With all that said, my family and I are year-round riders and live in Portland, Oregon. I live in terror that something will happen to my kids on my bike and there have been multiple times on rainy winters on hills when I have forced my much spouse to switch bikes and ride with the kids because he's much bigger than I am and I was scared. If this is you, then you need ABS brakes. This would've allayed my fears quite a bit.
If safety is also one of your primary concerns, the S10 also meets the DIN 79010, the German safety standard that's the only cargo bike standard that exists. The newly reinforced frame was tested under the DIN 79010 and verified to be safe carrying up to 463 pounds. Other components, like the rear rack, kickstand, and braking system are all tested under the DIN 79010, which is important because you don't want the kickstand to collapse or fall while you're strapping your baby into her Thule seat.
My kids are now 7 and 10 and ride their very own nice mountain bikes, but I did load up the panniers with mulch and wood chips and ride up and down the steepest hill in my neighborhood with about a 10 to 15 percent grade, and I felt pretty secure about its stopping power. This is important, because I have had a double battery mounted on my old Tern for so long that I forgot that the range on this is quite small. A 12-mile ride at over 20 mph depleted the battery to 50 percent in less than an hour, and I am a relatively small person (115 pounds). I would immediately put a double battery on this if you are considering it as a commuter. The Tern has a Kiox 300 Bosch display, which is easy to scroll through, but with the Flow app I would also probably just pop it off (you can pop it off!) and put my phone on a bike mount.
This may be a little hard to swallow: The bike costs $7,000, and that's just the starting point. You will need another battery, and I guarantee you are going to want accessories, especially if you have a kid. Tern's accessories are unmatched, especially if you have kids. I have a Storm Box, which protects my kids while riding in the rain. You can also put on a Sun Shield to protect your kids from the sun or an integrated TowBar so you can easily add a trailer.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A year after being lauded for its plan to replace thousands of aging, gas-powered mail trucks with a mostly electric fleet, the U.S. Postal Service is facing congressional attempts to strip billions in federal EV funding. In June, the Senate parliamentarian blocked a Republican proposal in a major tax-and-spending bill to sell off the agency's new electric vehicles and infrastructure and revoke remaining federal money. But efforts to halt the fleet's shift to clean energy continue in the name of cost savings. Donald Maston, president of the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association, said canceling the program now would have the opposite effect, squandering millions of dollars. 'I think it would be shortsighted for Congress to now suddenly decide they're going to try to go backwards and take the money away for the EVs or stop that process because that's just going to be a bunch of money on infrastructure that's been wasted,' he said. Beyond that, many in the scientific community fear the government could pass on an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming when urgent action is needed. Electrified vehicles reduce emissions A 2022 University of Michigan study found the new electric postal vehicles could cut total greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20 million tons over the predicted, cumulative 20-year lifetime of the trucks. That's a fraction of the more than 6,000 million metric tons emitted annually in the United States, said professor Gregory A. Keoleian, co-director of the university's Center for Sustainable Systems. But he said the push toward electric vehicles is critical and needs to accelerate, given the intensifying impacts of climate change. 'We're already falling short of goals for reducing emissions,' Keoleian said. 'We've been making progress, but the actions being taken or proposed will really reverse decarbonization progress that has been made to date.' Many GOP lawmakers share President Donald Trump's criticism of the Biden-era green energy push and say the Postal Service should stick to delivering mail. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, said 'it didn't make sense for the Postal Service to invest so heavily in an all-electric force.' She said she will pursue legislation to rescind what is left of the $3 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act allocated to help cover the $10 billion cost of new postal vehicles. Ernst has called the EV initiative a 'boondoggle' and 'a textbook example of waste,' citing delays, high costs and concerns over cold-weather performance. 'You always evaluate the programs, see if they are working. But the rate at which the company that's providing those vehicles is able to produce them, they are so far behind schedule, they will never be able to fulfill that contract,' Ernst said during a recent appearance at the Iowa State Fair, referring to Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Defense. 'For now,' she added, 'gas-powered vehicles — use some ethanol in them — I think is wonderful.' Corn-based ethanol is a boon to Iowa's farmers, but the effort to reverse course has other Republican support. Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, a co-sponsor of the rollback effort, has said the EV order should be canceled because the project 'has delivered nothing but delays, defective trucks, and skyrocketing costs.' The Postal Service maintains that the production delay of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicles, or NGDVs, was 'very modest' and not unexpected. 'The production quantity ramp-up was planned for and intended to be very gradual in the early months to allow time for potential modest production or supplier issues to be successfully resolved,' spokesperson Kim Frum said. EVs help in modernization effort The independent, self-funded federal agency, which is paid for mostly by postage and product sales, is in the middle of a $40 billion, 10-year modernization and financial stabilization plan. The EV effort had the full backing of Democratic President Joe Biden, who pledged to move toward an all-electric federal fleet of car and trucks. The 'Deliver for America' plan calls for modernizing the ground fleet, notably the Grumman Long Life Vehicle, which dates back to 1987 and is fuel-inefficient at 9 mpg. The vehicles are well past their projected 24-year lifespan and are prone to breakdowns and even fires. 'Our mechanics are miracle workers,' said Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union. 'The parts are not available. They fabricate them. They do the best they can.' The Postal Service announced in 2022 it would deploy at least 66,000 electric vehicles by 2028, including commercial off-the-shelf models, after years of deliberation and criticism it was moving too slowly to reduce emissions. By 2024, the agency was awarded a Presidential Sustainability Award for its efforts to electrify the largest fleet in the federal government. Building new postal trucks In 2021, Oshkosh Defense was awarded a contract for up to 165,000 battery electric and internal combustion engine Next Generation vehicles over 10 years. The first of the odd-looking trucks, with hoods resembling a duck's bill, began service in Georgia last year. Designed for greater package capacity, the trucks are equipped with airbags, blind-spot monitoring, collision sensors, 360-degree cameras and antilock brakes. There's also a new creature comfort: air conditioning. Douglas Lape, special assistant to the president of the National Association of Letter Carriers and a former carrier, is among numerous postal employees who have had a say in the new design. He marvels at how Oshkosh designed and built a new vehicle, transforming an old North Carolina warehouse into a factory along the way. 'I was in that building when it was nothing but shelving,' he said. 'And now, being a completely functioning plant where everything is built in-house — they press the bodies in there, they do all of the assembly — it's really amazing in my opinion.' Where things stand now The agency has so far ordered 51,500 NGDVs, including 35,000 battery-powered vehicles. To date, it has received 300 battery vehicles and 1,000 gas-powered ones. Former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said in 2022 the agency expected to purchase chiefly zero-emissions delivery vehicles by 2026. It still needs some internal combustion engine vehicles that travel longer distances. Frum, the Postal Service spokesperson, said the planned NGDV purchases were 'carefully considered from a business perspective' and are being deployed to routes and facilities where they will save money. The agency has also received more than 8,200 of 9,250 Ford E-Transit electric vehicles it has ordered, she said. Ernst said it's fine for the Postal Service to use EVs already purchased. 'But you know what? We need to be smart about the way we are providing services through the federal government,' she said. 'And that was not a smart move.' Maxwell Woody, lead author of the University of Michigan study, made the opposite case. Postal vehicles, he said, have low average speeds and a high number of stops and starts that enable regenerative braking. Routes average under 30 miles and are known in advance, making planning easier. But that's far easier said than done. When thinking about the future, it's an exciting time to contemplate where the automotive industry is going. The future for this sector has some pretty interesting things in store, including driverless vehicles, ones that are software-defined, and a slew of new and highly advanced electric vehicles (EVs) that are almost certainly the eventual future of the industry. If you want to jump into the EV industry, here's a look at one high-risk, high-reward EV start-up and another that investors should avoid. Steer clear of this EV stock VinFast Auto (NASDAQ: VFS) is a unique and intriguing EV start-up. The automaker is based in Vietnam, is backed by an extremely wealthy founder named Pham Nhat Vuong, has state-of-the-art production, and thoroughly dominates its home market. VinFast decided its next move would be to enter the U.S. and European markets, two of the most important globally. The problem: It is always going to be a foreign automaker with no customer base, attempting to get its foot in the door. Not an easy task, and not cheap. After losing billions of dollars to try to become a real player in the U.S. and Europe, Vietnam's richest man is steering the ride in a different direction: focusing on Asian markets such as India, Indonesia, and the Philippines. But VinFast already looks like a money pit. Consider that at least $14 billion has been