Box Office: Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning lands May 30 China release amid country's thawing trade tensions with US; check MI 7's performance
The release clearance comes amid a thaw in U.S. and China trade tensions following negotiations in Geneva, where both nations agreed to suspend and roll back certain tariffs, creating a more favorable environment for pop culture exchange. The new agreements appear to have opened the door for high-profile U.S. titles, with The Final Reckoning joining Disney's Thunderbolts, The Accountant 2 (May 16), Lilo & Stitch (May 23), and How to Train Your Dragon (June 13) on China's upcoming Hollywood release slate.
Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning had its world premiere in Tokyo on May 5 and was screened out of competition at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 14. The action-packed sequel stars Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett, with returning director Christopher McQuarrie. Originally titled Dead Reckoning Part Two, the film was retitled in November 2024 and is now staged as the final chapter in Ethan Hunt's decades-spanning journey.
Filmed across the UK, Malta, South Africa, and Norway, the movie faced production delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. It resumed in early 2024 and wrapped in November of the same year. With a reported budget of USD 300 to USD 400 million, Final Reckoning ranks as one of the most expensive films ever made. That makes it imperative for the film to earn north of USD 1 billion to be considered a success, something that would have been challenging without screens in the world's second-largest theatrical market.
China contributed USD 28.8 million to Dead Reckoning's total gross in 2023, about 8.5 percent of its global revenue. With improved diplomatic ties and Cruise's enduring popularity in the region, The Final Reckoning is expected to outperform its predecessor and add significant momentum to Paramount's international box office run.
As global interest builds, all eyes are on whether Ethan Hunt's last outing as the iconic IMF agent can achieve franchise-best numbers.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle's Presale Ticket Records Surpass Frozen II
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has been topping charts in terms of presale ticket bookings. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle movie part 1 – Akaza's Return has been bringing waves to the box office, much ahead of its release. The upcoming Japanese animated dark fantasy action film, which will officially open in the theatres on September 12 worldwide, is a direct sequel to the fourth season of the manga series. Within 24 hours, as the makers began their advance ticket sales, it surpassed many previous anime records. Based on the 'Infinity Castle" arc of the 2016–20 manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba by Koyoharu Gotouge, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle's makers have officially begun advance ticket sales in the United States before its official release. The first chapter of the trilogy has bagged the top position in terms of first-day ticket presales for an anime movie of all time, reported Deadline. The advance tickets are being sold from major US circuits, including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark. As per the same report, the preselling ticket booking has already recorded over USD 10 million, which, when converted to the Indian currency, amounts to Rs. 87.11 crore within 24 hours. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle's Record Surpasses Previous Set Milestones With this prolific collection, it has even surpassed the previous records of its prequels – Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2021) and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (2022). Not only this, the impressive figure has also overperformed the records of the popular animated film Frozen II. FYI: Mugen Train had collected USD 21.2 million (Rs 184 crore) on its opening weekend in 2021, while Jujutsu Kaisen 0 amasses USD 18 million (Rs 156 crore) the next year. If certain analyses by fans and critics are taken into account, the beginning of the final battle arc would seemingly cross even these stunning debuts. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle's Overwhelming Response Is Boosting Anime Content Jerramy Hainline, EVP of Fandango, opened up about the sheer excitement for the upcoming movie, revealed that the overwhelming response from the presales is a 'true testament to the power of the anime community," reported CBR. According to him, this has been a huge response from anime lovers, which will again help bring this content into theatres, 'so fans can experience it on the big screen." Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle will be released by Crunchyroll in both subtitled and English-dubbed formats. The special IMAX early screenings for Crunchyroll Mega and Ultimate Fan members will begin on September 9. ‘Wipe It': Woman Humiliated After Makeup Blocks Facial Scanner At Shanghai Airport
