Totoro Full of Poses figures are full of joyful cuteness, complete set comes with a surprise
Ghibli's biggest star strikes a half-dozen poses for adorable mini figure line.
Totoro leads a pretty good life, doesn't he? His position as 'forest spirit' seems to be a lot more laid back than that of his counterparts from Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke , leaving Totoro plenty of time to relax and indulge in a variety of hobbies, as represented by this adorable figure line.
The Totoro Full of Poses collection has just been restocked by Ghibli specialty store Donguri Kyowakoku, with six figures each showing the cuddly guy engaged in a different activity, such as playing his ocarina or roaring like the howling wind as he flies across the sky.
Exact sizes depend on the pose, but the figures are all compact, with heights of about 7 centimeters (2.8 inches). That doesn't mean there's no space for charming details, though, like the sleepy look to Totoro's eyes on the naptime figure, for which Mei makes a guest appearance.
Likewise, you can feel his happy curiosity as he checks out the umbrella he's been gifted…
…and his satisfied excitement as he spins his top with a flourish.
As mentioned above, though, there are actually six figures in the line, with the final pose being a secret to all those who haven't unboxed it yet.
The Totoro Full of Poses figures are being offered by Donguri Kyowakoku for 1,100 yen (US$7.60) each as a blind-buy/gacha purchase through the chain's online shop here, but if you're keen to get the whole set you can also purchase a box bundle of six here for 6,600 yen which guarantees you one of each pose, eliminating the possibility of spending money on duplicates, in the same way as the deal offered for those clever Howl's Moving Castle Kazaring rings.

Can putting a giant dragonfly on your head repel bugs?
If you can't beat 'em, wear 'em. Aside from the energy-sapping heat of summer in Japan, the season also brings with it swarms of insects. There's nothing worse than sweating buckets outside, only to hear that ultra-high-pitched whir of a mosquito graze your ear. Blindly waving your hands and hurling epithets at it is useless because there's only one language bugs understand: eat or be eaten. That's why our writer Udonko invested in Oniyanma-kun, a plastic figure of an oniyanma dragonfly. 'Yanma' is the Japanese word for larger types of dragonfly and an 'oni' is a type of mythical demon that's similar to an ogre, but the word is often used figuratively to mean something like 'mother of all' in a superlative sense. So, 'oniyanma' can literally translate to 'the mother of all dragonflies' and is also known as the 'jumbo dragonfly' in English. Needless to say, they can be pretty big — up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in fact — and they get that way by being a voracious devourer of other insects. Udonko figured that such a notorious predator in the insect world stood a good chance of keeping bugs off her and her beloved dog, so she ordered one online for 964 yen plus 460 yen for shipping and paid a total of 1,424 yen (US$10). Oniyanma-kun is about the size of a real oniyanma, which is to say really big, and it has a safety pin on the mouth so you can attach it to clothing or bags. According to the package, it's most effective when placed somewhere that other insects can easily see it, like on a hat or backpack. The package also said it would work for dogs as well, so she decided to pin Oniyanma-kun to her pet's harness and go for a walk in an area where bugs are known to be. This way she could clearly monitor how well it worked. She repeated this for about two weeks to get a good sense of Oniyanma-kun's effectiveness and came to the conclusion that it kind of worked sometimes. She could clearly see that wasps and mosquitoes that would normally beeline it for her dog veered away when Oniyanma-kun was spotted. However, really small bugs like gnats did not seem deterred by the plastic dragonfly. Perhaps they lacked the ability to detect it well, but either way, that was acceptable since it was more the wasps and mosquitos that Udonko was worried about. Another problem was that when a mosquito was out of the line of sight with Oniyanma-kun it didn't hesitate to bite into her prized pooch, either because it was smart enough to get out of the dragonfly's field of view or because it was stupid enough to not even remember the beast was there once it was out of sight. One really good point about Oniyanma-kun was that it worked across a range of insect species, whereas bug repellants often only target certain ones. Although it definitely had its limitations, there was a certain degree of effectiveness and if used in the right way or in combination with other methods, it could be a useful tool. It also gave Udonko an added sense of confidence. When a wasp approached her, she would say, 'Are you sure about that? I got an oniyanma here,' and she could stay calm until it flew away. All in all, the positives outweighed the negatives and it was well worth the purchase both for her and her dog. Official Spirited Away cookbook teaches how to make food from the Ghibli anime classic
