Detroit HSSA where are they now? Donovan Edwards preparing for Senior Bowl

Yahoo31-01-2025
Donovan Edwards made news this week after talking about his Michigan team's success against Ohio State in his four seasons with the Wolverines.
Normally, that might seem like a weird flex as yes, Michigan beat Ohio State this year, but the Buckeyes then won four straight games to win the national title.
But Edwards, the 2021 Detroit High School Sports Awards Offensive Football Player of the Year who is preparing to play in Saturday's Senior Bowl in the hopes of putting an exclamation point on his stellar college career, has some cover in bragging about his four straight wins over Ohio State. The Wolverines, after all, themselves won the national title in 2024.

Edwards is a member of the National Team, which face the American Team in the college football all-star game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
And while Edwards draft prospects are bright, a Senior Bowl boost would be welcomed.

Edwards was second on Michigan this season with 589 rushing yards and four touchdowns, a year after rushing for 497 yards and five scores. In fact, by far his best season was in 2022 as a sophomore when he rushed 991 yards on 140 carries, a robust 7.1 yards per carry.
A good receiver out of the backfield, he added 18 catches for 83 yards this year after having 30 for 249 yards last year. And he's considered a good blocker.

Still, there are questions about his ability to be a No. 1 back at the next level, which have most experts projecting him as a day 3 (rounds 4-7) NFL Draft pick this year.
A big game Saturday could help boost the stock of the former West Bloomfield High School star, making him a player to watch.
The 2024-25 Detroit High School Sports Awards are June 16 at The Fillmore Detroit. The show is produced with the support of Gift of Life Michigan. Tickets are available here.

Two Scarlet Knights Change Positions in Training Camp

Every training camp, it is not uncommon to see a few players on each college football roster change positions so they can contribute more to the team. This decision to change positions often comes with a lot of influence from coaches as well. This Rutgers football training camp is no different, as two Scarlet Knights have decided to make a change on the depth chart. The first of these players is 6-foot-6, 244-pound Redshirt Freshman Monte Keener, who moved from Tight End to Defensive Line. Keener was a three-star prospect in the 2024 class, who was rated at the No. 91 tight end in the class and the No. 29 prospect in the state of Michigan. He did not see any action during his first season at Rutgers; however, the Rutgers Tight End room was extremely banged up last year and is one of the thinnest positions on the team this year in terms of depth. Players usually do not change positions unless encouraged by the coaching staff to do so. This is likely a case of his specific skills being better suited elsewhere. The other position change came from former high three-star prospect and true freshman Miron Gurman. Gurman made the switch from defensive line to offensive line before his first season at Rutgers. Gurman currently weighs in at 6-foot-6, 282 pounds. Since Gurman hasn't been practicing on the banks that long, Rutgers coaches probably saw his potential as a blocker not long after seeing him practice for the first time and encouraged him to make the switch as soon as possible. Either way, this change likely gives him his best chance to contribute to the team immediately. Rutgers has had success with players changing positions. For example, current Tight End Kenny Fletcher started his college career on the defensive side of the ball. Fletcher was one of Rutgers' most consistent pass catchers before his injury last season. Jack Flaherty dominates, Detroit Tigers offense pops in 10-0 win vs Houston Astros

Jack Flaherty dominated. It was his best start of the 2025 season. The Detroit Tigers need Flaherty to begin pitching like a No. 2 starter before it's too late to rely on him in the biggest games, but as the postseason approaches, Flaherty has experienced more bad than good with his performance. Flaherty took a big step in the right direction, leading the Tigers to a 10-0 win over the Houston Astros on Monday, Aug. 18, at Comerica Park. The offense supported Flaherty by scoring all 10 runs in a four-inning stretch, powered by four home runs. The 29-year-old fired seven scoreless innings — his first time completing seven innings in his two-year career with the Tigers, spanning 43 starts. Facing the Astros, he allowed just three hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. Flaherty threw 60 of 90 pitches for strikes. The Tigers (74-53) won the first of three games against the Astros the series. Flaherty dealt with the most stress in the first inning, as the Astros loaded the bases on Carlos Correa's double, Jose Altuve's single and Christian Walker's walk. With two outs, Victor Caratini lined out to end the inning. That's how Flaherty stranded the bases loaded. Flaherty cruised through the final six innings of his start. The Astros put two runners on base the rest of the way against Flaherty: Jacob Melton's hit-by-pitch in the second inning and Walker's single in the fourth inning. Flaherty retired the final 11 batters. He generated 11 whiffs on 36 swings for a 30.6% whiff rate: two fastballs, six curveballs and three sliders. For the second start in a row, he didn't throw any sinkers or changeup, which he already used sparingly but now isn't using at all. Flaherty owns a 4.51 ERA in 25 starts. Once that happened, the flood gates opened for the Tigers' offense to put up double-digit runs, thanks to home runs from Wenceel Pérez, Riley Greene, Trey Sweeney and Colt Keith. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Pérez hit a middle-middle cutter from right-hander Spencer Arrighetti. To get that pitch to hit for damage, Pérez battled for 10 pitches — swinging at all seven pitches in the zone and refusing to swing at all three pitches out of the zone. An incredible plate appearance led to an incredible result. The Tigers' offense kept its foot on the gas, scoring four runs in the fifth inning, one run in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning. In the fifth, Kerry Carpenter drove in two runs on a triple, followed by Riley Greene's two-run home run — taking a 5-0 lead. In the sixth, Keith provided a sacrifice fly after Sweeney's triple for a 6-0 lead. In the seventh, Sweeney hit a three-run home run and Keith hit a solo home run — taking a 10-0 lead. Greene has 29 home runs in 123 games. Alex Lange appears Right-handed reliever Alex Lange pitched in the ninth inning, protecting a 10-run lead. Before Monday's game, the Tigers activated Lange from the injured list. It was his first game for the Tigers since May 22, 2024. He completed a scoreless inning.
