Get ready to swoon: Ishaan Khatter and Bhumi Pednekar's chemistry in 'The Royals' leaves viewers weak-kneed
At the moment, social media is abuzz with talk of 'The Royals' on Netflix.
Curious about the high praise, I decided to binge the eight-part series while recuperating from a severe flu.
Echoing the allure of "Bridgerton", this series delves into the captivating history of a royal family, revealing hidden love affairs, concealed family truths, and monetary difficulties.
The plot, while simple and lacking significant depth, serves as a platform for the talented cast to inject considerable energy and dynamism into the narrative.
Admittedly, I wasn't bowled over after two episodes, but I put aside my misgivings and continued. And I'm glad I did.
The series and the characters grow on you.
Episode one plays out like the pages of a Mills & Boon novel: a dreamy guy, shirt open, showcasing his chiselled features, is being filmed on a horse on the beach. The shoot is disrupted by a jogger, who defiantly cuts across the cordoned-off public area.
This is how Aviraaj 'Fizzy' Singh (Ishaan Khatter) and Sophia Kanmani Shekhar (Bhumi Pednekar), the visionary CEO of Work Potato, first meet.
Talk about the perfect setup for their love story, which hits many snags in the series, more so after a failed hook-up between the two.
The premise centres on Sophia attempting to launch a pioneering hospitality initiative, where normal people get to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience of living in a palace like royalty.
Despite the board being hesitant about this initiative, Sophia is backed by her co-founder, Kunal (Udit Arora).
As fate would have it, her search for a place dovetails with Motibagh Palace in Morpur being in dire need of restoration.
Aviraaj's younger brother, Yuvaraj Digvijay "Diggy" Singh (Vihaan Samat), proposes that they strike a deal with Sophia's company to save the family from financial ruin.
His mother, Maharani Padmaja "Paddy" Singh (Sakshi Tanwar), grandmother Rajmata Maji Saheba Bhagyashree Devi (Zeenat Aman) and younger sister Yuvarani Divyaranjini "Jinnie" Singh (Kavya Trehan) are aligned with the proposal.
Of course, when Aviraaj returns home for his father's will and to take the reins, he is not a fan of the idea. And he is combative every step of the way, which riles Sophia as her career is on the line if the venture fails.
Khatter, who streamers would remember from 'The Perfect Couple' last year, is perfect for his princely role. Confident and charismatic, his portrayal also includes a subtle but expected arrogance.
Pednekar is a ravishing beauty who holds her own against him. The connection between them is electrifying, and fans can't stop raving about it.
With admirable finesse and grace, she embodies her role as a lady boss, and her undeniably sexy wardrobe is simply stunning.
Given her experience in social dramas, her emotional range is off the charts.
The supporting cast adds a wonderful dimension to the storytelling, with Diggy being an aspiring chef, Jinnie deciding to come out of the closet, and Paddy finally being true to herself after spending much of her life covering up one of the biggest family secrets - her late husband's secret boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Aviraaj is conflicted about taking over from his dad, especially when so much was left unsaid, as he resented him for breaking up their family.
"The Royals" is a series that evokes strong reactions, landing squarely in either the love or loath category.
Yet, those who embrace its romantic entanglements, dramatic flair, intricate deceptions, power dynamics, and characters' yearning for authenticity will find themselves captivated by its lavish visuals and surprising plot developments.
The cliffhanger ending strongly suggests the promise of a second season.
Rating: 3/5 *** solid and enjoyable, though not groundbreaking.
Below is another similar series to check out:
"Bridgerton"
I would suggest binge-watching all the available series, ahead of season four, which drops on the platform next year. The sweeping tale is set during the Regency era in England, where eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family attempt to find love.
The casting, premise and direction from this Shondaland offering will sweep you off your feet.

Harry and Meghan extend Netflix partnership with new deal
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Whether you love them or love to hate them, Harry and Meghan fans can rejoice because the royal duo are not leaving our screens anytime soon. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have officially extended their partnership with Netflix, signing a new "multi-year, first look deal". This means Netflix gets the first peek at any new shows or films their Archewell production company comes up with. This announcement definitely shuts down all the gossip about the couple and Netflix parting ways for good. While we don't know exactly how many years this new deal will last or how much cash is involved, it's described as a "looser arrangement" compared to their original $100 million deal from 2020.

