In a post on X in Hindi, Yogi Adityanath said, 'Humble tributes on the anniversary of the 'Quit India Movement' (August Kranti) to all the freedom fighters who awakened the spirit of freedom by creating nationwide public awareness against the oppressive policies of the British Empire! The glorious saga, sacrifice and martyrdom of the immortal martyrs who laid down their lives at the altar of freedom will continue to enhance the consciousness of the nation for ages. Jai Hind!' Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya also paid tributes to the martyrs. 'On 'Bhartiya Kranti Divas', we pay our tributes to the immortal martyrs who gave their all for freedom,' he said in a post on X in Hindi.

Choice should guide language policy for schools
The Tamil Nadu State Education Policy promises to 'build an inclusive, equitable, resilient, and future-ready school education'. It has backed the intent with radical initiatives and necessary funds: The state budget (2024–25) has earmarked a total of ₹44,042 crore for school education, which is 13.7% of the total state expenditure, among the highest in the country. The state, which pioneered mid-day meals in schools, now offers breakfast as well. The outcomes reveal their impact: The gross enrolment ratio is close to or above 95% at the primary, upper primary and secondary levels, with the retention rate exceeding 97%. Outreach initiatives and infrastructure interventions such as digital classrooms and science labs have helped to augment learning outcomes, especially among students from disadvantaged communities and homes. The focussed investment in school education, similar to the trajectory followed by South East Asian countries, has helped Tamil Nadu emerge as an industrial powerhouse. What, however, stands apart in this focussed push to improve educational standards is the government's language policy. Tamil Nadu has argued for a two-language formula, fearing that the Centre's backing for a three-language policy is merely a camouflage for Hindi imposition. Linguistic pride has been central to Tamil identity, and the Dravidian parties have historically been vigilant against attempts to privilege Hindi over other Indian languages. That said, the state needs to ask if it should reformulate its stand to offer more choices to its students. No language should be imposed on students; neither should a government limit the linguistic options available to students. And science, not political rhetoric and pride, must guide language policy. A rational policy could opt for a three-language policy — evidence suggests that children are quick to learn languages early. In the case of Tamil Nadu, the third language need not necessarily be Hindi; a bouquet of options, including other Dravidian languages and foreign languages, could be offered. A more liberal language policy will make Tamil Nadu's progressive education policy even better.

Govt to support treatment of critically ill poor patients: UP CM
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said the state government would bear the entire cost of treatment for critically ill poor and needy patients through the Chief Minister's Discretionary Fund. Responding to concerns over the high cost of treatment for critical illnesses, he instructed officials to ensure that such patients receive the best treatment at top hospitals without worrying about expenses. The CM directed the preparation of treatment cost estimates on a priority and their immediate submission to the state government so that timely financial assistance could be provided. He also instructed officials to handle public grievances with seriousness, sensitivity, and urgency, ensuring quick, high-quality, and satisfactory resolutions. Yogi stressed that no citizen should face harassment and warned of strict legal action against land grabbers. In one case, he directed officials to allot land on lease to a woman who had approached him with a request. The CM reached Gorakhpur on Saturday evening. On Sunday, he reviewed the preparedness of the irrigation department, PWD, and the municipal corporation to handle possible flood situations. Yogi directed continuous monitoring of embankments and river water levels in flood-prone areas, activation of flood posts, and arrangements to relocate affected villagers if required. The CM emphasised that the relief and rescue system must be in perfect order, leaving no room for complaints. He instructed the PWD officials to repair roads damaged by recent rain and asked the power corporation to address all electricity complaints promptly. He also ordered the deployment of additional pumping sets to drain stagnant water in low-lying areas.

Complaint alleges BJP MP Suresh Gopi is 'missing', student leader seeks probe

He alleged that Gopi has not visited the constituency in the last three months and has remained silent on the recent arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh. 'Even if Gopi was a leader who had completely concentrated on the Christian vote bank during the last Lok Sabha polls and gifted a golden crown to a church to woo the community votes, he kept mum when the nuns suffered humiliation and arrest in the BJP-ruled state,' Guruvayoor told PTI. The two nuns and a co-accused were arrested for alleged human trafficking and forced conversion and were released from Durg Central Jail in Chhattisgarh on August 1 after a court granted them bail, saying the case was based on 'mere suspicion.' The Catholic nuns, Preethy Mary and Vandana Francis, were welcomed outside the jail by several leaders from Kerala, including LDF MPs. The KSU leader further charged that Gopi was unreachable even when authorities sought his presence for inaugurating a major central government project implemented under the Thrissur Corporation. 'The union minister was inaccessible not just to ordinary people of the constituency, even those in responsible positions in the state could not reach him,' the KSU leader alleged. Gokul said he sent the missing complaint to the East Police via email on Sunday morning and plans to submit a hard copy at the police station on Monday. He added that the KSU would launch a poster campaign across the district starting Monday, demanding action to locate the 'missing union minister.' With PTI inputs
