Former hospital consultant jailed for multiple child sexual offences
Dr Matthew Isles, who worked as an ear, nose and throat specialist prior to his arrest in February this year, had built up a 'staggeringly vast' collection over five years, Stoke Crown Court heard on Wednesday.
Judge Richard McConaghy jailed the former consultant, who worked at the Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital, Stafford, and had a 22-year career in the Armed Forces before that, for three years and 10 months in relation to 13 offences.
He had previously admitted two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, voyeurism, three counts of making indecent images of children, possession of a paedophile manual, three counts of distributing indecent images of children, possession of prohibited images of children and two counts of possessing extreme pornographic images.
The judge told the 53-year-old, who wore a dark suit and a blue striped tie in the dock and carried a large black bag, that submissions by his barrister Phil Bradley KC that he should be given a suspended sentence were 'optimistic'.
He said: 'Each and every image depicts a real child suffering real sexual abuse, some of it of the most depraved kind imaginable.'
Prosecution counsel Hunter Gray told the court that Isles engaged in 'sexually explicit conversation of a grooming nature' with an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old boy on a gay dating site between January 25 and February 6 this year.
While he initially ended the chat after finding out the age of the boy he believed he was speaking to, saying he did not want to be sent to prison, Isles later continued the conversation which involved chatting about 'hooking up'.
When officers visited Isles' address in Whiston, near Cheadle, Staffordshire, on February 10 to arrest him, a large quantity of items were seized including more than 90,000 images and videos on different devices.
He also had voyeuristic images in a folder called 'Spycam' featuring him and a female he had filmed.
Mr Gray said while the interaction was consensual, the woman did not know she was being filmed and did not consent to being recorded.
Also on his devices were a paedophile manual with instructions on how to abuse children and images that had been distributed on at least three different platforms.
Mr Gray said there was a 'high volume' of images found, including 1,978 category A images, 1,317 category B images, 2,134 category C images and 459 prohibited images of children, with many more that had not been categorised.
Isles had also attempted to engage in sexual communication with a 15-year-old female, which Judge McConaghy described as 'utterly calculated grooming'.
In police interview, Isles admitted having an 'addiction to sex, pornography and child abuse material and an addiction to collecting child sex abuse images' over the space of five years, Mr Gray said.
Defending, Mr Bradley said Isles had made efforts to address his behaviour.
He said: 'The criminal behaviour that this defendant is responsible for is reprehensible and seen through the eyes of disgust by right-thinking members of society.
'This man, by his own actions, has authored his own downfall. His is a catastrophic fall from grace.
'His career is in tatters, he simply cannot go back. The impact of his offending is felt by his family and friends who continue to support him.
'Within a relatively short period of time, five years, he descended into a dark hole, a dark area, but it seems he kept digging.
'He pleaded guilty at the first opportunity knowing the offences to which he pleaded are indeed serious.
'Some of the material was plainly disgusting, there is no getting behind that. Real children and real people were involved and concerned.'
Judge McConaghy said Isles, who waved at a woman in the public gallery as he was sent down, must serve half of his sentence in custody before he can be released on licence.
He said: 'When police looked at your devices, there was an enormous amount of child abuse images as well as a paedophile manual.
'There were also pseudo images of children. By your own admission, you have been collecting them for a number of years.
'There was a staggeringly vast quantity of images.'
A sexual harm prevention order without limit of time was also imposed.
The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) said in February that it was fully co-operating with the police in their investigation and has since confirmed that Isles is no longer one of its employees.
Detective Inspector Alex Glover, from Staffordshire Police's public protection unit, said: 'Isles sought out and hoarded images of the most horrific abuse of children.
'The continued circulation of child sexual abuse material normalises abuse and incentivises the creation of new content.
'We have worked closely with NHS organisations and conducted a thorough investigation into the offences committed by Isles.'

Frantic search for seven-month-old boy kidnapped during attack on mom outside store
A seven-month-old baby is missing after being kidnapped from his mother's truck as she tried to change his diaper outside a California sporting goods store. A frantic search is underway from Emmanuel Haro after he was wrenched from his mother Rebecca Haro, who was knocked unconscious during the attack. Haro was running an errand at a Big 5 retail store in Yucaipa on Thursday when she says a stranger suddenly attacked her from behind as she prepared to change her son's diaper, according to KTLA 5 News. When she regained consciousness with a black eye and no memory of what had happened, she quickly realized her infant son was nowhere to be found. The family is desperately pleading for help in bringing Emmanuel home, as search teams and tracking dogs have yet to uncover any trace of the missing infant. 'I'm begging you please, if you know anything, I'm begging you please bring him back,' Haro begged the public, as reported by CBS News. Haro had been watching her son and stepson at football practice when one of them needed a mouthguard, prompting her to leave the local stadium around 7pm to pick one up - and change Emmanuel's diaper. The mom says the last thing she remembers is someone greeting her in Spanish before she was knocked out in the parking lot. 'I was going to get the diaper and somebody said, "Hola,"' the mother told KTLA News. 'I don't remember anything since. I woke up here on the floor and I didn't see Emmanuel.' With a fresh black eye, the mother was overcome by a wave of crippling fear as she realized Emmanuel was missing. 'I checked all around my truck,' Rebecca told the outlet. 'And I ran into Big 5, and I asked the lady if she saw a baby or someone with a baby. She said no.' 'He's a happy boy,' she added. 'He was a healthy baby, he was crawling, he was kicking, he was playing with his toys. Whoever took our son, please give him back.' Officers with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene just before 8pm, where they brought along additional search tools, including K9 scent-tracking dogs to track either the child or a suspect down. 'Everybody came,' Rebecca told KTLA. 'The dogs, the helicopters.' Despite exhaustive search efforts, the family remains both confused and fearful, insisting they have no enemies and cannot understand who would want to harm them. 'Whoever took my son, please return him,' Emmanuel's father, Jake Haro, told the outlet. 'We just want him back. We won't do anything to you. Just give us our son. Keep him safe, don't hurt him, make sure you feed him and change him,' he added in tears. Rebecca echoed her husband's plea, adding: 'If you know anything, please come forward or take him to the cops. Please come and bring my son back. I'm begging you.' On Friday evening, friends and family gathered outside the sporting goods store to begin their own search efforts, armed with flyers they had prepared. Emmanuel is described as weighing approximately 21 pounds, standing about 24 inches tall, with brown hair, brown eyes, and a noticeable cross-eye. He was last seen wearing a black Nike onesie. Authorities have not released a suspect description, as the case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information about Emmanuel's whereabouts or details related to the case is urged to call 911 or contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Dispatch at 909-387-8313.

