I'm a beauty writer who's swapped my go-to £28 mascara for one that's under £10 - and my lashes look better than ever
I am a Charlotte Tilbury make-up lover. Look in my bathroom and you'll find the Flawless Filter Foundation; the Contour, Blush and Highlighter Wands; about five Pillow Talk Lipsticks and glittery Beautifying Eye Shadow Palettes galore.
Until recently, you would have found the £28 Legendary Lashes Mascara too. It has been my go-to since the age of 18: smudge-proof; long-wear and super-volumising, with just one quick sweep lasting all day.
That was until a few months ago when, having run out of my trusty Legendary Lashes, I needed to pick up a new mascara on Kensington High Street. Sadly, my bank account was not in a position to splurge £28 on a mascara (payday was two days away, okay?) so I thought I'd pop into Boots for a cheap one to bridge the gap.
The mascara in question? NYX's £9.50 Worth the Hype Mascara. My plan was to use it for two days, then shove it into my bathroom cupboard as an emergency back-up. Except after using it for two months, I can safely say it is the best mascara I have ever used – and a quick scour of online reviews shows plenty of shoppers agree.

My main issues with budget mascaras are: a) having to apply three layers to get any length and volume and b) near-immediate smudging, so I look like a panda by the time I get into work. I'm happy to say Worth the Hype Mascara delivers serious oomph with just one layer and honestly, does not budge. I'm not talking 'lasts a few hours', I'm talking 'lasts an entire day at Glastonbury / sweaty workout class/ tears at my friend's engagement party'.
Don't just take my word for it. NYX's product has hundreds of five-star reviews across online retailers calling it the 'best mascara out there', with one writing: 'It performs like high-end mascara for a fraction of the price… my lashes have never looked so good.' Hear, hear.
This is the formula I'll be sticking to going forward (although I may well use the £18 I save on more Charlotte Tilbury products, TBH). But if you're looking for a slightly less dramatic budget buy for your lashes, I've listed some great, natural options below. Happy shopping!

Rihanna 'set to tour again after cancelling London dates' as she prepares to welcome third child
Rihanna is reportedly set to tour again after cancelling a string of dates in London which were meant to take place this summer. The singer, 37, who is currently preparing to welcome her third child with her partner ASAP Rocky, has now rearranged the shows. According to reports, she had been rumoured to be planning a six-concert residency in London in July to mark her return to music. It was later reported that Rihanna pulled out of the proposed gigs at West Ham's stadium in a secret meeting last week in March, just before they were set to be publicly confirmed. The tour is now set to be back on for 2026, The Sun reports, which will mark her first UK shows since 2016. A source told the newspaper: 'But Rihanna and her team are now confident they can make it work for next year.' They added: 'The dates will also coincide with the tenth anniversary of [her last album] Anti, and fans can expect to hear her new music too. 'Rihanna might be pregnant with her third baby but she is the ultimate working mum and has the support of her partner ASAP Rocky.' Daily Mail has contacted Rihanna's representatives for comment. Music insiders previously claimed to The Telegraph that Rihanna was lining up shows at London Stadium for July 4 and 5, with other possible concerts set for July 8, 9, 11 and 12. A second source told the publication that her promoters were 'holding' the arena - formerly the Olympic Stadium - for her, with preparations in the advance planning stages. MAFS 2026: Expert John Aiken warns new brides are ready to unleash drama - as season 12 kicks off filming: 'They'll hold everyone to account'
Married At First Sight expert John Aiken has promised the upcoming 2026 season will be one of the most dramatic in the show's history. Speaking exclusively to Daily Mail, John, 55, teased that filming is already delivering fiery scenes and will feature a line-up of powerful, outspoken brides who will 'hold everyone to account' and are not afraid to stir the pot. 'I would say what we've got is a cast full of very powerful, opinionated, outspoken women who are really going to hold everyone in the experiment to account,' he said. 'Particularly the women - you're going to need to look out for them this year, and not just how they are with their partners, but particularly how they work in the sisterhood.' The veteran relationship expert, who has been with the hit social experiment since its debut, said there's a freshness in this year's line-up. We just give the audience something that's a little bit different from the season before.' 'We don't do it to get a Logie. We do it because it's fun, it's exciting, and a lot of people watch it,' he said. 'At the end of the day, we're very happy with the numbers we get every year—that's the real prize.' He believes the lack of Logies love comes down to voting habits. 'It all comes down to who's prepared to vote. Often the shows that win have the people that are prepared to get online and vote. With MAFS, while we have a lot of people watching and committed to it, they don't vote,' he said. Over the years, many MAFS participants have been left off the Logies guest list—a point of frustration for some—but Aiken insists it's out of his hands. 'I would say what we've got is a cast full of very powerful, opinionated, outspoken women who are really going to hold everyone in the experiment to account,' he said 'It's a privilege to be invited, but it's completely out of my hands and out of the hands of the talent. Every year there's a possibility people will miss out,' he said. And even if the show did win, he's not sure letting a bride or groom take the stage would be a wise move. 'You'd have no idea what they're going to say,' he laughed. 'That's the thing about the MAFS cast—they're very brave and put themselves out there, but you never know what they'll do once filming wraps.' Despite the chaos, Aiken remains proud of the show's ability to create real connections. 'The real pleasure is that Rhi and Jeff are still together and going strong. It just shows that this experiment can work and people do get the fairytale,' he said. As for what fans can expect from him this year, Aiken promises more of his signature no-nonsense approach at the dinner parties. 'My role's very clear now—I call out bad behaviour and hold people to account. I've become more direct and blunt with my feedback because the behaviour is becoming more extreme,' he said. 'We don't do it to get a Logie, we do it because it's fun, it's exciting and a lot of people watch it. The real prize is the huge audience engagement we get every year,' Aiken explained of the MAFS Logies snub His advice to this year's participants is simple: stay curious. 'Come in with an open mind rather than a long list of deal breakers. This is a marathon, not a sprint. 'You've got to give it the full 10 weeks, because people do fall in love—sometimes when they least expect it.' With production already underway in Sydney, Aiken said viewers are in for a treat when the explosive thirteenth season premieres next year. 'It's going to be big, it's going to be unpredictable—and you never know what they're going to say,' he said. Married At First Sight returns to Channel Nine in 2026.
