Content: Birmingham Phoenix captain Liam Livingstone on BBC Two: "That innings was nice, we needed it! It has been a bit of a disappointing start to the tournament so we certainly needed a result. It is kind of nice to lead from the front, hopefully that gives the boys a bit of momentum and confidence.
"I was trying to be there at the end. Something I haven't done a lot of in my career is be there to walk off having won the game, so it was in the back of my mind. We still needed to take some risks and I felt the longer boundary was an easier hit for some reason today. I don't know why, it just felt like it was more into my arc.
"I don't know why Tom [Curran] decided to spray me when he got Jacob [Bethell]. I have no idea why. He is one of my good friends, I've played Lions cricket with him for so long, and he called me a 'fat slob' or something.
"The win is massive. There is no hiding in this competition. If you lose a couple of games, you can be up against it. Hopefully this gives us a bit of confidence going forward, but we are still right up against it."

Content: Oval Invincibles' opening bowler Jason Behrendorff went for a tidy 0-14 from his 15 balls, but didn't return after the 20th ball.
I didn't spot him go off the field - it's possible he did - but I'm surprised he didn't get to complete his allocation if he stayed on.

Content: Birmingham Phoenix's Will Smeed on BBC Two: "That was incredible. It was nice to come out on the right side of a close game. Hopefully everyone in the ground enjoyed watching that and hopefully that is the start of a successful competition for us as well.
"I felt like I was ready to walk off after the first 10 balls to be fair, I just couldn't hit the ball at all but I just stuck in there. [Liam] Livingstone at the end, that was ridiculous! That is just what he does and that is why he is playing around the world and doing the stuff he has done. It was insane to watch. There's not many people that can do what he has done today.
"I wasn't nervous at the end, I always back the boys. When you need three runs off the last five balls, you back yourself. It was great to come out on the right side today."

Friday briefing: Rooney hits back at Brady and Newcastle chase Ramsey
Rooney hits back Wayne Rooney claims Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady's criticism of him during his spell as the club's manager was 'very unfair'. Rooney, sacked by Birmingham in January 2024 after less than three months in charge, said he was 'really disappointed with the comment' on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, which launches on Friday. NFL great Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' during a documentary after visiting Blues' training ground the following November. Speaking via his new show on the BBC, the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well. 'But what he does understand is – he's a hard worker – we know that.' Rooney added: 'Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.' Men on the move Jacob Ramsey is set to join Newcastle (Zac Goodwin/PA) Newcastle have agreed a fee for Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey. The 24-year-old is due to travel to the north east for a medical after a deal in the region of £40million was agreed, the PA news agency understands. The prospective sale of Ramsey, who has made 167 appearances at Villa Park, will represent pure profit for Villa, who are walking a UEFA financial fair play and PSR tightrope and need to sell. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have agreed a £30million fee for Manchester City's James McAtee and a club-record £37m deal for Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson. Kick It Out want action We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat. Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous… — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 14, 2025 Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out says players may think twice about taking penalties in future after Tottenham's Mathys Tel received online racist abuse. France Under-21 international Tel is the latest player to be targeted on social media after he missed a spot kick in Wednesday night's UEFA Super League penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain. A Kick It Out statement read: 'If you're a black player, it would be totally understandable to think, 'Why would I want to take a penalty?' That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new. 'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. Accountability from offenders and social media companies is a baseline, but it's not being met.' What's on today The 25/26 Premier league season awaits ⌛️ — Liverpool FC (@LFC) August 14, 2025 The Premier League returns with champions Liverpool kicking off the new campaign against Bournemouth. It is sure to be an emotional night at Anfield as the club pay tribute to Diogo Jota following the forward's tragic death in the summer. A host of managers will face the media, with Pep Guardiola, Ruben Amorim, Thomas Frank and Enzo Maresca among those speaking.

Nottingham Forest working on potential club-record Omari Hutchinson deal
Nottingham Forest are pushing to sign Omari Hutchinson in a potential club-record deal worth about £37m. Forest, who are also closing on a £30m move for James McAtee from Manchester City, are confident of beating rivals to the signing of the Ipswich winger. Hutchinson expressed his desire to return to the Premier League to the Ipswich manager, Kieran McKenna, after relegation last season and has not featured this campaign. A release clause of about £35m is thought to have lapsed. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Forest and Brentford have had bids for Hutchinson rejected but the former are now optimistic about adding the 21-year-old, who has also been the subject of interest from Everton, to their squad. Forest made Dan Ndoye their record buy last month by signing the Switzerland winger from Bologna for £35m to replace Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle in a £55m deal, but are ready to eclipse that fee. Forest are also pursuing deals for Douglas Luiz, who is keen to return to the Premier League from Juventus, the Rennes striker Arnaud Kalimuendo and McAtee, with the England Under-21s midfielder poised for a medical in the coming days. Forest are among the clubs to have tracked Southampton's Mateus Fernandes but the Championship club want about £40m for the Portuguese midfielder. Chelsea are poised to profit from Hutchinson moving on, after they inserted a clause in the £20m deal that took him to Ipswich last year entitling them to 25% of any profit from a future sale. Hutchinson, who returned to his boyhood club, Chelsea, from Arsenal in 2022, was one of Ipswich's best performers last season but scored only three top-flight goals.

The four One-Day Cup breakout stars pushing for an England call: A flame-haired record-breaker, Mushtaq Ahmed's young protege, a Harry Brook-Ben Stokes hybrid and the Bazball archetype
With England set to rest captain Harry Brook and other senior figures like Joe Root ahead of the Ashes, next month's three-match one-day series in Ireland offers opportunities for younger players to be blooded. It was a similar scenario against the Irish two Septembers ago when England's director of cricket Rob Key and his fellow selectors delved beneath the surface and into a talent pool that included debutants Jamie Smith and Tom Hartley.