Premier League opener halted after Antoine Semenyo reports racist abuse
A man was ejected from Anfield after reports of racial abuse directed at Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo during the season's opening Premier League game against Liverpool. Match referee Anthony Taylor paused play in the 29th minute after Semenyo accused a spectator of racist abuse. An anti-discrimination message was read out to the Anfield crowd, and it is understood that police officers went into the referee's room at half-time. Merseyside Police said an investigation is under way after the 47-year-old man's identity was confirmed and he was removed from the ground. Chief Inspector Kev Chatterton, the match commander for the Liverpool v Bournemouth game, said: "Merseyside Police will not tolerate hate crime of any form. "We take incidents like this very seriously, and in cases like this we will be proactively seeking football banning orders, with the club, against those responsible." He added: "There is no place for racism and it is vital that anyone who witnesses such an offence reports it to stewards, or the police immediately, so we can take the necessary action like we did this evening. "As with all matches, we work very closely with both Liverpool and Everton FC to ensure the safety of the public, and the players." A spokesperson for Liverpool said the club was "aware of an allegation of racist abuse made during our Premier League game against Bournemouth". The Liverpool spokesperson said: "We condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society, or football. "The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged is incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully." After the incident, Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down at Anfield before Liverpool went on to eventually win the contest 4-2. Bournemouth captain Adam Smith told Sky Sports News afterwards: "It shouldn't be happening. I don't know how Ant's played on to be honest and come up with those goals. It's totally unacceptable. "Something needs to be done. Taking the knee isn't having an effect. We're supporting him and hopefully he'll be OK. "I wanted him to react because that's what I would have done, but this shows what type of man he come up with those goals showed the type of guy he is. "To be fair the Liverpool players were very supportive as well towards Antoine and the rest of the team. It was handled in the right way but... so angry. "I don't know what else we can do. No one's getting it. I don't know what to say anymore. I just feel for Ant... shocking." The Premier League said in a statement that its "on-field anti-discrimination protocol" had been followed and the incident "will now be fully investigated". "We offer our full support to the player and both clubs," it added. "Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all." The Football Association said it was "concerned" about the allegation of racism towards Semenyo and that it would ensure "appropriate action" would be taken. The incident comes two days after Tottenham Hotspur player Mathys Tel faced racist abuse online following a missed penalty in his team's UEFA Super Cup victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Shady past of Virgin Atlantic passenger who threatened to 'gang rape' stewardess
Salman Iftikhar launched a prolonged and vile verbal assault on a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant on a plane for Lahore, Pakistan, and the dad was jailed last week A yob who threatened to gang rape a Virgin Atlantic stewardess has had several brushes with the law, it has today emerged. Salman Iftikhar was sentenced to 15 months in jail last week after admitting making threats to kill and racially aggravated harassment. The judge took into account Iftikhar's six previous convictions, including a common assault, a record she described as "lengthy and appalling". These six previous convictions have arisen from 15 offences over the years. And now further details of these offences have come to light - days after Iftikhar, 37, began his time at HM Prison Brixton in south London. It is his first time behind bars despite his two counts of common assault in 2004, drink driving in 2008 and driving with excess alcohol that same year among other crimes. In 2021, father-of-three Iftikhar was fined £3,000 after he was caught drunk behind the wheel. When pulled over, police also found him in possession of cannabis. Iftikhar, who was two times over the legal limit, subsequently pleaded guilty to drink driving, cannabis possession and failing to stop a vehicle when required to by a constable. Neighbours in Iver, Buckinghamshire, this week said police had also been called to his six-bedroom home dozens of times in recent years. Iftikhar had lived there with one of his two wives - Erum Salman, who is the mother to his three children. She was described as a "nice lady" by neighbours, who branded Iftikhar "not very friendly" this week. "There's been so many rowdy late night parties that have ended up in fights in the early hours of the morning. At one point it felt like the police were here almost every day," said one neighbour who also described Iftikhar as "often spaced out". The father of three kept a range of expensive cars - from a Range Rover, Bentley and Rolls-Royce - on his driveway at the time of his arrest. He and his UK-based wife together the pair run a London-based staffing company which provides training to businesses working in customer service and manufacturing. Yet, according to those known to the Buckinghamshire couple, the pair had a "rocky marriage and would argue quite a bit". Daily Mail reports Iftikhar diversified his skillset in recent years into "exposure to cryptocurrencies," a project likely to prove tricky to manage from his cell in jail. When he was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court, a judge described the episode as "a sustained incident" and felt she could only impose a custodial term. Ben Walker-Nolan, defending, had said his client "had a long-standing drug and alcohol problem which he has not addressed for many years".
