AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs set contrasting tones ahead of new campaign
AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs head into the 2025/26 season with contrasting ambitions — Usuthu focusing on a long-term rebuild under Arthur Zwane, while Amakhosi, guided by Nasreddine Nabi, aim to end their trophy drought with a reinforced squad and continental aspirations.

AmaZulu wrapped up the 2024/25 season in a respectable sixth position, ending a campaign where flashes of potential were often overshadowed by a lack of consistency.
Looking ahead to the new season, Arthur Zwane prepares for his second full term at the helm—this time as the sole head coach after initially sharing the role with former Richards Bay tactician Vusimuzi Vilakazi, who departed during the course of last season.
Joining Zwane on the technical team is Simo Dladla, the former head coach of Durban City, who arrives fresh off guiding his side to promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Dladla's arrival is expected to bring renewed energy and tactical variety to the Usuthu setup.
Last season, AmaZulu finished as the top KwaZulu-Natal side on the table. With many teams struggling to find stability, Zwane will be targeting more consistency in that department, having seen his side drop key points due to lapses in rhythm and performance.
The club's transfer dealings signal a clear long-term vision. A major overhaul of the squad saw several regular players depart, most notably Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, as the club seeks to rebuild with fresh faces.
Another notable exit was that of midfielder Tshepang Moremi, who joined Orlando Pirates. While the deal may have been financially sound, replacing Moremi's influence in the middle of the park will be a tall order, given his impact last season.
Although the current squad may lack experience, it features several promising young talents, including players promoted from the club's reserve side. While instant success may be uncertain, the club's focus on youth development under Zwane's leadership could lay a strong foundation for the future.

Five things we learnt from opening round of the Betway Premiership
If the excitement of the opening round of Betway Premiership action at the weekend is anything to go by, then we are in for an interesting season. Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC, who finished in the top three last season, got off to stuttering starts with the Buccaneers and Stellies losing and the Brazilians drawing. Below are five the things we learnt from the opening round of fixtures that provided some edge-of-seat thrills and spills. Chiefs are up and running Kaizer Chiefs started their league campaign with a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC in Cape Town despite playing the match without coach Nasreddine Nabi, who is on compassionate leave after his wife was involved in a car accident in Tunisia. Amakhosi did not dominate the determined Stellies, who played for more than 70 minutes with 10 men after defender Siviwe Nkwali was shown red, but there were positive signs of good things to come.

Kaizer Chiefs pull out their Checkers Xtra Savings card for two new players
It's been a good couple of days for Kaizer Chiefs after a win over Stellenbosch, and things just got even better for the fans. Chiefs believe they can land Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi on a free transfer. The 22-year-old star is now a free agent. Long-standing Kaizer Chiefs target Asanele Velebayi will move for free this winter after Cape Town Spurs' relegation to the National First Division. 'PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber has finally delivered a ruling on Asanele Velebayi, declaring him a free agent,' SABC Sport's Mazola Molefe revealed. You don't get many better on-the-spot deals and discounts in South Africa than whipping out that nifty little orange card. Chiefs are potentially getting Velebayi on a free transfer and promising 19-year-old striker Luke Baartman for a snip, possibly as little as R3 million. What a deal! Velebayi made 23 appearances in the 2023-2024 Betway Premiership season. Striker Baartman made nine league appearances in the same season, scoring twice. Baartman has a massive ceiling and wouldn't represent an enormous financial risk in terms of outlay. Appollis' limitations costing Orlando Pirates, says ex-Chiefs attacker
Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khnaye has highlighted Oswin Appollis' weakness following Orlando Pirates' defeat against Sekhukhune United. The Buccaneers went down 1-0 to Babina Noko on Saturday evening in their first league match of the season. Despite Pirates signing 12 players during pre-season, they failed to score in 90 minutes and ultimately saw them go down at home. Appollis, who joined the Sea Robbers in July from Polokwane City, appeared to have adapted to his new team when he scored against his old team last week in the MTN8, but was found wanting on Saturday. Khanye feels the Bafana Bafana winger is limited and should operate in different attacking positions and not just on the left. 'There are players for certain teams, and when I speak, people think I'm drunk. This boy performs when he plays for other teams. I was surprised to see a winger who can't play on the left-hand side. You are an attacking player; you have to play on the left or right-hand side, regardless of whether you're left or right-footed. 'I'm surprised that Appollis can't play on the right-hand side. He is limited and too direct,' Khanye added. Having gone down 1-0 in their opening league match, Pirates will face Marumo Gallants in their next league match. After that, it's back to the MTN8 where the Buccaneers will host rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-finals. Oswin Appollis and Relebohile Mofokeng appear to be struggling to complement each other at Pirates, giventhat both players operate effectively on the left wing.