Last Updated: Shanghai airport's facial recognition scanners failed to identify a woman, who was later told to remove her makeup for an exact match on the passport photo. In the most bizarre incident, a Chinese woman was forced to wipe off her makeup at a Shanghai airport after authorities observed a facial recognition failure. According to a report by the New York Post, as the facial recognition scanners failed to identify the woman, she was asked to remove the makeup she was carrying for an accurate match on her passport. The humiliated passenger had to scrub off all her makeup in front of airport officials before she could be given a go-ahead signal. Originally posted on Chinese social media, the video of the woman was shared in India by a popular Instagram handle. In the clip, the embarrassed traveller is seen cleaning her face with wipes, while one of the airport workers scolds her from behind for the default. Humiliated Traveller Forced To Scrub Makeup At Airport 'Wipe everything off until you look like your passport photo. Why would you do your makeup like that? You are asking for trouble," the alleged employee demands, according to the New York Post report, forcing the woman to immediately take her makeup off so that she can be identified. The infamous clip is from May, when this lady was caught on camera using wipes to scrub off all her makeup while carrying a look of great disgust and disappointment with the authorities, who strictly imposed the airport guidelines on her and tried to get an exact match of the passport photo. How The Internet Reacted To The Incident The infamous clip racked up thousands of views and a flood of mixed comments on the internet. While some sympathised with the woman, others criticised her for wearing excessive cosmetics, which the airport machinery didn't approve of. 'She was already wiping her makeup off and was embarrassed enough. There was no need for you to keep going on like some naggy boomer," said one user, slamming the airport worker scolding her in the video. Someone else agreed, 'Poor girl should not be laughed at. The guard hurt her feelings. Not nice and not funny." 'This is cosplay. Not just regular makeup," said a less sympathetic user. 'It's not like she was able to walk around with a filter on in real life, right?" quipped another. Whether the woman was eventually cleared through the security is not known. But the airport scanner certainly didn't approve of her contouring, leading to dramatic scenes that could've easily been avoided. Black Myth Wukong gets a sequel: Watch Black Myth Zhong Kui trailer here
GameScience, the studio behind Black Myth: Wukong, has announced a follow-up title, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, during Opening Night Live 2025. While presenting on stage at Gamescom 2025, host Geoff Keighley introduced Zhong Kui as 'the ghost-catching god who wanders between hell and earth.' Keighley also emphasised that Black Myth: Wukong's journey is not finished, hinting that downloadable content (DLC) is still in development. According to a report by IGN India, GameScience described the game as: "Set against the backdrop of the classic Chinese folktale 'Zhong Kui Banishing Evil,' Black Myth: Zhong Kui is a single-player action role-playing game rooted in ancient Chinese fantasy. The game will deliver distinctive experiences and gameplay features that push our limits, while also bringing fresh ideas and necessary changes to address past flaws and regrets." Black Myth: Zhong Kui remains in the early stages of production, and a release window has not yet been confirmed. Notably, Black Myth: Wukong is the record-breaking action game that launched across PC and PlayStation 5 last year, selling ten million copies in just three days, as per IGN India. Expectations for its sequel are high now. Who is Zhong Kui? According to a report by Economic Times, Zhong Kui stands tall as one of the most vivid figures in Chinese mythology, a fearsome vanquisher of ghosts and demons, often depicted with a bushy black beard, bulging eyes, and a wrathful glare. His legend tells of a brilliant scholar who, despite topping the imperial examinations, was denied office due to his intimidating looks. Enraged, he took his own life, only to be appointed King of Ghosts in the underworld, tasked with hunting evil spirits and protecting the living. His imagery, often furious and sword-wielding, adorns doors and homes across China as a talisman to ward off evil and invite good fortune, the Economic Times reported. In folklore, Zhong Kui does not just fight monsters; he embodies justice itself, balancing wrath with righteousness. Some traditions also place him among the four judges of the underworld, alongside deities who oversee reincarnation, determine death's cause, and guard the Book of Life and Death, the very text Sun Wukong once defied in Journey to the West. Economic Times added that this mythology deepens the connection between Wukong and Zhong Kui, suggesting Game Science is building not just a series, but a shared universe of Chinese myth in gaming form.
