Boycott quota ordinance opponents, says Telangana CM Revanth Reddy to BCs

Time of India2 days ago
HYDERABAD: In a politically charged statement, chief minister A Revanth Reddy Saturday urged Backward Classes (BC) leaders to socially boycott individuals who challenge the Congress govt's proposed ordinance providing 42% reservations for BCs in local bodies.
Revanth also said the community must stand united to defend what he called a long-overdue and historic measure.
Meeting a delegation of BC association leaders led by National BC Welfare Association president Jajula Srinivas Goud, Revanth said: "If anyone goes to court or sends someone to challenge the ordinance, the BC community should announce their social boycott. The BC community must make this clear."

Revanth assured that the Congress govt would hire top lawyers from Delhi to defend the ordinance in court and called on BC leaders to act as a shield for the govt.
CM slams BRS for ignoring BC community
The delegation, including BC leaders from various political backgrounds, TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud and a couple of ministers, met the CM at his residence and thanked him for the state cabinet's decision to go ahead with the ordinance.
Revanth accused former BC ministers in the K Chandrasekhar Rao cabinet, including Gangula Kamalakar, V Srinivas Goud, and Talasani Srinivas Yadav, of opposing the same BC quota they once ignored.

'When the BRS govt passed the Panchayat Raj Act in 2018 capping total reservations at 50%, these very BC leaders were ministers. Now, at KCR's behest, they are opposing our move to increase BC quota. What more can I do? I'll call a cabinet meeting even at midnight for BC welfare,' he announced.
Revanth also launched a scathing attack on BJP leaders accusing them of lacking sincerity on BC welfare.
The CM reminded that the local body elections were postponed to accommodate the 42% quota and that the high court has given a one-month deadline to finalise reservations. He said a presentation would soon be made to Congress and INDIA bloc MPs on the issue.

Rahul Gandhi to appear before MP/MLA court in Lucknow today

: Congress MP from Rae Bareli and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will appear before the MP/MLA court in Lucknow on Tuesday in a case related to disparaging remarks allegedly made by him about a face-off between Indian and Chinese soldiers. The comments were allegedly made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra on December 16, 2022. Congress MP from Rae Bareli and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi (File photo) Advocate Vivek Tewari had filed the complaint against Rahul Gandhi on behalf of Uday Shankar Srivastava, a former director of the Border Roads Organisation with a rank equivalent to an Army colonel, in January 2023. Rahul Gandhi's alleged statement was derogatory towards the Army and hurt the sentiments of the armed forces, according to the complainant. Additional chief judicial magistrate Alok Verma, Lucknow, had earlier directed Rahul Gandhi to appear before the court on March 24, 2025, in the defamation case filed against him. Gandhi had challenged the additional CJM's order, passed on February 11, 2025, in the high court but did not get relief. Dismissing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's petition, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court held that the right to freedom of speech and expression does not extend to making defamatory statements against the Indian Army. Gandhi had challenged the summons by a local court in connection with a case related to his alleged remarks on the Indian Army. A single-judge bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi on June 2, 2025, passed the order, rejecting Rahul Gandhi's petition challenging the additional CJM's order. 'No doubt, Article 19(1) of the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of speech and expression, this freedom is subject to the reasonable restrictions and it does not include the freedom to make statements which are defamatory to any person or defamatory to the Indian Army,' the high court observed. The high court dismissal of his petition paved the way for Rahul Gandhi to face trial in the lower court.

Ludhiana: MP Warring protests arrest of party leader

The arrest of Congress Zila Parishad member Kuldeep Singh Baddowal by Mullapur police late Sunday night triggered a major political showdown, with senior Congress leaders, including Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, reaching the Dakha police station and staged a protest against the arrest. Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring reached the Dakha police station and staged a protest against the arrest. (HT Photo) Baddowal was arrested for allegedly threatening social worker Amandeep Amni. The complainant had alleged that Baddowal, a resident of Baddowal village, had been issuing life threats repeatedly, including via social media, and was seen flashing a weapon in a video posted online. The police said the video formed the basis of immediate action and led to his arrest. He was produced in court and has been sent to one-day police remand. However, Congress leaders have questioned the timing and motive behind the arrest. According to them, the viral video is at least four to five years old and was originally posted on TikTok. 'This is nothing but political vendetta,' said congress leader Captain Sandeep Sandhu, who reached the police station soon after learning of Baddowal's arrest. 'If the complaint is not cancelled, we will gherao the police station,' he added. Tensions escalated in the evening when MP Raja Warring arrived at the Dakha police station at around 8:30 PM and staged a sit-in along with scores of party workers. Warring accused the police of acting under pressure from the AAP-led Punjab government and alleged that the Congress leader was manhandled in custody. He raised slogans inside the police station and targeted the DSP, calling the entire episode a deliberate attempt to intimidate political opponents. Warring further claimed that the same police had failed to act in cases involving petrol bomb and bullet attacks in Baddowal, but were quick to arrest a Congress leader over a year-old video. 'This is selective targeting. If justice is not served, Congress will take to the streets,' warned Warring. Congress supporters camped outside the police station throughout the evening. The sit-in was eventually lifted after senior police officials, including DSP Indrajit Singh Boparai and SP Ramninder Deol, met the protesting leaders and assured them of a fair investigation. 'The officers have assured us that any further action will be taken only after an impartial probe, and that even the concerned officer will be held accountable if found guilty,' Warring told reporters after the protest was called off.

Pakistan to create new paramilitary force ahead of protests by Imran Khan's party

The announcement came after PTI party said it would stage nationwide protests starting on Aug 5, the second anniversary of Imran Khan's arrest ISLAMABAD: Pakistan said on Monday it was creating a national paramilitary force, prompting concern among opposition parties and human rights groups that it could be used as a tool of political repression. The move turns an existing paramilitary force deployed on Pakistan's northwestern border with Afghanistan into a national security force that will be called the Federal Constabulary, state minister for the interior Talal Chaudhry told a press conference in the eastern city of Faisalabad. Its new duties will include internal security, riot control and counter-terrorism, according to a copy of the amended law reported by the local Dunya News TV. The announcement came after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of former jailed PM Imran Khan said it would stage nationwide protests starting on Aug 5, the second anniversary of his arrest. Several such protests since his Aug 2023 arrest have turned violent, in some cases paralysing the capital Islamabad for days. 'This will be a new force. This will be a stronger force. We need this force for internal security,' Chaudhry said, adding that President Asif Ali Zardari had already approved amendments in the law introducing changes in the paramilitary force. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The new force replaces the Frontier Constabulary (FC), whose cadres were previously recruited only from tribes in the northwestern province, Chaudhry said. Training of the new force will bring it into line with other national law enforcement agencies, he added. Khan's party spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari said the changes should be subject to parliamentary discussion. The new force 'should not be used as a gimmick to silence political opponents, as has been previously witnessed when the government applied such laws against a large number of the PTI leadership and supporters,' he said. His concern was echoed by Haris Khalique, secretary of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, an independent body. 'We are alarmed by the changes being made to the security and law enforcement structure of the country without any debate in parliament,' Khalique said. REUTERS
