but we also look forward to that as well.' Mitchell has named the same starting 15 from the 40-6 warm-up victory over France for the opening game. Skipper Zoe Aldcroft leads the squad at blindside flanker, with number eight Alex Matthews and openside Sadia Kabeya alongside her in the back row and Abbie Ward and Morwenna Talling lining up in the second row. Hannah Botterman, Amy Cokayne and Maud Muir complete the forwards. Here we go 🌹 John Mitchell has named his Red Roses to face the USA in our #RWC2025 opener 👇#WearTheRose | #RedRoses — Red Roses (@RedRosesRugby) August 20, 2025 Vice-captain Megan Jones continues at centre alongside Tatyana Heard, while Jess Breach, Abby Dow and Ellie Kildunne make up the back three, Natasha Hunt starts at scrum-half and Zoe Harrison is at fly-half. World Cup debutants Kelsey Clifford, Maddie Feaunati and Emma Sing are named as replacements and veteran Emily Scarratt is also on the bench. Speaking about team selection, Mitchell added: 'Ultimately, we've tried to build cohesion. We've come out of a pre-season, we're not like the Southern Hemisphere teams which have had a lot of rugby. 'We're just building, so it's really important to make sure that you create combinations that players are familiar with. 'We do have history together in the squad that's selected, a number of minutes over the last three years – I think something like 1200 caps amongst that group of girls. 'That's a lot of experience and a lot of belief. You've got to play those cards in a tournament like this.'
