Mumbai: Demonstrating his value for selection in the first Test against England,
Shardul Thakur
produced an impressive unbeaten 122 from 68 deliveries while representing India A against India in the intra-squad fixture at Beckenham on Sunday.
The third day saw Thakur become the second player to reach three figures in India A's innings, following Sarfaraz Khan's 101 from 76 balls (featuring 15 boundaries and two sixes) before his retired dismissal on day two. Thakur achieved his century facing India's Test bowling unit of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh.

The intra-squad match between India and India A was called off by the management midway through Day Three.
The game was supposed to last until Monday, June 16. However, the management called the match off after two and a half days.
"Team India's intra-squad game has ended. A complete day off on 16th June. The team will leave for Leeds on 17th June," the BCCI stated on Sunday.
The practice match wasn't telecast live, nor were the scores made available to the media officially. A source tracking developments told TOI, "It was the team's discretion whether to play a three or four-day match.

The scores can't be completely relied upon, because a few players batted twice (Washington Sundar for India A, for example)."
Earlier, India had posted 469 on the board.
Poll
Should Shardul Thakur be included in the playing XI for the Headingley Test?
Yes, he deserves a chance
No, stick with Nitish Kumar Reddy
Notably, chief selector
Ajit Agarkar
and BCCI's Centre of Excellence head
VVS Laxman
observed Sarfaraz and Shardul's centuries at Beckenham.
Shardul was unbeaten at the crease on 19 off just 10 balls, with four fours at stumps on Day 2.
Thakur's fine show in the practice match now gives him an edge over fellow all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Shardul, who last played a Test for India in 2023, was not a part of India's squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Nitish Kumar Reddy played all five Tests, scoring a century in the Melbourne Test.
Kuldeep Yadav hints at spin-friendly wicket ahead of England Test series
Shardul has a knack for taking wickets against the tide and is rated highly as a man with a golden arm. Whether he gets a go in the playing XI for the Headingley Test remains to be seen.
In his 11 Test matches for India, Thakur has claimed 31 wickets, including one five-wicket haul, while accumulating 331 runs across 18 innings with a highest score of 67.
Following strong performances for Mumbai in the
Ranji Trophy
, Thakur earned his Test squad recall for the England series. His previous Test appearance was against South Africa in Centurion during December 2023.

‘UP wrestler will win Olympic medal in 2028'

1 2 3 4 The trials to select the Indian team for the Under-20 Asian Wrestling Championship, scheduled to be held from July 8 to 13 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, held at the Regional Sports Authority of India (SAI) facility on Saturday. On the sidelines of the trials, Fazal Khan spoke to the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Sanjay Singh, about various aspects of wrestling, ongoing training camps, and preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Excerpts: Q: What steps are being taken to popularise wrestling at the grassroots level across the country? A: Since I took over the Wrestling Federation of India, there have been many positive developments. Last year, our female athletes won several medals at the Under-17 and Under-23 Asian Championships held in Jordan, and our women wrestlers were crowned champions at the Under-17 World Championship. We are closely monitoring the performance and fitness of every athlete competing nationally and internationally. We remain in constant touch with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) regarding the athletes' dietary needs and any additional requirements. Issues related to training camps have been resolved — men are training in Lucknow, and women in Sonipat. Recently, the Indian wrestling team participated in the World Championship Rankings, and five women wrestlers returned with gold medals. India won a total of 21 medals. Q: Why hasn't Uttar Pradesh produced as many international players as states like Punjab and Haryana? A: You could say that Haryana excels not only in wrestling but in all sports. One key reason is the active involvement of parents and good coaches in the athletes' development, which contributes greatly to their success. Q: Two WFI presidents, including yourself and your predecessor, have come from UP. Do you think a world-class wrestling arena can be set up in the state? A: When Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was WFI president, he met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and there was a plan to build a large, world-class wrestling arena in Lucknow. However, no work has started on it yet. I urge the chief minister to consider restarting this project. Q: Do you think we need more trained coaches to guide wrestlers from the grassroots to the senior level? A: The Wrestling Federation of India conducts United World Wrestling (UWW) Level One, Level Two, and Level Three courses for coaches every six months. In WFI programmes, it is mandatory for any coach involved to have completed the UWW Level One course — without it, they are not allowed to coach. Q: How prepared is WFI for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics? A: We are expecting to win around five medals at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. A female wrestler from Uttar Pradesh is also expected to bring home a medal this time. Q: What steps are being taken at the grassroots level to discover budding talent across the country? A: WFI is actively identifying wrestlers at the grassroots level. Talented individuals are being discovered through small wrestling academies — many of them run by former wrestlers — and local tournaments. We then provide them opportunities to compete in bigger tournaments and eventually bring them into the SAI system.

