The new credit card will include chances to earn toward member-exclusive experiences – such as trackside access at racing events and off-the-grid EV excursions.
Taking cues from the travel industry, General Motors plans to relaunch its credit card under a new lender and change how points can be accrued and used on automotive purchases.
The new card provides customers more ways to earn and redeem GM Rewards points on new vehicles, services, parts and accessories, according to the company. And starting May 20, GM employees, retirees, dealership employees and suppliers eligible for vehicle discounts will be able to use GM Rewards points on top of that discount.
The card allows customers to earn up to 10 times the points on eligible GM purchases, broken down by seven times the points for every $1 spent when using the GM Rewards Mastercard, plus up to three times the points for being a GM Rewards member. All other purchases qualify for three times the points, which GM said can also be redeemed on GM Financial account balances.
The automaker has more than 13 million GM Rewards members, the company said. GM has had a branded credit card since 1992.

Changing rewards, adding ways to earn
Members of the company rewards program on average purchase vehicles with 5% higher manufacturer-suggested retail prices than nonmembers, visit GM dealerships twice as often as nonmembers and typically repurchase GM vehicles almost three years sooner than a nonmember, according to Ralph Darmo, head of GM Rewards.
'The value of those members is why GM has made the decision to invest in those members,' Darmo said. 'We're making the program better.'
Prior to joining GM, Darmo managed the Delta SkyMiles credit card and then managed the GM credit card when it was branded with Goldman Sachs.
One of the main changes is simplifying the program, streamlining the various separate branded rewards to one, Darmo said. Instead of Cadillac Rewards, Chevy Rewards, Buick Rewards, GMC Rewards and My Rewards, starting May 20, all of that will be lumped into My Rewards.
Details of changes to GM rewards
The goal is to improve the experience for dealerships as well as customers, Darmo said, because of the confusion over whether or not a GMC Rewards member could apply points on a Buick purchase, for example.
'You will get more points when you buy GM under the new program. We're also removing some of the restrictions — there won't be earn caps, there's no redemption caps, there's no exclusion on vehicles anymore, and the points are universal — the points can be used across all GM brands for a new GM vehicle or a certified pre-owned vehicle,' he said.
In addition, Darmo said GM rewards points can be shared not just with another member at your address; points can be transferred to any other GM Rewards member regardless of where they live.
The GM Rewards loyalty program now works through GM Rewards Mastercard, serviced by Barclays US Consumer Bank. The Delaware-based bank has a broad portfolio of co-branded credit cards including JetBlue, Old Navy, Gap, Frontier Airlines and Carnival Cruise Lines.
In addition to purchases at GM dealerships, the credit card also allows customers to gain and redeem points on digital services like most OnStar plans and Super Cruise, the hands-free driver assistance technology. Eventually, GM hopes to ensure the points can be used on electric-vehicle charging costs.
Existing cardmembers should use them until Aug. 25, GM said, and can expect their new, replacement Barclays cards later this summer, along with activation instructions.
Darmo also added that the card includes member-exclusive experiences — such as trackside access at racing events and off-the-grid EV excursions.
Later this year, GM and Barclays plan to launch the GM Business Mastercard, specifically for business customers, with a higher earn rate on GM purchases and expanded redemption options.

