AAP criticises Centre over decision to privatise porter services at stations
'Privatisation has robbed these workers of their dignity and livelihood. I've raised this issue multiple times, but the government has remained indifferent. Now, I will raise their voice in Parliament with even greater force,' AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said, adding that he will stand firmly with the community in their fight for justice.
He said that earlier, porters earned some income through the 'Coolie My App', but privatisation has taken that away as well. 'Porters across India's railway stations are struggling to survive. They don't even have enough to eat. How are they supposed to feed their families? This is the real crisis. I will raise this issue prominently during the Upcoming Parliamentary session. And if porters choose to protest at Jantar Mantar or elsewhere, I will join their agitation,' Mr. Singh said.

Waqf Board corruption case: Delhi court orders framing of charges against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, 10 others
A Delhi court Monday ordered the framing of charges against Aam Aadmi Party's Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan and 10 others in relation to the Delhi Waqf Board corruption case. The case pertains to alleged irregularities committed during Khan's tenure as chairman of the Board between 2016 and 2021. Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh of Rouse Avenue Court said in his order, 'In the present case, the accused individuals demonstrated a mutual understanding regarding illegal appointments of A-2 to A-11, for which public servants would be liable for criminal misconduct, an offence evident from their conduct as discussed above. This strongly suggests that a criminal conspiracy existed prima facie.' The court ordered that charges be framed against the accused persons under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and criminal conspiracy. 'In this case, the facts presented strongly indicate that A-1 to A-11 were actively involved in the conspiracy to first appoint A-2 and subsequently A-3 to A-11,' the judge added. According to the CBI, Khan had illegally appointed members to the board, causing a loss to the exchequer. It was argued by the agency that he himself was appointed as chairperson on March 12, 2016, illegally without placing the matter before the L-G. In conspiracy with Mahboob Alam (A-2), the CBI claimed that Khan got 9 others appointed illegally as well. Alam was appointed as the CEO by 'bypassing standard procedures and legal requirements, against the rules and norms', the CBI claimed. As per the agency, Alam and Khan collided and appointed 9 others to various positions on the Waqf Board 'against all rules and norms'. Many of the accused persons appointed were either relatives of Khan or known to him, claimed the CBI. 'Regarding accused… their respective roles, as outlined earlier, clearly indicate their involvement in a conspiracy to appoint A-2 and A-3. Their actions in manipulating the interview process demonstrate a conspiracy with individuals A-4 to A-11 to secure appointments unlawfully,' the court said. 'The fact that A-4 to A-11 obtained appointments despite many of them not submitting applications within the stipulated timeframe, failing to specify the post they applied for, receiving interview calls without formal notifications… along with their acquaintance and relationships to A-1, suggests a collusion between them,' it added.

Operation Sindoor was nothing but 'tamasha' of govt in media: Congress MP Praniti Shinde in Lok Sabha
Congress MP Praniti Shinde on Monday called Operation Sindoor a "tamasha" by the government, and claimed it was more of a media show than a real success. Shinde questioned what was actually achieved, how many terrorists were caught, whether any fighter jets were lost, and demanded that the government take responsibility and give clear answers. During the discussion on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, Praniti Shinde said, '... Operation Sindoor was nothing but a 'tamasha' of the government in the media. No one is telling us what was achieved in this Operation. How many terrorists were caught? How many fighter jets did we lose? Who is responsible and whose mistake is this, should be answered by the government...' Meanwhile, earlier, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh targeted the opposition in the Lok Sabha, accusing them of prioritising the wrong questions during the opening debate on Operation Sindoor. Replying to the questions raised by the Opposition during the Parliament monsoon session about possible Indian aircraft losses, Singh said that their questions did not represent the national sentiments. "In every country, citizens hand over different duties to the opposition and the government. The government's role is to work for the citizens, and the Opposition's role is to ask questions of the government on important matters related to citizens. Few members of the Opposition have been asking how many of our aircraft were shot down? I feel their question does not adequately represent our national sentiments," Singh said. Singh further hailed Operation Sindoor, saying that the military operation that was launched on May 7 in response to the Phalgam terror attack was a "success." "If they must ask a question, it should be whether India destroyed terrorist bases, and the answer to that is, yes... If you have a question to ask, it should be whether Operation Sindoor was a success. The answer is yes. Were terror heads destroyed? Yes. If you have a question to ask, ask this: Were any of our brave soldiers harmed in this operation? The answer is, no, none of our soldiers were harmed...," he further said. Operation Sindoor was carried out in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people on April 22 this year. India targeted nine terror hubs across Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir and Pakistan and neutralised over 100 terrorists. After the May 7 operations, India and Pakistan reached a cessation of hostilities understanding on May 10.

Punjab to implement drug prevention curriculum for students of Classes 9-12
Chandigarh, Jul 28 (PTI) The Punjab government will roll out a pioneering drug prevention curriculum for students of Classes 9 to 12 in all government schools. The move is part of the third phase of the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh" drive, Minister of School Education Harjot Singh Bains said here on Monday. Bains said Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will launch the statewide drug prevention curriculum on August 1 at Arniwala in Fazilka district. Giving details about the curriculum, Bains, according to a an official statement, further stated that 'this pioneering programme, created by the Nobel laureate Prof Abhijit Banerjee-led organisation J-PAL South Asia, will empower around eight lakh students in Classes 9 to 12 with prevention-focused skills to combat substance abuse". 'The curriculum will consist of 35-minute sessions, held every fortnight for 27 weeks, and will feature a mix of engaging content, including documentaries, quizzes, posters, and interactive activities. These sessions will focus on key areas such as myth-busting, refusal strategies, and resisting peer pressure, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions," he said. Bains said that the drugs prevention programme will have a wide reach, covering 3,658 schools and engaging over 6,500 trained teachers to empower approximately eight lakh students from Classes 9 to 12. This comprehensive programme will ensure a significant impact on Punjab's education system, equipping students with essential skills to say no to substance abuse, he said. 'This initiative is grounded in evidence, developed with leading behavioural scientists, and evaluated through randomised trials conducted in 78 government schools in Amritsar and Tarn Taran during FY 2024-25," he said. These trials covered 9,600 students and, evaluated by J-PAL South Asia, yielded significant results. The trials demonstrated a marked improvement in addiction risk awareness, with 90 percent of students recognising the high risk of addiction from trying 'chitta' even once, compared to 69 percent in the control group, the minister added. 'Additionally, the trial successfully debunked myths about addiction, with the belief that addiction can be overcome by willpower alone dropping from 50 percent to 20 percent," Bains said. 'Punjab becomes the first state in India to implement a statewide, evidence-based drug prevention curriculum, while recognising that the battle against drugs begins from the classroom, not in police stations," he said. Meanwhile, the Education Minister shared the details about the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh" campaign launched in March this year. He said that the state government has taken stringent actions, including putting over 23,000 drug peddlers behind bars, seizing their properties, and confiscating over 1,000 kg of heroin. These efforts demonstrate the government's dedication to tackling the drug menace and securing a brighter future for Punjab's youth, he added.
