Dean Henderson's secret penalty cheat sheet revealed before Palace keeper's shootout heroics against Liverpool

DEAN HENDERSON had a secret penalty cheat sheet as he became Crystal Palace's hero in the Community Shield against Liverpool. A thrilling game saw the Eagles draw 2-2 in regulation time against Premier League champions Liverpool, despite twice going behind. 5 Dean Henderson was the Crystal Palace penalty hero at Wembley once again Credit: Reuters 5 He saved Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott's penalties in the shootout Credit: AP 5 But his secret weapon was revealed to be a cheat sheet in his water bottle 5 Henderson had the sheet wrapped in a towel 5 And he joked after the game that he was sure it will be found later on Credit: PA It meant the Wembley showdown had to be decided by a penalty shootout for the third season running. And Palace managed to follow the example of Manchester City and Arsenal in the two previous editions by winning the game on penalties, making history with their first-ever Shield win. They were carried to that by Henderson, who saved the penalty kicks of Alexis Mac Allister - hilariously doffing his cap after doing so - and Harvey Elliott, before Justin Devenny scored the winner for the South London club. But Henderson's penalty-saving secret accompanied him on his water bottle, which he was seen checking live on TNT Sports after he unwrapped it from a towel. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL JOTA REMEMBERED Liverpool and Palace's emotional Jota tribute cut short after crowd shouts Speaking to TNT Sports about his starring shootout display, the former Manchester United star said: "Yeah I love the big moments. "I love being in that pressure moment and I really enjoyed that today. "The preparation we did for the penalties was great. So thanks to everyone behind the scenes who helped me with that." Asked about his towel-covered bottle cheat sheet after the game, he added: "Maybe, maybe. I'm sure you'll find it." BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK It is not the first time the 28-year-old has been at the centre of penalty heroics for Oliver Glasner's side. In the FA Cup final against Manchester City, Henderson managed to save an Omar Marmoush spot-kick to ensure that Eberechi Eze's strike after 16 minutes was the match-winner. Furious Pep Guardiola and Dean Henderson clash on pitch after Crystal Palace's FA Cup triumph In an interview to BBC Sport after that game, he had said: "To be fair, [Erling] Haaland might have stepped [up], I wasn't sure which way he'd go. "He gave it to Marmoush, I knew which way he was going. I knew I'd save it." Following the FA Cup final, the goalkeeper had been seen in an argument with Pep Guardiola, though he avoided any such controversy with Reds boss Arne Slot this time around. Henderson joined Palace in 2023 from Man Utd and has gone on to play 65 times for the Selhurst Park outfit. While Henderson had access to his cheat sheet, Lioness hero Hannah Hampton revealed earlier this week how she had chucked the bottle of Spanish goalkeeper Cata Coll into the crowd to deny her access to the knowledge it possessed. She explained on talkSPORT: "The Spanish keeper had it on her bottle. "So I thought when she was going in goal I'll just pick it up and throw it into the English fans so she can't have it. "I never put it on a bottle because anyone can do that, so that's why I put it on my arm. "It wasn't hard, when she's in the goal it's on its own isn't it? You just pick it up? "When she saw my bottle in there instead, mine's blank but it has the same sponsors and stuff so I just put mine in there, chucked hers in with the fans and she had an empty bottle. "She was walking back and I was walking the other way and she was so confused, I was trying so hard not to burst out laughing!" The cheeky bit of gamesmanship paid dividends as England won the Euros for the second time running, to beat the world champions in Switzerland.

