Fox Sports hosts blasted for tone-deaf commentary after devastating Jayson Tatum Achilles injury

Daily Mail14-05-2025

Fox Sports personalities Craig Carton and Mark Schlereth have been blasted by fans for their commentary on Jayson Tatum's recent Achilles injury.
The Celtics star went down with a non-contact injury in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Knicks, and the team announced the following day that he had undergone surgery for a ruptured right Achilles tendon.
And while the news is a devastating blow for the Celtics in this series and beyond, it will certainly give the Knicks a better chance of progressing after they claimed a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Carton and Schlereth drove home that point in rather tone-deaf fashion afterwards.
'The fans will be like, 'I want their best,' three-time Super Bowl winner Schelereth began on Breakfast Ball. 'I was like, 'No, I don't.' I don't want their best. I pray for all their guys to get hurt and all our guys to stay healthy, and I'm not an animal, not significantly hurt, just miss the game.'
'You never root for injury,' Carton added. 'It was sad to see one of the great players in the sport go down with what is apparently a torn Achilles, which knocks him out for the rest of the postseason and the majority of next year, which sucks. Blah, blah, blah.. but I ain't crying about it. I'm not making excuses for it.

"It was sad to see one of the great players in the sport go down... but I'm not crying about it. I've never seen a championship since 1986 with the New York Mets when I was in high school. I want the easiest possible road to a championship." — @craigcartonlive pic.twitter.com/HE7qji3wPt

'I've said a million times on this show and every show I've ever done, I've never seen a championship since 1986 with the New York Mets when I was in high school. I want the easiest possible road to a championship,' he continued.
'When you're at the parade, nobody ever looks back and goes, 'Yeah, but you beat the Celtics in Game 5 without Jayson Tatum.' You celebrate the championship. So, sucks being you, Boston. And I don't root for the injury, but I ain't complaining about it.'
The pair's remarks did not go down well with fans as Tatum, 27, faces a long road to recovery.
'Pathetic and classless,' one said on X.
'You make great sports fans look like a joke you should be ashamed to be a part of a New York fanbase,' another said of New York-native Carton.
'So he's getting fired, right?,' another asked of Schlereth
And a fourth said: 'I can't believe someone still pays @markschlereth to offer any sort of opinions on sports.
In confirming that Tatum had ruptured his Achilles and announcing he had undergone surgery, the Celtics did not provide a timetable for the six-time All-Star's return.
He had played tremendously in what turned out to be a 121-113 Knicks win, scoring 42 points and grabbing eight rebounds before he was forced to leave the game.
The Knicks are now one game away from getting back to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000.
Game 5 will be in Boston on Wednesday night, while a potential Game 6 would return to New York. The Celtics would also host Game 7 if they can keep the series alive.

Thunder-Pacers NBA Finals short on star power

LOS ANGELES, June 4 (Reuters) - The NBA Finals matchup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers may be an intriguing one for basketball junkies but could struggle to capture the imagination of a wider audience due to a lack of marquee names. Anyone who believes the NBA is fixed in favor of LeBron James, Steph Curry and Luka Doncic will struggle to explain how Commissioner Adam Silver failed to engineer any of their teams making it even as far as the conference finals this post-season. In reality, Silver has pushed for a more level playing field and as a result we get a championship tilt between two small market teams featuring ascending stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder and Pacers' guard Tyrese Haliburton. Incredible players, no doubt, but not exactly household names - at least not yet. Potentially making matters worse from a rating standpoint is that the Thunder are heavily favored to win their first title since relocating to Oklahoma City in 2008. The franchise's lone title came in 1979 when they were the Seattle SuperSonics. The Thunder won both regular season meetings with the Pacers en route to a sparkling 68-14 record, good for the fifth-most wins in NBA history. In the playoffs, they swept their first-round series against the Memphis Grizzlies, beat the Denver Nuggets in seven games and brushed aside the Minnesota Timberwolves in five contests to reach their first Finals since 2012. The Thunder have been the best team all season long and there is no reason to believe that has changed. The Pacers meanwhile were a surprising Eastern Conference champions. Seeded fourth, they eased past the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers before dispatching a gritty New York Knicks squad in six games to reach their first Finals in a quarter century in their quest for a maiden NBA title. Both teams like to do their damage in transition and the Pacers will need to limit their turnovers against the opportunistic Thunder defense to have any chance in the series. Working in their favor is Haliburton, who has been playing with a chip on his shoulder since an anonymous player poll conducted by The Athletic in April named him the most overrated player in the league. The 25-year-old has been a key part of the team's success in the playoffs while getting key support from one-on-one specialist Pascal Siakam and sharpshooter Aaron Nesmith. The Thunder meanwhile are a juggernaut with the potential to be a dynasty thanks to league MVP Gilgeous-Alexander - also known as "SGA" - versatile big man Chet Holmgren, explosive guard Jalen Williams, and crafty defender Alex Caruso. Even if the Finals fail to deliver a compelling series, the NBA can rely on the coming off-season drama to keep fans engaged. Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant are among the superstars that could be wearing new jerseys come next season so the action will continue even after one of the teams walks away with the Larry O'Brien trophy. The best-of-seven Finals tip-off on Thursday in Oklahoma City.

Reds put RHP Hunter Greene on IL, sign LHP Wade Miley

June 4 - The Cincinnati Reds placed ace right-hander Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, citing a right groin strain. Greene started for the Reds on Tuesday in their 4-2 home win over the Milwaukee Brewers. He told the staff that he felt discomfort and left the game after five innings. The outing was just his third since being activated from the injured list on May 23 after missing two weeks with the same ailment. "We stayed here for a while last night, we talked to him, we talked to trainers," Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Wednesday, per The Athletic. "Since it happened once and this is twice, we've got to figure this out. And then his lower back was starting to (affect him) and we're trying to figure out if it's related. We've got to get him healthy. It was kind of an easy decision even without seeing the MRI." An MRI was scheduled for later Wednesday. In corresponding moves, the Reds signed left-hander Wade Miley and transferred right-hander Rhett Lowder (right forearm, left oblique strains) to the 60-day injured list. Miley opted out of his minor league deal with the Reds on Sunday and became a free agent. He is coming off ulnar collateral ligament surgery and has not pitched in the majors since April 16, 2024, with the Milwaukee Brewers. The 25-year-old Greene, an All-Star in 2024, has made 11 starts this season and is 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA. He has struck out 73 batters and walked just 14 in 59 2/3 innings. He has a 22-28 record and a 3.74 ERA in 83 career appearances (all starts). The Reds selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 MLB draft out of high school in the Los Angeles area. Miley has a career 108-99 mark with a 4.07 ERA in 317 games (310 starts) with eight different teams since making his major league debut in 2011. This is his second go-round with the Reds. He was with the team in the 2020 and '21 seasons, going 12-10 with a 3.55 ERA in 177 1/3 innings over 34 starts (32 innings). Miley, 38, is expected to step into the starting rotation, perhaps as soon as Monday against the Guardians in Cleveland. --Field Level Media
