No confidence motion in KSCARD Bank passed, but declaration of results put on hold

The Hindu24-04-2025

The motion of no confidence moved by a section of members against a director board of the United Democratic Front (UDF)-governed Kerala State Co-operative Agricultural and Rural Development (KSCARD) Bank was passed 40-37 on Thursday.
However, the declaration of results or any further action will be subject to the Kerala High Court verdict on a case regarding the validity of Rule 43C recently added by the State government to the Kerala Cooperative Societies Rules providing for 'motion of no confidence' against managing committees of cooperative societies and banks by the general body.
Conveyed objections
The director board has, meanwhile, conveyed their objections to the court regarding the votes cast by the representatives of the Kattakada and Vadakara co-operative agricultural and rural development banks, bank president C.K. Shajimohan said.
Earlier this week, the director board of the bank had accused the State government of aiding the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] attempts to wrest control of the UDF-governed bank.
The director board, which has a UDF majority, has maintained that neither the Cooperative Societies Act nor the bylaw of the KSCARD Bank provides for no confidence motion. The bylaw clearly says that an elected committee stays in power for five years.

Nilambur: Parties protest outside various offices following electrocution of Class X student by wild boar trap

MALAPPURAM: Nilambur witnessed a wave of protests on Monday, following the electrocution of a Class X student, Ananthu. Various parties held marches targeting different government offices, each placing blame on separate authorities for the incident. The CPM staged a protest in front of the Vazhikadavu panchayat office. Politburo member A Vijayaraghavan, who led the march, accused the UDF-led panchayat administration of failing to act against the threat posed by wild boars. 'Panchayats are empowered to cull dangerous wild boars, but the Vazhikadavu panchayat has done nothing on that front. Now, the UDF is trying to politicise Ananthu's death in the name of the Nilambur by-election,' Vijayaraghavan said. Meanwhile, the UDF took out a march to the KSEB office in Nilambur. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan, who led the protest, criticised the CPM for targeting the panchayat instead of the KSEB, which he said bore actual responsibility. The BJP also took to the streets, marching to the forest department office.

TMC slams BJP over ‘sindoor-selling' remark

1 2 Kolkata: TMC targeted BJP 's state leadership on Monday over alleged derogatory remarks about women and the freezing of central funds. The criticism came at a press conference after leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari's comments about sindoor and bangles at a Sandeshkhali rally on Sunday. "Yesterday, Adhikari spoke about Lakshmir Bhandar and said that women shouldn't sell their sindoor and bangles at Rs 500-1,000," said state minister Shashi Panja. "Lakshmir Bhandar is a universal scheme for each and every woman of Bengal, unlike the exclusionary schemes in BJP-governed states," she added and went on to say: "They (BJP) are in office in a lot of states. Why doesn't Adhikari ask those govts to extend benefits and give Rs 3,000 to every woman?" The netas slammed other BJP seniors' misogynist comments, including remarks of Union minister Sukanta Majumdar and former state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh about CM Mamata Banerjee. On central funds, MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said: "Over Rs 1.75 lakh crore of Bengal's funds have been wilfully blocked by Centre." Netas also spoke of BJP's "manipulation" in the Sandeshkhali incident. "They cheated the women of Sandeshkhali by making them sign on blank papers, using those later to file fake complaints," Panja claimed. tnn

LDF, UDF continue blame game over boy's tragic death

The tragic electrocution of 15-year-old Ananthu from an illegal electric trap set for wild boars at Vazhikkadavu dominated the Nilambur Assembly byelection campaign for the second consecutive day on Monday with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) taking out protest marches to different centres. In a bid to gain political mileage from the tragedy, both of them blamed each other for the tragic accident. The LDF staged a protest outside the Vazhikkadavu panchayat office, while the UDF organised a march to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) office at Vazhikkadavu, each trying to pin the responsibility on the other. The UDF pointed fingers at the KSEB, arguing that it was its responsibility to prevent power theft for illegal activities such as electric trapping of wild boars. The LDF countered that the onus lay with the local body. The blame game intensified with the UDF targeting the LDF-led State government and its agencies while the LDF targeted the UDF-ruled local body. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member A. Vijayaraghavan, inaugurating the LDF march, attributed the incident to the failure of the Vazhikkadavu panchayat administration, stating that it had not implemented the existing protocol to cull wild animals causing crop damage. Mr. Vijayaraghavan accused the panchayat of colluding with those involved in illegally hunting wild boars. He said the UDF's efforts to make political capital out of the tragedy had boomeranged. K. Radhakrishnan, MP, CPI leader Satyan Mokeri, Alice Mathew, M.M. Varghese, V.P. Sanu, E. Jayan, T.M. Siddique, Jamsheer K., and M.T. Ali spoke. Inaugurating the UDF march, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said the incident exposed the negligence of government departments. 'Ananthu's family and several other local residents had complained to the KSEB and the Forest department about the electricity theft for hunting wild animals, but no action was taken. It is a clear case of government negligence,' he said. Mr. Satheesan lashed out at the government for its inaction. 'The LDF's march to the panchayat office is a farce. The government does not provide funds for culling wild boars. Instead of blaming the panchayat, the LDF should protest outside the offices of the Forest and Electricity Ministers,' he said. UDF panchayat chairman Saidalavi Valassery presided over the function. A.K.M. Ashraf, Anvar Sadath, MLAs, Congress district president V.S. Joy and Muslim League leader K.M. Shaji spoke.