Slot fires warning over title defence after Liverpool backline struggles at Wembley

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot accepts his team must tighten up defensively if they are to stand a chance of retaining their Premier League title. Despite twice taking the lead in the Community Shield, sloppy defensive play through the middle allowed Crystal Palace to equalise both times and that led to penalties, which the Eagles won 3-2. Questions have already been raised over whether Slot needs to bring in another centre-back - they have been linked with Palace's Marc Guehi, who is in the final year of his contract - as the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen has left him with just three in that position with Joe Gomez injured. Liverpool have not kept a clean sheet in pre-season, conceding 10 times in five senior games - including four against AC Milan - and Slot knows it is an area that needs attention. "It's a bit mixed feelings. If you look at our attacking play against a team who is so compact, it is maybe a bit better than last season," Slot told TNT Sports. "But on the other hand we conceded two goals, which we did against Bilbao and two more against Milan and that's something we need to do better. "I think we are able to create more now but we are conceding more at the moment and if you want to compete to win the league, one of the things is not to concede chances, let alone goals." Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson enjoyed his moment in the spotlight, saving two penalties in the shootout. Liverpool's new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong both scored but were pegged back each time by goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr. Mohamed Salah missed his second penalty in a week as one of three failures from the spot in the shootout and Justin Devenny scored Palace's fifth. "I love the big moments," Henderson said. "I love being in that pressure moment. The homework we did on penalties was great. "They have unbelievable players and have a great team, but two trophies in three months is incredible. "These emotions are fantastic. With them 2-1 up you think we are out the game. The manager said we'd get chances and we did."

Shield goes to plucky Palace as Liverpool pay penalty

Liverpool 2-2 Crystal Palace (Palace win 3-2 on pens) Dean Henderson saved two penalties as Crystal Palace fought back against Liverpool to win the Community Shield in a shootout after a 2-2 draw at Wembley. Henderson kept out spot-kicks from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott, after Mohamed Salah had missed the Reds' first, as the Eagles added more silverware to their collection, having secured their first major trophy with FA Cup glory in May. Liverpool summer signing Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring on his competitive debut in the fourth minute, assisted by another new addition, Florian Wirtz, before Jean-Philippe Mateta drew the sides level with a 17th-minute penalty. Arne Slot's Premier League champions restored their lead four minutes later through another debutant, Jeremie Frimpong, before Ismaila Sarr's 77th-minute equaliser forced penalties. Justin Devenny wrapped up a 3-2 victory for the Eagles in the dramatic shootout. Tributes, including a wreath-laying and standing ovation, were paid before kick-off to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash in Spain on July 3. The minute's silence had to be cut short due to some shouting from a small number of Palace fans. Liverpool took the lead just as the smoke was settling from the red flares lit by Palace fans, who also displayed a banner reading 'UEFA mafia' – a nod to their demotion to the Conference League over multi-ownership rules. Slot's new additions introduced themselves brilliantly as Milos Kerkez and Wirtz progressed up the pitch before the latter found Ekitike, who laid a neat pass back to Wirtz at the corner of the 18-yard box. The Germany international then provided a short pass along the edge of the area for Ekitike, who struck past a diving Henderson into the bottom-right corner. But the lead did not last long as Virgil van Dijk brought down Sarr and referee Chris Kavanagh had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Mateta missed a penalty in the FA Cup final but would not be denied here, sending Alisson the wrong way as he fired into the bottom corner. Frimpong's own account-opener for his new club seemed to be intended as a cross from the right, but instead looped over Henderson's fingertips and in, as Liverpool swiftly restored their advantage. The ball hit the net just before the clock struck 20 minutes and 20 seconds – a fitting moment to honour Jota, who wore number 20. Ekitike missed two chances at the beginning of the second half, and momentum-building Palace had not been entirely devoid of opportunities of their own, going close when Eberechi Eze forced Alisson into a save on the hour. Sarr then levelled, latching onto a lovely pass from Adam Wharton before hitting the equaliser off the inside of the post. Palace appealed for a penalty after Sarr and Mac Allister both challenged for a ball in the air, but, after Kavanagh turned to VAR, it was deemed no handball by the Argentinian, and the game ended in stalemate. Salah struck over the bar to open the shootout, before Mateta fired low past Alisson and then Henderson, who also made a critical save in the cup final shootout, denied Mac Allister to put Palace in the ascendancy. Eze's effort was saved before Cody Gakpo and Sarr both got the job done, but new Palace signing Borna Sosa hit the bar and Dominik Szoboszlai kept Liverpool alive before up stepped substitute Devenny, who struck a bullet past Alisson to seal Palace's win.