Earlier this year, Ford earned an ignominious distinction after it issued its 89th recall of the year before July. The Blue Oval shattered the record General Motors set in 2014 when it issued 77 recalls in the whole year. Last month during its second-quarter earnings call, Ford said that it is taking the issue seriously. "We are not satisfied with the current level of recalls or the number of vehicles impacted. We are working to reduce the cost of these recalls," said Chief Operating Officer Kuman Galhorta. Related: Ford Motor Co. is still haunted by this one, costly issue But the company also downplayed the issue in some ways. Ford says that about a third of its recalls over the past three years have been software-related, and over-the-air recalls cost 95% less than physical ones. So even though Ford is breaking recall records this year, the issues are less costly to fix. Galhorta also said that the majority of its recalls are "tied to vehicles engineered several years ago before we made all the robust process changes across our industrial system." But the latest Ford recall shows that the problem may not be explained away so easily. On August 11, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association announced that Ford is issuing a recall for certain 2023-2025 F-150 vehicles equipped with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy duty axle with a 3/4 float axle design. The agency says the rear axle hub bolt may fatigue and eventually break, which could cause the vehicle to roll away, even when when in park, if the parking brake isn't also engaged. Ford does have a fix for this issue, and owners will be notified of the change via mail in phases beginning August 18, 2025, through May 22, 2026. The Ford F-150 is the country's most popular pickup, but the NHTSA estimates that just about 1% of the vehicles have the defect. Ford says that tariff costs will shave about $2 billion off its bottom line this year, but if Ford doesn't get its recall issues under control, its tariff expenses could pale in comparison. Ford just announced that is recalling 2021-2024 Bronco Sport vehicles, 2020-2022 Escape vehicles, and 2019-2024 Kuga vehicles due to cracked fuel injectors that could leak fuel into the engine and increase the risk of fire. More than 694,000 vehicles could have the problem, so it's calling for a field service action that will cost Ford about $570 million. This was reflected in its second-quarter results but won't affect the company's full year EBIT. FSAs account for about 40% of Ford's warranty costs. The other 60% covers bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranty coverage. Last week, the NHTSA announced that Ford is recalling 312,120 vehicles in the U.S due to a brake assist issue that could cause the loss of that function. CARMEL, Calif – GM brought some Detroit muscle to the rarified air of Monterey Car Week — with a twist. While the Corvette nameplate falls under the Chevrolet brand, more and more it stands out on its own. At The Quail event in Carmel Valley, where multi-million dollar Paganis are displayed alongside priceless gullwing Mercedes SL coupes (and the parking lot is a show in and of itself), Corvette showed off two concepts that showed where the sportscar is headed in the future. The CX and its racing-inspired twin the CX-R, evoke supercar looks that go beyond the current 'C8' Corvette. The two concepts feature fighter jet-style interiors, with a trick canopy opening to boot. The twist — the CX is all electric, which is becoming a rarity at the higher end, and the CX-R features hybrid power. The racy CX-R will also be a drivable car in the Gran Turismo 7 racing game on PlayStation. And the response, beyond the oohs and ahhs, was strong for vehicles that aren't going on sale. 'We've had a number of customers that have already said, 'Could we buy one of those vehicles today?,'' said Rory Harvey, EVP and President of Global Markets, from the Quail Event to Yahoo Finance. Harvey, who essentially leads on all GM brands globally, noted that customers were asking to buy a vehicle with no pricing info, and wouldn't even be released. It was a good opportunity though, to collect future client info from buyers who typically own multiple cars. 'Just listening to the customers, the enthusiasts that are on the stage, I mean, the feedback is outstanding,' Harvey said. The UK-born exec noted that Corvette, in his opinion, was already at supercar levels, with competitive lap times at places like the Nurburgring in Germany, and 38% market share in the luxury sports car segment, making it the leader. Harvey's purview extends to Cadillac, where the luxury brand showed off its 'Elevated Velocity' concept, a cross-over style EV SUV meant to evoke the high-desert landscape. The new design language may hint at more curves and swooping design, as opposed to Cadillac's traditional angular features and vertical light bars. Regardless, Cadillac as a brand has been on a winning streak with its combination of traditional gas powered cars like the Escalade and CT5 sedans, and EVs like the Lyriq and Optiq. 'Cadillac now has done 12 consecutive quarters of year-on-year growth, which is absolutely superb. But in quarter two, Cadillac is now the number one luxury brand for EVs. So again, that's really, really strong,' Harvey said. 