Operation Shanela continues to be a crime curbing tool
The operation kicked off with a suspect tracing initiative, during which detectives apprehended 117 wanted individuals for a range of serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm , common assault, rape, house robbery, carjacking, housebreaking, theft, business burglary, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of stolen property, among others.
On June 26, multidisciplinary teams deployed across the district left no stone unturned, conducting a stringent roadblock along Moshoeshoe Road to ensure full compliance with road traffic regulations. Motorists found violating the law were issued hefty fines on the spot.
The roadblock was led by Sedibeng District Commissioner, Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho, accompanied by Sebokeng SAPS Station Commander, Brigadier Thembekile Kubone.
Reporting on the success of the operation, police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane stated:
'We arrested 14 illegal immigrants, one suspect for possession of drugs, and another for possession of an unlicensed firearm. Additionally, two illegal shebeens were closed down, and 10 AARTO fines amounting to R5,000 were issued.'
Sergeant Mokhachane also confirmed that 750 individuals were searched, 360 vehicles were inspected withc12 of them undergoing further testing, and 14 identified premises were raided.
'Malls, ATMs, spaza shops, taxi ranks, and second-hand goods stores were visited, and one stolen vehicle was recovered,' she added.
An Imbizo was held in Kanana, Sector 2, Sebokeng, to address community concerns about crime in the area. Key issues raised included poor visibility due to non-functioning street lights and the need for quicker police response times.
Major General Mukwevho extended heartfelt thanks to all stakeholders involved in the operation, commending their dedication and teamwork. She also urged officers to exercise patience in their duties:
'Patience is a virtue. Being able to wait calmly and not get upset easily is a valuable and admirable quality. Those who possess patience are more likely to make sound judgments.'

Here is how many Operation Shanela cases resulted in conviction
The police ministry recently stated that millions had been arrested under Operation Shanela, but convictions were slow to materialise. Police across South Africa have been rounding up suspects en masse, but only a fraction of these arrests have resulted in convictions. Operation Shanela recorded more than 14 200 arrests in the past week, adding to the massive number of suspects detained in the last two years. However, the police ministry recently revealed that just less than 6% of Operation Shanela arrests have led to convictions. Operation Shanela in July Operation Shanela focuses on contact and trio crimes such as murder, rape, robbery and assault, as well as drug and alcohol related crimes. Between 21 and 27 July, 172 suspects were arrested in connection with murder cases, 138 for attempted murder and 170 for rape. Additionally, 1 598 were arrested for assault GBH and 1 376 were arrested for possession of drugs. Drunk drivers accounted for 672 arrests, while 324 people were arrested for dealing narcotics. Operation Shanela was launched in May 2023 and the police ministry revealed via a written response to a parliamentary question that 3.68 million cases had been registered since. However, the number of convictions secured in that time amounted to just 215 233. The average number of cases opened per day over a 24 month period would be just over 5 000, while the conviction rate is just under 300 per day. Western Cape led the way with 54 000 convictions, followed by Gauteng with 37 400. Delayed court processes Asked for the breakdown based on gender, the ministry stated that performing such an analysis would be 'tedious' as it involved the scrutiny of physical dockets held by multiple divisions. 'This exercise will take long to complete, as a result service delivery might be adversely affected taking into consideration all types of crimes involved and may result in the disruption in service delivery,' the written response read. The portfolio committee on correctional services last week heard how slow court processes were leading to an overcrowding of prisons. The committee heard how 57 800 inmates were currently being held while trials were ongoing. Correctional services officials listed the reasons why court proceedings were regularly postponed for those both remanded and out on bail. These included repeated changing of legal representatives, the absence of witnesses and co-accused, as well as the loss of court records, among others. NPA success rates African Criminal Justice Reform (ACJR) in a previous report for the Dullah Omar Institute outlined how prosecutors approached criminal matters. 'The prosecution anticipates the defence of the accused, and weighs up whether or not the prosecution will be able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt,' states the report. In the National Prosecuting Authority's 2024 annual report, it listed an 84% success rate for murder prosecutions and a 72% success rate for gender-based violence incidents reported to police. 'The very high success rates of cases which are prosecuted… suggest that reasonable prospects are interpreted as being an almost certainty of conviction,' the ACJR report states. Goodwood drug bust nets R54. 3 million worth of Tik and heroin

Image: Supplied Two foreign nationals are expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrate's Court on Tuesday after police seized a total of R54.3 million worth of drugs. The Western Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, said the bust comes after an intelligence-driven operation in the area. 'At approximately 1.45pm, members attached to Operation Restore operationalised information which led them to a residence situated at Molteno Street in Goodwood where they initiated a search of the premises. During the search, the members discovered and seized 6kg of heroin, which was found in a cupboard in one of the rooms,' Pojie said. The heroin and tik seized during the raid at a home in Goodwood. Image: SAPS A 32-year-old Tanzanian national who was an occupant of the room was arrested and charged for dealing in heroin with an estimated street value go about R1 million. As police officers extended the search to another bedroom, they found more heroin. 'Officers found 100 grams of heroin with an estimated value of R16,000. This led to the arrest of a 28-year-old Burundi national for the possession of drugs,' Pojie said. He said the officers continued to search the home and came across more contraband. 'The members expanded the search, leading to the discovery of 145kg of tik and 16kg of heroin found in the roof of the residence. The estimated street value is R53.3 million, bringing the total value of the discovery to R54.3million,' Pojie said. He said the investigation in this matter is being conducted by the narcotics section located within the Provincial Organised Crime Unit detectives. Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General (Adv) Thembisile Patekile welcomed the arrests and praised the members for their efforts to rid the streets of the scourge of drug abuse and trafficking. Parties call for suspension of Bitou municipal manager amid corruption claims
Opposition parties in the Bitou municipality have opened a case of corruption and contempt of court against municipal manager Mbulelo Memani. The ANC, Plett Democratic Congress (PDC) and the PA laid the criminal complaint against him at the Plettenberg Bay police station. They accused Memani of 'defiance of a high court order and alleged misuse of public funds for personal and political gain'. In a joint statement, the parties claimed to have evidence that a municipal official had paid R800,000 to the municipality on Memani's behalf. ANC councillor Sandiso Gcabayi accused Memani of creating a high-profile post for Allen Paulse without following recruitment procedures. 'In December 2024, Memani submitted a new organigram to the Bitou municipality for council approval. This new organigram included the new position for performance management, monitoring and evaluation. This position was [allegedly] specifically created for Allen Paulse,' Gcabayi said.
