General Motors: History, innovation, and legacy
Learn about the rich history and notable innovations of General Motors, from its founding in 1908 to its leadership in electric and autonomous vehicle technology.
There are over 13 million GM Rewards members.
GM has had a branded credit card since 1992.
The new credit card will include chances to earn toward member-exclusive experiences – such as trackside access at racing events and off-the-grid EV excursions.
Taking cues from the travel industry, General Motors plans to relaunch its credit card under a new lender and change how points can be accrued and used on automotive purchases.
The new card provides customers more ways to earn and redeem GM Rewards points on new vehicles, services, parts and accessories, according to the company. And starting May 20, GM employees, retirees, dealership employees and suppliers eligible for vehicle discounts will be able to use GM Rewards points on top of that discount.
The card allows customers to earn up to 10 times the points on eligible GM purchases, broken down by seven times the points for every $1 spent when using the GM Rewards Mastercard, plus up to three times the points for being a GM Rewards member. All other purchases qualify for three times the points, which GM said can also be redeemed on GM Financial account balances.
The automaker has more than 13 million GM Rewards members, the company said. GM has had a branded credit card since 1992.

Changing rewards, adding ways to earn
Members of the company rewards program on average purchase vehicles with 5% higher manufacturer-suggested retail prices than nonmembers, visit GM dealerships twice as often as nonmembers and typically repurchase GM vehicles almost three years sooner than a nonmember, according to Ralph Darmo, head of GM Rewards.
'The value of those members is why GM has made the decision to invest in those members,' Darmo said. 'We're making the program better.'
Prior to joining GM, Darmo managed the Delta SkyMiles credit card and then managed the GM credit card when it was branded with Goldman Sachs.
One of the main changes is simplifying the program, streamlining the various separate branded rewards to one, Darmo said. Instead of Cadillac Rewards, Chevy Rewards, Buick Rewards, GMC Rewards and My Rewards, starting May 20, all of that will be lumped into My Rewards.
Details of changes to GM rewards
The goal is to improve the experience for dealerships as well as customers, Darmo said, because of the confusion over whether or not a GMC Rewards member could apply points on a Buick purchase, for example.
'You will get more points when you buy GM under the new program. We're also removing some of the restrictions — there won't be earn caps, there's no redemption caps, there's no exclusion on vehicles anymore, and the points are universal — the points can be used across all GM brands for a new GM vehicle or a certified pre-owned vehicle,' he said.
In addition, Darmo said GM rewards points can be shared not just with another member at your address; points can be transferred to any other GM Rewards member regardless of where they live.
The GM Rewards loyalty program now works through GM Rewards Mastercard, serviced by Barclays US Consumer Bank. The Delaware-based bank has a broad portfolio of co-branded credit cards including JetBlue, Old Navy, Gap, Frontier Airlines and Carnival Cruise Lines.
In addition to purchases at GM dealerships, the credit card also allows customers to gain and redeem points on digital services like most OnStar plans and Super Cruise, the hands-free driver assistance technology. Eventually, GM hopes to ensure the points can be used on electric-vehicle charging costs.
Existing cardmembers should use them until Aug. 25, GM said, and can expect their new, replacement Barclays cards later this summer, along with activation instructions.
Darmo also added that the card includes member-exclusive experiences — such as trackside access at racing events and off-the-grid EV excursions.
Later this year, GM and Barclays plan to launch the GM Business Mastercard, specifically for business customers, with a higher earn rate on GM purchases and expanded redemption options.