From Haku's rice ball to cursed chicken and charred newt cookies, this book will show you how to make Spirited Away's fantastic fantasy fare. Mouthwateringly detailed depictions of food have become as much a symbol of Studio Ghibli anime as fanciful flight sequences and plucky heroines. Food takes on the most narrative and thematic significance, though, in Spirited Away, where different dishes are used to symbolize greed, compassion, or sacrifice, serving as edible milestones on the characters' arcs. So it was a reasonable expectation that the official Ghibli anime cookbook series would eventually get around to Spirited Away , and now it finally has. Like the other books in the line, Ghibli's Table: Spirited Away is a collection of recipes that recreate food seen within the Hayao Miyazaki-directed classic, and also mix in a few new creations inspired by the setting and characters. Publisher Shufu no Tomo says that the 64-page volume contains instructions for how to make the onigiri rice ball Haku gives to Chihiro, the tempura rice ball devoured by the spider-like Kamaji, a non-bitter version of the bitter dumpling Chihiro receives as a sign of thanks from the river god, charred newt-shaped cookies, and 'the chicken eaten by Chihiro's mother.' ▼ You can spot Zeniba's cake on the book's cover too, so it feels like a safe bet that there'll be a recipe for it too. Like all of the Ghibli cookbooks, the Spirited Away volume is meant to be simple enough for adults or kids to follow along with. The ingredients used are all things that can be found in a typical Japanese grocery store, so even if you're outside of Japan, odds are you'll be able to source what you need as long as you've got an Asian market nearby or an online ingredient source. The series also tends to have detailed photos of the cooking process, and the descriptions, though in Japanese, are written to be easy for kids and inexperienced home chefs to understand, so they shouldn't be too hard to decipher for non-natives with some basic Japanese language proficiency. ▼ For example, here's a page from Shufu no Tomo's Castle in the Sky cookbook, showing photos for the recipe steps and including phonetic readings for the kanji characters. Chiikawa Park opens next month in Tokyo's Sunshine City shopping complex
Fans of Chiikawa and friends will delight in an opportunity to become immersed in the characters' world. The charm of web manga-turned-anime character Chiikawa doesn't diminish despite it being of an undetermined, animal-like species. Its name, which is short for nanka chiisakute kawaii yatsu ('something small and cute'), only adds to its appeal. In fact, Chiikawa's appeal has grown so much in the past five years that it's about to get something that only the most popular of Japanese mascots can achieve with Chiikawa Park, which will officially open to the public on July 28 in the Annex Building of Ikebukuro's popular Sunshine City shopping complex. ▼ Promotional image for Chiikawa Park Chiikawa Park isn't said to be so much of an amusement park as it is an immersive space where visitors can feel like they've actually stepped Chiikawa's world. Game corners and a shop selling limited-edition items will also add to the fun. Not many details about the experiential area of the park have been released yet, but we do know that it will include many scenes from the manga in which you can join in on the action and take fun pictures. For instance, you might just happen to run into Ode the giant breaking out of jail as you move along! Examples of the on-site games will include 'Spiderweb Catcher,' in which players must capture the characters with a web, and 'Meatball Rolling,' in which players must roll 'meatballs' into holes. For many visitors, the chance to snag some limited-edition merchandise may be a main draw. The park shop is set to sell a variety of goodies, both of the practical and decorative variety, for you to add to your Chiikawa collection.
