Friday briefing: Rooney hits back at Brady and Newcastle chase Ramsey

Rooney hits back
Wayne Rooney claims Birmingham minority owner Tom Brady's criticism of him during his spell as the club's manager was 'very unfair'.
Rooney, sacked by Birmingham in January 2024 after less than three months in charge, said he was 'really disappointed with the comment' on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, which launches on Friday.
NFL great Brady, who became a minority shareholder at Birmingham in August 2023, said he was 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' during a documentary after visiting Blues' training ground the following November.
Speaking via his new show on the BBC, the ex-Everton and Manchester United striker said: 'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well.
'But what he does understand is – he's a hard worker – we know that.'
Rooney added: 'Football is not NFL – NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.'
Men on the move
Jacob Ramsey is set to join Newcastle (Zac Goodwin/PA)
Newcastle have agreed a fee for Aston Villa winger Jacob Ramsey.
The 24-year-old is due to travel to the north east for a medical after a deal in the region of £40million was agreed, the PA news agency understands.
The prospective sale of Ramsey, who has made 167 appearances at Villa Park, will represent pure profit for Villa, who are walking a UEFA financial fair play and PSR tightrope and need to sell.
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest have agreed a £30million fee for Manchester City's James McAtee and a club-record £37m deal for Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson.
Kick It Out want action
We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night's UEFA Super Cup defeat.
Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous… pic.twitter.com/rOF1WYeos4

Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out says players may think twice about taking penalties in future after Tottenham's Mathys Tel received online racist abuse.
France Under-21 international Tel is the latest player to be targeted on social media after he missed a spot kick in Wednesday night's UEFA Super League penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris St Germain.
A Kick It Out statement read: 'If you're a black player, it would be totally understandable to think, 'Why would I want to take a penalty?' That's the state of the game right now, and the sad fact is, it's nothing new.
'Players are routinely targeted with racism online and want action; we want action, too. Accountability from offenders and social media companies is a baseline, but it's not being met.'

The Premier League returns with champions Liverpool kicking off the new campaign against Bournemouth.
It is sure to be an emotional night at Anfield as the club pay tribute to Diogo Jota following the forward's tragic death in the summer.
A host of managers will face the media, with Pep Guardiola, Ruben Amorim, Thomas Frank and Enzo Maresca among those speaking.

Is the Super Bowl heading to London? British ambassador to US reveals 'big pitch' for NFL showpiece

A Super Bowl not being played on American soil has never felt more likely with the NFL's international expansion of regular season games, with London making a strong case through British ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson. London's Wembley Stadium has hosted regular-season NFL games for a decade, with it always being mentioned for the loftiest of the league's expansion goals for an actual franchise. While Mexico City, Toronto, and Munich would also love to be in the race to host arguably the biggest annual game on the world's sporting calendar, Mandelson's case gives England's capital city a possible leg up. 'I've made a big pitch for the first Super Bowl outside the US to take place in Britain,' he told the Chicago Council on Global Affairs on Thursday, per The Times. Mandelson's assertion came as he asked if there were any workers from the NFL in the audience. 'I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don't care when it takes place but I want it announced while I'm ambassador. We love it, we love it.' Mandelson has only served as the ambassador since February, taking the role under President Donald Trump less than a month after the American took back the White House. The earliest London could host the Super Bowl would be 2029, as the sites of the next three editions have already been announced by the NFL. Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, will host the game in February, with it staying in California in 2027 in Inglewood, home of the Los Angeles Rams. Atlanta will host the 2028 edition at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with a few cities already positioning to try and get the 2029 edition. Nashville's new NFL stadium will open in 2027 and looks destined to host a Super Bowl over the next decade. Las Vegas wants the game back after hosting it in 2024. Minneapolis is a longshot despite a glitzy new gridiron venue by being in a cold-weather city. London weather by may grim in early February as well, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell breaking ground with an international championship game may make bringing the game overseas too exciting to pass up.

Promising Giants rookie Abdul Carter brought crashing back down to earth with brutal hits by Jets rivals

There's been a ton of hype surrounding Giants rookie pass-rusher Abdul Carter, but the former Penn State standout was humbled on one play against the Jets on Saturday. The No. 3 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft has impressed in camp and turned heads in his preseason debut last week when he generated two pressures against Buffalo's All-Pro offensive lineman Dion Dawkins. But he was manhandled in one sequence against the Giants' New York rivals as he was knocked to the ground twice in quick succession. As Carter attempted to get to the quarterback, he was shoulder-checked to the ground by tight end Stone Smartt. He then tried to get to his feet but was quickly knocked down again by tackle Chukwuma Okorafor. Ultimately, he ended the game with just one assisted tackle as Big Blue notched an emphatic 31-12 win. Abdul Carter Welcome to the league young fella — JoeRobbie (@JoeRobbie_) August 16, 2025 Carter's teammates - including receiver Malik Nabers - have been effusive in their praise of the linebacker this offseason. 'That dude is a animal,' Nabers told Kay Adams on her 'Up & Adams' show. 'When you watch the explosiveness, the ability for him to turn his body, spin his body. I can't wait for people to actually see him... he's got an arsenal, and I can't wait for him to unleash it.' Offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor, who has been going up against Carter in practice, also had some extremely kind words for the rookie. 'He has traits that you can't teach. Certain things that – everyone has talent because you're in the NFL, everyone has hard work and determination – but there's a little thing that God just blessed you with that he has that I can count on one hand that guys in the NFL have,' he said, via 'That's not to put any unrealistic expectations on his shoulders, but the sky is the limit for that kid – even higher than the sky.' On Saturday, the Giants moved to 2-0 in the preseason with a 31-12 win over the Jets, as rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart impressed once again. The first-round pick completed 14 of 16 passes for 137 yards and another touchdown after tallying his first passing score against Buffalo. The Giants will play the Patriots in their final preseason test next week before traveling to the Commanders for Week 1 on September 7.

Chargers star Quentin Johnston rushed to hospital after getting knocked out cold by sickening blow to the head

Chargers receiver Quentin Johnston was hospitalized on Saturday night after suffering a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit. Johnston was going out to catch a pass from Justin Herbert in the first quarter when the Rams' Tanner Ingle hit him underneath his facemask and knocked him out cold. The receiver also slammed his head onto the turf as he fell, and displayed the 'fencing' concussion response as he briefly held his arms up while lying on his back. While players from both teams knelt and medical personnel tended to him, Johnston eventually moved his arms and legs, then sat up and walked to the cart that took him off the field. He could be seen holding his head on the sideline as he was carted to the locker room. The injury happened on the third play of the game and Johnston did not return. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh later told reporters that Johnston had indeed suffered a concussion. The receiver was also sent to the hospital as a 'precaution,' the coach said. The Chargers went on to narrowly lose 23-22 as Stetson Bennett had a strong game for the Rams. Johnston, who turns 24 on Sept. 6, caught 55 passes on 91 targets last season for 711 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns. The 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of TCU, he has 93 career receptions for 1,142 yards and 10 TDs in 32 regular season games (21 starts).