Bravo, Bavuma's boys

Times of India's Edit Page team comprises senior journalists with wide-ranging interests who debate and opine on the news and issues of the day. South Africa became Test champ thanks to grit & patience. Pointers for a young Indian team Choker' is the unkindest of labels in sport. It means you have the talent, but not the temperament to win, especially when it matters most. It means your defeats are caused as much by your opponents as by the demons in your head. It is a terrible cross to bear and post-apartheid South Africa carried it in cricket for nearly three decades. Starting from Allan Donald's needless run-out against Australia in 1999 ODI World Cup semifinal to their capitulation from a dominant position against India in the 2024 T20 World Cup final – the Proteas frequently settled for failure when success looked eager for an embrace. In the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's, South Africa rewrote the script, buried the tag of 'choker' forever. They were up against an opponent which relishes the big stage and seldom concedes an inch. But this time captain Temba Bavuma and his men didn't need any. In a high pressure encounter, where every delivery was fiercely contested over four days, South Africa played the game, ignored the occasion. Opener Aiden Markram's 136 will rank among the greatest Test innings of all time. Paceman Kagiso Rabada (5/51 and 4/59) was the knife that cut through Australia. But it was injured captain Bavuma's 66 that was inspirational, typifying the new determined South Africa which deservedly became champions. Hopefully, the triumph will also act as a unifier in a country increasingly torn apart by differences within. South Africa's triumph also carries a lesson or two for a largely inexperienced Team India touring England. Australia were the favourites to win. But S Africa bowled with fire, batted with patience and discipline. They never gave up. They believed. Captain Gill and company would do well to imbibe these traits on a tour that will test them hard. Vadodara to host men's ODI after 16 years!

Vadodara: The 16-year-long wait for cricket-loving Barodians is finally set to end. The city will host a men's one-day international (ODI) at the Kotambi International Cricket Stadium. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The BCCI has scheduled the first ODI between India and New Zealand in Vadodara on Jan 11, 2026. Coincidentally, the last ODI played in the city in 2010 was also between India and New Zealand at the Reliance Stadium. India won the match by nine wickets. "It is a matter of privilege for a venue to be chosen to host an international cricket match in any format. The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) is honoured as it has been given an opportunity to host the India-New Zealand ODI," said Pranav Amin, BCA president. The BCCI recently announced its cricketing calendar for the rest of the year, but Vadodara didn't figure on the list of venues for any international men's cricket match in 2025. Sources in the BCA said that Amin took up the matter with the BCCI and requested the senior officials to consider the city as a venue for the men's ODI or international T20 match, as the city now has a brand new international cricket stadium. BCA officials said that the city will now be regularly allotted ODIs and international T20 matches. The city has in the past hosted 10 ODIs at Reliance Stadium. However, the BCCI brought in a rule that mandated the state cricket associations to own a stadium for hosting international matches. The BCA didn't have a stadium of its own and hence missed out on several opportunities to host ODIs, T20 internationals, and IPL matches over the last 16 years. The cricket stadium was a major poll issue in the BCA for nearly 20 years, and the association even made a few attempts to buy land for constructing a stadium. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The deals, though, failed. The BCA finally managed to buy a piece of land at Kotambi in 2014, but the stadium project kept hanging in the balance amid controversies and differences within the BCA management. Construction of the stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000 spectators, finally took off in 2020. In December 2024, the Rs 250-crore Kotambi stadium hosted an India-West Indies women's ODI, which was followed by Women's Premier League T20 matches this year.