poured into it from Vuong himself, his conglomerate Vingroup JSC, its affiliates, and external lenders. Yet in 2024, the company booked a $3.2 billion loss. Making matters worse, Chinese EV start-ups are beginning to expand globally and are finding much more success winning over consumers due to their advanced technology and more affordable pricing. If VinFast can't get a foothold in Asian markets before brutal Chinese competition moves in, it could leave the company playing in only its home market. While it's tempting to invest in young EV start-ups in the hope of them becoming major industry players, the truth is the automotive industry is ruthlessly competitive, and VinFast hasn't cracked the code so far. An accelerating start-up Similar to VinFast, Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) is a high-risk, high-reward EV start-up. The automaker, based in California, says it produces the world's most advanced EVs. Unlike VinFast, however, the company has been able to gain traction in the U.S. market and is starting to emerge as a viable player in the industry. Its sales volume is still low -- Lucid delivered 3,309 vehicles in the second quarter compared to rival Rivian's 10,661 -- but it's gaining momentum with the second quarter representing the sixth consecutive period of record deliveries. The good news is that the trend is likely to continue. The automaker is slated to rapidly accelerate production of its newly launched Gravity electric SUV during the second half of the year. With a price tag far lower than the company's Air sedan, the vehicle is expected to expand the company's addressable market considerably. Another vote of confidence for Lucid, as well as an exciting development in general, was the automaker's recent deal with Uber Technologies and Nuro that is expected to launch later in 2026 in a major U.S. city. The three companies plan to develop a new robotaxi service that combines the leading software-defined vehicle architecture of Lucid's Gravity SUV, the Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomy system, and Uber's global network and fleet management. Uber plans to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid vehicles over the next six years. The ride-hailing company is also putting its money where its mouth is with a $300 million investment in the automaker. Winners and losers There are going to be some serious winners and losers as the automotive industry gears up to evolve more over the next decade than it arguably has over the past century. Some EV start-ups will certainly close their doors, some already have, while some will become small niche players, and others may grow into the next Tesla or something even more impressive. These are high-risk investments and should remain a small position in any portfolio. Lucid is also burning cash at a rapid rate and will likely have to raise more. Hybrids offer drivers better fuel economy without fully committing to electric. But not every model lives up to the hype. Most hybrids help in the city MPG, not so much in the highway MPG. So if you drive a lot [on] highways and interstates, and expect great results. You will be disappointed.' According to car experts, here are five hybrids that just aren't worth the money. Chrysler Pacifica 'The Pacifica is a popular hybrid; rental fleets almost always include several of them, and they're one of the more affordable minivans. Unfortunately, they're not built to last,' said Melanie Musson, auto industry expert at Auto Insurance. 'They may be suitable for a rental fleet because they tend to be reliable for the first couple of years, but after that, they have a history of experiencing various types of problems,' she added. According to Musson, these issues range from electrical problems to complete engine failure. Pyle also pointed out that it's known for its charging issues because it's a plug-in hybrid. Save More: Toyota Sequoia 'The Sequoia is priced so that it competes with some luxury cars; however, it's a Toyota,' Musson said. 'You'd expect that as a hybrid, the fuel economy would be excellent, but it only gets a combined 20 mpg. There's no denying that the Sequoia is strong and tough, but it's overpriced and inefficient.' It has a starting price of over $60,000, limited cargo space and drives as big as it is, according to Car and Driver. While it's comfortable, it's not as practical as other full-size SUVs. Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4XE 'The Jeep brand is already struggling and has been for years with concerns related to engine, transmission and wiring,' Pyle said. 'Now, throw in the hybrid stuff on these vehicles. It still has all of the problems as mentioned previously, plus premature battery failure and fires.' According to Lemon Law Experts, a class action lawsuit has been filed against Jeep 4XE vehicles due to fire risks associated with their high-voltage batteries. However, it targets 2020-2024 Jeep Wranglers and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokees. One Redditor even posted a video of their 2021 4XE spontaneously combusting in their driveway. Ford F-150 According to Edmunds, the Ford F-150's hybrid powertrain is noisy, particularly when powering the onboard generator. 'The hybrid F-150 has a noisy cabin, which can be annoying if you're trying to listen to something or hold a conversation,' Musson said. 'Turbos, in general, are problematic, but the F-150 Hybrid turbo tends to have even more issues than usual.'
