Morgantown Post 2 set to host Area, State Legion Baseball tournaments over next two weeks

Dominion Post14 hours ago
MORGANTOWN – Mylan Park will see its fair share of baseball over the next couple of weeks as the Morgantown Post 2 American Senior Legion team will host both the Area 2 and WV State Legion baseball tournaments.
The Area 2 tournament will see Post 2 welcome Buckhannon, Bridgeport, and Clarksburg to Dale Miller Field. Opening games will be played on Tuesday, with Clarksburg and Bridgeport starting the day at 4:00 p.m., followed by Morgantown and Buckhannon.
Winners will play at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while the losers will play an elimination game at 4:00 p.m.
The championship will be held on Thursday at 7:00 p.m., and if needed, the two final teams will return Friday at the same time for the deciding game. The top two teams will advance to next week's state tournament.
Morgantown enters the Area 2 tournament with a 9-12 record, but has gone 5-1 against the field in the area tournament this week.
'We've had a roller coaster of a summer,' First-year head coach Jacob Goodknight said. 'We started the season 5-0 and then had quite the losing streak, but that's baseball. There's always going to be adversity in a game that embraces failure. I think we've learned that if we go play as hard as possible for seven innings and if we stay together as a team, we should be happy with the results at the end of the day.'
Post 2 is led offensively by Kane Williams, who is hitting .440 at the plate with 22 hits and 15 RBI in 50 at-bats. Nine of those hits went for extra bases, while he also scored 12 runs.
UHS graduate and Bethany College signee, Brance McCune, leads Post 2 with 25 hits and 21 runs scored.
Three pitchers have gone over 18 innings this summer for Post 2 as Mason Chaney, Grayson Campbell, and Lucas Shinn are solid options to start on the bump. Others, such as Judd Messerly, Daniel Grabo, and Tristan Milik, will all be available for Goodknight's club as well.
'We are talented on the field, but one thing that has impressed me recently is the leadership within the team,' Goodknight said. 'Some of our older guys have taken control of the dynamic in the dugout and made guys accountable. If you have a bad at-bat or make an error, move on. They are helping the younger guys understand that you can help the team win even if you're not having the best day.'
Goodknight says one of the best things about his team this summer has been the growth of the team dynamics.
'We have such a broad mix of players, some of whom haven't played Legion baseball and some who have been with the program since they were 14 years old,' he said. 'We have been able to come together, and now we have to realize that despite what we do during our school seasons, none of that matters now. We represent Morgantown, and more importantly, represent everything that '2' on top of our hats stands for, as well as the history that comes with it. I hope that when they go back to their respective programs in the spring, they will take a couple of lessons from this summer.'

Kyle Schwarber Responds on Possibly Leaving Phillies to Join 'Awesome' NL Rival

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Philadelphia Phillies hit the All-Star break in the midst of a close race for the top spot in the National League. The Phillies are tied for the third-most wins in the NL, fewer than three games back from the top spot held by the Los Angeles Dodgers. And as the race for the National League pennant heats up, they'll be counting on their sole offensive All-Star to keep up his career pace. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber has carried the Phillies' offense for much of the season, ranking first among his teammates for total runs, home runs, RBI, on-base percentage and more so far this season. But his production is also coming with a cost, as it means he is likely to hear from plenty of suitors in free agency this coming winter. "Maybe the Phillies and Schwarber can work out something quickly in the offseason," Scott Lauber wrote for The Philadelphia Inquirer. "Or maybe another team will swoop in." (Photo by) More Barry/Getty It's hard to say what Schwarber's future market might look like. He's been one of the sport's most productive sluggers for years, but he's also 32 years old and limited defensively. But as an Ohio native, where he still has a home, Schwarber could be a fit with the NL upstart Cincinnati Reds. And when Lauber asked Schwarber about the chances of joining his hometown team in free agency, Schwarber welcomed the idea. "Being a baseball fan and growing up and watching Cincinnati baseball for your whole youth, that's how you fall in love with baseball, I think it would draw your attention, right?" Schwarber said, per Lauber. "Being able to play for your childhood team is something that I think it'd be awesome." As of now, Schwarber and the Phillies are most focused on completing a strong second half and making a deep playoff run. But when the time comes, it sounds like the slugger will be open to other offers if his current team can't head them off with a new contract first. Red Sox Would be Crazy to Not Give Alex Bregman $200 Million Contract

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox know what it's going to take for Alex Bregman to re-sign with them. Whether they're willing to pay it is a different question. In a recent article for the New York Post, insider Jon Heyman provided the dollar figure Bregman will likely pursue in the offseason. BOSTON, MA - JULY 13: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox connects on a hit during the eighth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on July 13, 2025 in Boston,... BOSTON, MA - JULY 13: Alex Bregman #2 of the Boston Red Sox connects on a hit during the eighth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on July 13, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. More"The Red Sox and Alex Bregman haven't yet spoken about an extension," wrote Heyman. "It's rare a star of Bregman's stature signs within months of unfettered (no qualifying offer attached) free agency. But there's some chance, as both sides wouldn't mind getting something done. The belief here is that with Bregman's great start a deal would likely have to be around $184M (what he offered to sign with the Tigers), or perhaps even $200M." If Bregman takes $200 million over five or six years, the Red Sox should be begging him to take it. He's earned every right this year to ask for that and more. Aside from the fact that he's hitting .298 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI over halfway through the season, Bregman has been flashing the leather over at third base. Oh, and let's not forget the organization explicitly chose him over superstar Rafael Devers. The Red Sox made their bed last month when Devers was shipped to the Giants. Even if Bregman's agent, Scott Boras, allegedly doesn't like to negotiate extensions during the season, Craig Breslow needs to have Boras on speed dial the second the season ends. Boston needs to lock him down as soon as possible to prevent other teams from even having a chance to sign him. The organization would be borderline insane to let him walk especially if it opens the door for him to join another American League contender. If the Red Sox choose to not meet Bregman's demands, it raises a lot of questions about the organization's direction moving forward. LSU baseball slugger Jared Jones drafted by Pittsburgh Pirates

LSU baseball slugger Jared Jones learned his professional home on Monday. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the ninth round with the No. 263 pick on Monday. Jones was a top-150 prospect entering the 2025 season. He had a chance to go pro last year, but elected to return to LSU. An up and down junior year hurt Jones' draft stock, but he remained productive, and the raw power is there. Advertisement Jones finished 2025 with .323 batting average, a .613 slugging, 22 home runs, and 76 RBI. He's not much of a runner, but he still managed to steal five bases and score 66 runs. He came through in big moments for the Tigers during the NCAA Tournament, delivering clutch hits when the team needed him most. That included a walk-off vs. Arkansas to send LSU to the College World Series final. That hit will go down as one of the most memorable in LSU history. Through three seasons at LSU, Jones amassed 189 appearances. As a freshman, he was a part of the 2023 national championship team, then developed into a powerful slugger by 2024. He hit 28 homers and commanded attention from professional scouts before returning for another year in Baton Rouge.
