New Delhi: Delhi's Ranji cricket coach, Sarandeep Singh, expressed surprise at Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket, contrasting it with his expectations following Kohli's recent Ranji Trophy participation. Kohli's Test career concluded after 123 matches, leaving him just short of 10,000 runs. He retires as India's fourth highest Test run-scorer.
On JioCinema, Singh stated that Virat Kohli's announcement regarding his departure surprised him, despite recent speculation. 'This morning when I heard this news that Virat Kohli has announced his retirement. This was a big surprise for me,' explained Singh. 'And as far as we were talking about the Delhi Ranji Trophy, the way he was playing the matches, 4-5 days before that, we started talking to him about the matches he wants to play. He showed his involvement.'
According to Singh, Kohli's subdued performance in Australia created pressure, suggesting increased motivation for the upcoming England tour in June and July.
'The way he started his preparation for the red ball, he was talking about how the Australia tour would have been, but he was preparing for the England tour, how we would win the Test match. But suddenly, now we see that the person who was ready to go to England will not be going to England. That announcement that has been made today, I think everyone is shocked,' explained the Delhi coach.
'I didn't even get to hear it from him. I was talking to him a few days ago, I was talking to him on messages, but I didn't get any such intention that he is thinking about something like this,' explained Singh. 'And the way he is going to the IPL, he is making runs and is in great form.'
Kohli's intense training regimen, which included participation in India A's tour matches, suggests he was meticulously preparing for the upcoming England tour, commencing June 20th in Leeds. Singh highlighted this focused preparation.
'I had asked him if he would play county cricket after this. He said, no, brother, I want to play matches for India A. He said he would play two matches for India A, and then I will prepare for the Test match. He said he wants to score 3-4 hundreds, just like the 2018 tour,' explained Singh. 'So he was planning to play for India A. But suddenly, I heard that he was not playing. This is surprising.'
Virat Kohli will focus solely on One Day International (ODI) cricket for India, following his 2024 T20I retirement announcement. Prior to that, he will prioritize leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore in their pursuit of an IPL championship.

(Pic credit: BCCI) NEW DELHI: Sarfaraz Khan continued his strong form in England with a blazing century for India A against the main Indian Test squad on Day 2 of the ongoing intra-squad warm-up game in Beckenham on Saturday. While the 27-year-old dazzled with a 76-ball 101, Jasprit Bumrah endured a quiet outing, finishing wicketless in his seven-over spell. India A ended Day 2 at 299/6 in reply to India's 459, with Ishan Kishan unbeaten on 45 and Shardul Thakur on 19. The highlight of the day, however, was Sarfaraz's explosive ton, laced with 15 fours and two sixes. He was eventually retired out to allow others a hit in the middle — a tactical call that didn't diminish the impact of his knock. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Domestic season to kick off on August 28; Duleep Trophy back to zonal format

The 2025-26 domestic cricket season will kick off with the Duleep Trophy, starting August 28, and end with the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy on April 3. The schedule for the upcoming season was announced via a press release after the BCCI's 28th Apex Council meeting on Saturday. The Ranji Trophy is slated to be held from October 15 to February 28. Like last season, the league stage of India's premier First Class competition will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held from October 15 to November 19 while the second phase will involve two rounds from January 22 to February 1. The knockouts will begin on February 6. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy - the T20 and 50-over competitions respectively - will be played during the Ranji break. Among the key decisions taken at the meeting was a return to the zonal format for the Duleep Trophy. In the 2024-25 season, the tournament was played between four teams, named India A, India B, India C and India D, picked by the national selectors. This year, it will again be contested among the six zones – North, South, West, East, Central and North East. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will now include a Super League stage instead of the knockouts. The Super League stage will feature two groups of four teams each based on standings at the end of the league phase. The group toppers will directly contest the final. Meanwhile, the itinerary for New Zealand's white-ball tour of India in January 2026 was also confirmed. The Black Caps will play three ODIs and five T20Is from January 11 to 31. Following the stampede in Bengaluru after Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory that led to 11 deaths, the BCCI has also decided to 'constitute a committee to formulate comprehensive guidelines aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future'. BCCI office-bearers Devajit Saikia, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and Rajeev Shukla are part of the committee expected to prepare the guidelines within 15 days.
