Netflix series branded 'absolute masterpiece' as fans are left begging for more

Daily Mirror25-07-2025
Netflix viewers have been left completely gripped by a Western drama series set in the 1850s that has been labelled an 'absolute masterpiece' and one of the 'greatest of all time'
Netflix has struck gold with a Western drama series that's being hailed as one of the all-time greats. The gripping show, American Primeval, which debuted on the streaming giant in 2025, takes audiences back to the tumultuous times of 1857.

Spanning six episodes, it tells the tale of a mother on the lam and a band of Latter-Day Saints fighting for survival amidst the chaos of the Utah War. Starring GLOW's Betty Gilpin as Sara Rowell, a mother evading a murder accusation, the series sees her character enlisting the help of Isaac Reed, played by Taylor Kitsch, to escort her and her son Devin, portrayed by Preston Mota, to the safety of Crooks Springs.

Although not directly based on a specific true event, American Primeval powerfully portrays the struggles faced by those living in that era. It draws inspiration from historical incidents like the Mountain Meadows Massacre, where Latter-Day Saint militia and Native American allies brutally killed about 120 members of the Baker-Fancher wagon train.
The Netflix series doesn't shy away from brutality, featuring relentless gunfights, axe battles, and high-stakes confrontations. Alongside Gilpin and Kitsch, the cast includes Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, and Derek Hinkey.
The show's grim and turbulent backdrop is captured in its synopsis: "Up is down, pain is everywhere, and innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace - even fewer know compassion. There's no safe haven in these wild lands, and only one goal matters: survival.", reports the Express.

The series currently boasts an impressive 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an 8 out of 10 rating on IMDB. Peter Berg's American Primeval has sparked widespread acclaim across social media platforms, with numerous viewers hailing the production as an "absolute masterpiece".
One enthusiastic fan declared: "@netflix American Primeval is a MASTERPIECE! ! ! I NEED MORE! Do they make it to California! ? ! ? ! ? What happens to Bridger! ? ! ? Does he go get the army ? ? PLEASE I NEED MORE."
Another viewer passionately recommended the series, writing: "One of the best TV shows I will find this year, a great introductory to the year 2025. Such an amazing show! Brutal and realistic conflict, believable acting, great story and drama. If you're the kind of person who enjoys fantastic action, a rigorous story that grips not only your attention but your feelings as well, then give this a try. You won't be disappointed."

A third admirer proclaimed: "American Primeval. Bravo! ! What an absolute masterpiece! ! Best thing I've watched in a very long time! ! Well done! ," whilst a fourth viewer agreed: "American Primeval gotta be one of the greatest short series I've ever seen on television had me gripped from start to finish."
One fan, clearly enamoured with the series, gushed: "Just finished American Primeval, and I have to say-this series is absolutely phenomenal. From start to finish, it's an intense, gripping, and immersive journey into the brutal and unforgiving American frontier of the 1850s. The storytelling is raw and unflinching, making you feel like you've been transported back in time, facing the same dangers, hardships, and moral dilemmas as the characters."
Another viewer concurred, praising: "By far the best historical drama show I have seen in years. This is one of those rare shows which immerses you in the midst of action and makes you feel what the main protagonist feels in the moment."

Virgin River fans baffled by character ages as timeline gives no clues

Virgin River fans appear to be puzzled by the characters' ages in the hit Netflix series, with many saying the show's timeline only adds to the confusion Fans of the hit Netflix show Virgin River have been left scratching their heads after a recent Reddit thread sparked confusion over the ages of some of the show's main characters. ‌ Despite the show's strong storytelling, viewers say the timeline is becoming increasingly hard to follow, particularly when it comes to determining how old the characters are meant to be. ‌ As viewers of the show know, Virgin River's timeline is completely different in comparison to the time frame the series has been released in. The timeframe is around five months from season one to season six, where as the season first premiered in 2019 - six years ago. ‌ Due to the awkward timeline, fans are extremely confused when it comes to Jack and Brady, and what age they are supposed to be in the show. One viewer took to Reddit with the question: "How old is Brady supposed to be if he served in the military with Jack? I know Jack is 50 but Brady still looks to be 25-30?!" ‌ This caused an influx of fans to comment, giving their suggestions on the character ages. One fan replied, confirming that Jack was not 50, instead suggesting he is "around 40". A third fan suggested: "Jack says he enlisted right after college at 18, served for 20 years, and then lived in Virgin River for 7 years. That would make him about 45, I think. Brady is probably around 30 to 35." ‌ One thing that seemed to confuse fans the most was Jack's confession in season three regarding his previous marriage to his high school sweetheart. One viewer stated: "Jack said he got married and divorced at 18, which he said was 30 years ago, so he's at least 48." Another had a guess, penning: "I agree that Brady looks a lot younger. He doesn't have the greying hair and the lines in his face that Jack has. He can't be much younger, though, if they served together when Jack was young." However, one fan had a hilarious response, telling fans to completely ignore the ages of the characters. They stated: "In Virgin River ages don't make sense in the same way Grey's Anatomy ages don't make sense. I try not to think about it too much haha. Just remember in VR - age and time do not exist." ‌ Despite the fan confusion, in Robyn Carr's novels, which the series is based on, Mel is approximately 32 while Jack is 40. Brady is one of the younger male characters and is thought to be around 35. However none of the characters ages have been confirmed within the Netflix series and, with the slow moving timeline of the show, it means almost all of the character haven't aged or celebrated a birthday since episode one of season one.