Harry and Meghan sign reduced deal with Netflix
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will continue to develop film and TV projects for Netflix but on more limited terms, the streaming giant announced on Monday. The estranged British royal and his wife have worked with Netflix since 2020, producing documentary 'Harry & Meghan' and lifestyle series 'With Love, Meghan.' The latter showcased the Duchess of Sussex as a thriving domestic maven, hosting guests, harvesting honey and mixing bath salts against an idyllic California backdrop. It has been extended for a second season, and a holiday special due in December, Netflix said. But while the pair's previous Netflix deal bought the streamer exclusive rights to their output, the new multi-year agreement is a 'first look deal' In Hollywood parlance, this means Netflix has the right to say yes or no to a project before Harry and Meghan's media company Archewell Productions can shop it around other studios. Typically, first-look deals are less lucrative than exclusive deals, though they also provide producers with more flexibility. 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the 'As ever' brand,' said Meghan, referring to her recently re-branded line of lifestyle products including rose wine and apricot spreads. Bela Bajaria, Netflix's chief content officer, described Harry and Meghan as 'influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere,' in the statement. Harry and Meghan wed in a fairytale ceremony in 2018, before splitting from the British royal family and moving to California two years later. Cut off from the royal purse, the pair signed their first Netflix deal in 2020 for a reported $100 million. That figure was never confirmed, and no financial terms have been revealed for the extension. The New York Times reported Monday that the new deal is worth less for Harry and Meghan than the previous agreement, citing a person familiar with the terms. 'Harry & Meghan,' a six-episode tell-all about their relationship and exit from the House of Windsor, drew 23 million views in its first four days – a record for a Netflix documentary. Despite withering reviews from critics, 'With Love, Meghan' had over five million views in the first half of 2025, making it Netflix's most-watched cooking show. The upcoming holiday special will feature Meghan hosting 'friends and family' as they 'deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts, and share lots of laughs,' the statement promised. Later this year, Netflix will release a short documentary from Archewell Productions about a small orphanage in Uganda. The couple are also producing a 'romance feature adaptation' of Carley Fortune's novel 'Meet Me At The Lake,' though no Netflix release has been confirmed. Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-time girlfriend Georgina Rodríguez shared the joyful news of their engagement on social media. Image: Instagram Cristiano Ronaldo finally got the 'click'! Congratulations are in order for the Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and his long-time girlfriend, Georgina Rodríguez, who recently announced their engagement. Taking to Instagram on Monday, August 11, the Argentine-Spanish model shared the exciting news of their engagement as she showed off the giant diamond ring on her wedding finger, with Ronaldo's hand in the frame. The 31-year-old captioned her post: 'Yes, I do. In this and in all my lives.' The couple have been together for nine years and met in 2016 when the model was still working at a Gucci store in Madrid. They share two children out of the five kids the award-winning footballer has. The public has closely followed the couple's evolving love story, with much discussion surrounding their relationship and the swiftness of their engagement. They have had mounting pressure from not only the public, but also friends who have always asked when Ronaldo will pop the question since they have been together for such a long time. The model, who starred in her own Netflix reality show 'I Am Georgina' three years ago, had previously commented on engagement rumours, stating on the show that her friends 'were always joking about the wedding.' 'Since Jennifer Lopez's song 'The Ring Or When' came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me,' she said. Responding to the model's question, Ronaldo shared that they should wait for the 'click' to get married; however, he is certain that they will get married. 'I always tell her, 'When we get that click.' Like everything with our life, and she knows what I'm talking about,' he said. The footballer also added that the engagement or wedding could happen anytime. 'It could be in a year, or it could be in six months, or it could be in a month. I'm 1,000% sure that it'll happen,' he said. Fans and friends flooded the comment section to congratulate the couple on their engagement news. 'Just breathtaking! Congratulations,' @jenafrumes commented.