'We've launched so many new products over the course of the last two years, and that momentum continues to build. So we're looking at, how do we keep our foot on the accelerator pedal and build even further?' Harvey said he wasn't terribly concerned over the upcoming loss of the EV tax credit, because the brand would be able 'flex' into its other gas-powered offerings like the XT crossovers if its EVs were not price competitive. While a nice game plan, it doesn't address the fact the company invested heavily in EVs, and might take a hit to sales. Another challenge is tariffs, where GM took a big hit in the second quarter and stands to feel more pain in the second half of the year. Harvey noted the trade deals in place are mostly preliminary, so when the details come out the company will have a hard look at its manufacturing footprint, product portfolio in terms of territory, and where the company can minimize its tariff exposure. 'We've publicly stated that we believe that we can mitigate approximately 30% of the impact of tariffs; so, we're in a strong position at the moment,' Harvey said of GM's ability to pivot around President Trump's tariff war. Harvey still believes GM is in a great spot regardless of tariffs, and it's because of products like the current Corvette and Cadillac portfolio — cars that are selling well in the marketplace. 'If you looked at just General Motors sales in the US, we are the fastest growing brand, full stop. And if you look to the nearest competitor, they're about half the level of growth that we've got. 3 Reasons General Motors Stock Is a Screaming Buy

Key Points General Motors has sharply reduced its shares outstanding and boosted EPS. The Detroit carmaker has invested billions into its brands and product lineup. Moreover, management has successfully restructured its business in China. 10 stocks we like better than General Motors › When thinking about General Motors (NYSE: GM), many investors think back to the financial crisis and government bailout, but that doesn't do justice to the company that GM has become in the years since. GM is doing a lot of things right, and it's quietly becoming arguably the best automotive investment out there. Here are three reasons why. Returning value When it comes to returning value to shareholders, there are two primary pathways: dividends and share buybacks. Each comes with its advantages, but General Motors has decided to go heavy on share buybacks, with its stock trading at a paltry eight times price-to-earnings. General Motors has been extremely engaged in share buyback programs over the past decade. The Detroit automaker has consistently used strong free cash flow, along with the belief that its stock is heavily undervalued, to significantly reduce shares outstanding and boost earnings per share. You can see the extreme change in the graphic below. The carmaker has spent nearly $25 billion on share repurchases over the past three-plus years, reducing the number of shares outstanding from 1.5 billion to 950 million over that span. This is a significant and serious amount of cash spent to buy back shares when you consider that GM's market cap is roughly $50 billion. As long as GM's stock remains cheap, GM buying back its shares is good for investors, and that isn't likely to change in the near-term. Investing in brands/product General Motors has spent billions of dollars and years of time investing in its portfolio of brands and vehicles, and it's starting to pay off. Chevrolet, the heart and soul of General Motors, and GMC have both been thriving in 2025, with a record first half for GMC and the best since 2019 for Chevrolet. The brands, and GM in general, are coming off a product wave over the past few years that brought updated crossovers, SUVs, and EVs to the market -- and its highly profitable trucks are next. Chevrolet is also making a splash in the EV market, becoming the No. 2 brand during the second quarter, trailing only Tesla in the U.S. market. July was the best sales month ever for the Equinox EV, and it was the best sales result for an EV other than a Tesla in the U.S. market. The Equinox is projected to place in the top three in sales for 2025, behind only Tesla's Model Y and 3. In the broader picture, General Motors has invested heavily into its products and brands, and that's going to carry sales momentum for years to come. A turnaround in China China has been the promised land for automakers for decades: a booming population with a craving for vehicles. Unfortunately for foreign automakers, domestic brands have thrived in recent years -- so much so that there's a brutal price war going on, causing even the best foreign autos to struggle with profitability and market share. General Motors had previously been extremely successful in China, driving billions to the bottom line at its peak. But this price war hit GM hard, too, and forced the company back to the drawing board for a roughly $4 billion restructuring strategy. It's paying off, and GM just turned in a second consecutive quarter of sales increases, increasing 20% during Q2. "Our strong Q2 performance reflects the sustainable growth trajectory we are building in both sales and market share through local innovations," said Steve Hill, GM senior vice president and president of GM China. "We remain committed to driving profitable growth for China business by focusing on strong execution, business agility and customer choices." What it all means General Motors has been doing a lot of things right lately, even if Wall Street hasn't noticed. The company has spent tens of billions of dollars reducing its shares outstanding, poured billions in investments into brands and products, and reversed one of its biggest weaknesses in China.