From Sunday me, my Mum and sisters spent precious time with him around the crying, laughing, sharing memories. We'll see you there soon.' And he did. I had my hand on his heart as the ripples softened and stopped.", reports the Express. "A gentle end to a gentle life. So much love and laughter and sunshine across days I'll never forget. He is in my mind all the time now as we adjust to a world without him in it. ‌ "I can't quite accept that's real yet. But we think it's really important for anyone going through this to know that the end can be peaceful and beautiful." Supporters immediately flooded Nina with messages of comfort at the time. Because of dementia I lost the home I could go to and still be a child. I lost one of those few pillars of people who I knew would love me, whatever. I thought that support was lost. But now I know that just being with him is enough. I don't know if it's primal, hormonal, chemical, emotional….. but leaning my head on his chest and closing my eyes for a few minutes gives me the sense of safety and love that I've always had and that I still need." BBC Breakfast airs everyday from 6am on BBC One.

Queen's strict royal style rule she swore by but Meghan Markle didn't follow it

The late Queen often stepped out in bright outfits for major events - but there is one colour that she refused to wear, that Meghan wore at many engagement The late Queen Elizabeth was known for wearing bright colours to major royal events, stepping out in colour-coordinated outfits that featured matching dresses, coats, hats and complimentary accessories. ‌ Over her decades as monarch, the Queen became known as a style icon and inspiration, prompting many to play with all the colours of the rainbow when picking their daily outfits. ‌ While the late Queen always opted for daring and colourful ensembles, one member of the royal family chose to do the opposite: Meghan Markle. According to royal author Robert Hardman, there was one major reason why the Queen always chose to be brightly dressed - so she stood out during busy royal events. ‌ In Hardman's biography titled Our Queen, the royal author described the late royal as 'engagingly modest' despite being one of the most famous women in the world. He said: 'My favourite remark she ever said was, 'I can never wear beige because nobody will know who I am'.' The Queen's colourful side came out during ceremonies and other royal engagements that required a smart dress code, and she didn't hold back with her outfits as she made sure the crowd could spot her, especially due to her below average 5'3' frame. ‌ As well as wanting to wear bright colours, the late Queen also tailored her outfits to fit the nation that she was visiting. For example, during her visits to Australia, the monarch would always wear the nation's colours of green and gold. Journalist and royal author Sali Hughes also claimed in her 2019 book, titled Our Rainbow Queen, that Queen Elizabeth and her dressers would carefully consider the itinerary of a tour or engagement before settling on an outfit. ‌ Ms Hughes wrote: 'She won't attend an engagement at a grassy venue, like a racecourse or garden party, in camouflaging green. But she will happily deploy green to stand out where it's needed.' While the Queen always opted for colourful tones to dress in, Meghan Markle adopted the opposite style technique, as she revealed in her Netflix docuseries that, during her time as a working royal, she would don neutral colours to 'blend in'. Meghan explained her fashion choices, saying in the docuseries alongside her husband Prince Harry: "Most of the time that I was in the U.K., I rarely wore colour. There was thought in that. ‌ "To my understanding, you could never wear the same colour as Her Majesty [Queen Elizabeth II] if there's a group event, but then you also shouldn't be wearing the same colour as one of the other more senior members of the family," she said, possibly referring to royals like Princess Kate or Queen Camilla. "So I was like, 'Well, what's a colour that they'll probably never wear?' Camel, beige, white. So, I wore a lot of muted tones, but it was also so I could just blend in. I'm not trying to stand out here. There was no version of me joining this family and me not doing everything I could to fit in. I don't want to embarrass the family."