Woman Starts Her GMC Denali SUV. Then It Sputters Out

A woman captured the moment her GMC Yukon Denali sputtered out on video. She then asked the internet if this is "normal." Unfortunately for her, the answer appears to be yes. On May 31, TikToker Shelby Thomason (@shelbythomason3) posted a video showing a parked GMC Yukon Denali. Its engine is rumbling in a clear sign of distress. Get the best news, reviews, columns, and more delivered straight to your inbox, daily. back Sign up For more information, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use . The location on the video indicates the SUV is parked at the Capitol Buick GMC Service Center in San Jose, California. The comments section is rife with complaints about the Denali. One viewer wrote, "Just traded my 2024 Denali with 22,000 miles for this reason last week." A massive recall Now trending Woman Gets Dealership Oil Change For Her Brand-New Toyota Tundra. Then She Catches the Technician In a Lie 'Big Gap Here:' Man Buys Hyundai Elantra. Then He Realizes Newer Models All Have This Design Flaw That Leads To Rust Last month, General Motors announced the recall of an eyebrow-raising 600,000 trucks and SUVs it sold in the United States, including the Yukon and Yukon XL. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the issue potentially affects the following models released between 2021 and 2024: Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV; Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL. According to GM's recall report , "The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components in these vehicles may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure." If an engine fails while it's being driven, the car will stop moving forward, which could lead to a crash. Drivers can reportedly tell that their vehicle is at risk of engine failure if they hear an odd banging coming from under the hood. The NHTSA says to look out for a check engine light, high RPMs, abnormal shifting, or the vehicle not starting. It's best to avoid driving if you suspect engine issues. People who suspect their car has been impacted should take it to the dealership for an inspection. If the vehicle passes inspection, it gets an oil change, and the owner will be on his or her way. If the engine is already failing due to the issue, GM will replace it free of charge. Owners should receive notification letters by mail, or can proactively check their car's status online using their vehicle identification number (VIN). On a Reddit thread posted to r/GMC a month ago, commenters expressed confusion and dismay about the recall and its process. One person wrote, 'My concern is how comfortable will I be hauling my family around in it after the dealer tells me I'm just getting the oil replacement. One article (on I think) said of the reported cases, '14,332 involved allegations of lost propulsion'. That's a lot. I do a lot of interstate driving and don't want to be thinking about this as I'm going over the Delaware Memorial Bridge or across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.' The NHTSA backs this claim up. Of those alleged incidents when a vehicle abruptly stopped moving while it was being driven, 12 resulted in potentially related crashes and 12 potentially related injuries. All the injuries were minor. Motor1 reached out to both GM and Shelby Thomason for comment. We will update this story if either responds. The New Cadillac Optiq-V Packs a Ton of Power, Tesla Charging

Cadillac is going all-in on performance with its V-Series cars—including the automaker's latest electric vehicles. The Lyriq was the first EV to get the V-Series performance treatment, and now that nameplate extends to the smaller Optiq. The 2026 Cadillac Optiq-V makes significantly more power than the standard version: 519 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, compared to just 300 horsepower and 354 pound-feet on the base model. That extra oomph comes from an upgraded 85.0-kilowatt-hour battery pack with two electric motors. Photo by: Cadillac The Lyriq-V has a 0-60 mph time of just 3.5 seconds, which makes it nearly as quick as Cadillac's most powerful V-Series car, the CT5-V Blackwing (3.4 seconds). The Lyriq-V is even quicker still, with a 0-60 mph time of just 3.3 seconds. Even with that newfound performance, though, the Optiq-V still manages a modest 275 miles of range. Maybe most importantly, this is the first GM product to come from the factory with a North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug. That means you can plug into any of the thousands of Tesla Superchargers worldwide without an adaptor. Although, GM hasn't revealed details on charging speeds. A new V-Mode system adds launch control and a Competitive Mode, which tweaks the traction control system for even better agility. New Brembo performance front brakes give the Optiq-V even better stopping power, and GM's hands-free Super Cruise safety system comes standard on this model. Model Powertrain Output 0-60 MPH Cadillac Optiq-V 85.0-kWh Battery 519 HP / 650 LB-FT 3.5 Seconds Cadillac Lyriq-V 102.0-kWh Battery 615 HP / 650 LB-FT 3.3 Seconds Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Supercharged 6.2L V-8 668 HP / 659 LB-FT 3.4 Seconds Performance With Looks to Match That extra horsepower pairs with even more aggressive looks. The Optiq-V has a unique front fascia with a special V-Mesh grille design, gloss black accents, and available carbon fiber trim pieces. That optional carbon fiber package also extends to the rear bumper and spoiler. V-Series badges litter the exterior of the body, from the rear doors and trunk to the wheels. The Optiq-V's custom 21-inch wheels wear a Graphite finish with the 'V-Series' badge laser-etched into the metal. But, buyers can also choose from polished or painted wheel options, with standard all-season rubber or optional summer tires. Photo by: Cadillac Photo by: Cadillac Cadillac offers two limited-edition colors for the Optiq-V: A matte gray Magnus Metal Frost and a blue Deep Ocean (pictured here). Those blue accents extend to the painted Brembo brake calipers and inside the cabin, with Santorini Blue (or Sky Cool Gray) accents on the dash, door panels, seats, and even seat belts. There are also V-Series badges aplenty, as well as carbon fiber accents on the center console. Alongside Super Cruiser, the Optiq-V also gets a host of technology, ranging from a standard 19-speaker AKG9 Studio Audio System, a 33.0-inch display that includes the instrument cluster and touchscreen, and Google's Built-In infotainment system with standard Google Maps and Google Assistant. Unfortunately, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren't available. Check Out This List Every Three-Row SUV You Can Buy in 2025 The Price to Plug-In The standard Cadillac Optiq starts at $56,390 in the US for 2025, but you will have to pay a bit more for the V-Series model. Cadillac asks $68,795 for the Optiq-V, with destination and handling charges included. The larger and quicker Cadillac Lyriq-V, by comparison, starts at $79,990. "The V-Series was a natural continuation with the Optiq's architecture," says John Cockburn, the Optiq-V's chief engineer. "With Cadillac's signature isolated precision ride and handling characteristic, tighter steering, enhanced suspension, and summer-only tires, our team delivered a unique package that makes Optiq-V a fun, nimble drive that's quicker when cornering." 8 Source: Cadillac Share this Story Facebook X LinkedIn Flipboard Reddit WhatsApp E-Mail Got a tip for us? The Cadillac Optiq-V is GM's first EV with built-in Tesla Supercharger support

The Cadillac Optiq may be the newest addition to the automaker's electric lineup, but it's already getting its own V-series performance variant. Nearly five months after the 2025 Optiq first arrived at dealerships, Cadillac is revealing the Optiq-V, with 519 horsepower, 650 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque, and a 0–60 mph acceleration of 3.5 seconds in Velocity Max mode. (That includes a metric called 'Initial Vehicle Movement,' which is when the vehicle starts moving rather than when the green light goes off.) And while that's not as quick as the Lyriq-V, which was announced earlier this year, the Optiq-V will absolutely keep pace with the iconic CT5-V Blackwing. But perhaps more importantly, the EV will be the first General Motors electric vehicle with a native, factory-installed NACS charging port, which means it will have access to tens of thousands of Tesla Superchargers in the US and overseas — no adapter required. That's a big deal for GM, which has struggled (as have other automakers) with the bumpy rollout of NACS adapters to its EV customers. As the first native NACS vehicle, the Optiq-V signals the start of a more seamless, less dongle-dependent charging future for GM's EVs. In addition to a standard dual-motor setup, the Optiq-V features an 85 kWh battery pack that provides an estimated 275 miles of range. Cadillac didn't offer any additional details on charging speeds. Design-wise, the Optiq-V doesn't look too dissimilar from its V-less sibling, but an optional carbon fiber package adds a bunch of sporty touches like a front splitter, rear diffuser, and rear mid-spoiler. The front also gets a makeover, with a signature V-pattern mesh in the lower grill, a high-gloss black front splitter, and body colored lower trim. As the first native NACS vehicle, the Optiq-V signals the start of a more seamless, less dongle-dependent charging future for GM's EVs The Optiq-V is perched on 21-inch satin graphite alloy wheels with Brembo brake calipers, paired with low-profile tires and a laser-etched V-series badge. The steering will be tighter, with more enhanced suspension, than Cadillac owners might otherwise be accustomed to. And yes, the Optiq-V will feature a 'unique sound experience' that simulates the engine growl from a combustion engine vehicle. The sound can be adjusted in the settings, including by toggling on the 'stealth mode' that reverts things back to the more natural, silent profile. Cadillac is the latest automaker to resort to faux exhaust noises piped through external speakers to comfort car buyers who may be feeling a bit anxious about leaving the warm bosom of the internal combustion engine. Another unique feature is a button on the steering wheel for V-Mode, which enables drivers to 'save performance-focused settings, including Competitive Mode and a unique sound experience.' And unlike the Lyriq-V, the Optiq-V won't support phone mirroring through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The electric V-Series has been in the works for a while now. Cadillac first introduced the concept of an electrified V with the introduction of three V-Series.R hybrid racecars at the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship races in 2023. And earlier this year, it released the Lyriq-V, a performance spin on its original electric crossover. When it goes on sale later this year, the Optiq-V will start at $68,795, which includes destination charges but not taxes, title, license, and dealer fees. Cadillac says the new EV will be available in the US, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East, and Israel.
