Ben Stokes Mocked As ‘Cry Baby' By Fans After Blaming Edgbaston Pitch For Loss vs India

IND vs ENG: India stormed back into the five-match Test series with a thumping 336-run victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston, leveling the series 1-1 in emphatic fashion. The visitors outclassed England in all departments, riding on Shubman Gill's twin tons and a fiery bowling display led by Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj.
Stokes Blames 'Subcontinent Pitch' for Defeat
England skipper Ben Stokes stirred debate after the loss by calling the Edgbaston surface a 'subcontinental pitch' as it progressed, suggesting India were better suited to exploit the conditions.
'It probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch... with the Indian attack and the conditions they are used to, they were able to expose it better than us,' Stokes said during a BBC interview.
His remarks were not received well by fans, many of whom criticized him online for deflecting blame rather than accepting England's shortcomings in execution.

"It ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch." Lol Ben Stokes is a proper cry baby. Absolutely lost it when Jaiswal got an opportunity to review. Was throwing fits that umpire gave him LBW in what was plumb.

Akash Deep, Siraj Decimate England's Batting Line-Up
With Jasprit Bumrah rested, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj stepped up in spectacular fashion. Akash, playing only his second Test, delivered match-winning figures of 10/187, including a 6/99 haul in the second innings now the best bowling performance by an Indian pacer in England.
Siraj, meanwhile, starred in the first innings with 6/70, which set the tone for India's dominance. Their combined efforts dismantled the English batting on what many called a batting-friendly surface.
Gill's Heroics and India's Batting Masterclass
India's win was set up by captain Shubman Gill, who created history by becoming the first player in Test cricket to score both a 250 (269) and a 150+ (161) in the same match. India posted a staggering 1014 runs across two innings 587 and 427/6d a record in Indian Test history.
He was ably supported by Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, who all made significant contributions.
Jamie Smith Lone Warrior for England
England's only bright spot was Jamie Smith, who followed up his unbeaten 184 in the first innings with a gritty 88 in the second. Despite wickets tumbling around him, Smith showed great fight, though it wasn't enough to prevent the collapse.

Indian sports wrap, July 7: India picks six Asian Championship medallists for U17 World Championships selection trials

WRESTLING Six Asian Championship medallists win selection trials for U17 World Championships The Indian team picked for the Under-17 World Championship did not have many surprises, with as many as six medal winners from the recent Asian Championships acing the selection trials to make the national team on Monday. The Wresting Federation of India (WFI) had restricted the trials to medal winners at the recent U17 National Championship, thus only the best wrestlers in each of the 10 categories competed, limiting the number of bouts. Haryana's Rachna Parmar (43kg), Delhi's Moni (57kg), Rajasthan's Ashvini Vaishno (65kg), and Haryana's Manisha (69kg), who won gold medals at the Asian Championships in Vietnam, emerged winners in their respective categories. Rachna got the better of Cheshta 3-0 in the final. After losing a point on passivity, Cheshta tried the 'dhobi pachad' at least twice but lost a point on counterattack as Rachna managed to take her down on one of the moves to come out a clean winner. Cheshta had also won a medal at the Asian Championship—a silver in 40 kg—but she chose to compete in 43kg on Monday. The 65kg and 69kg weight class featured only two wrestlers each. Ashvini beating Haryana's Taniya 2-0 in 65kg and Manisha pinning Delhi Bharti after taking a comfortable 4-0 lead. Anshika Yadav from UP missed out on competing in 69kg after the officials stopped her weigh-in because her passport is expiring in December this year, and a six-month validity is a must for visa application. 'Even if she had won, she would not have travelled, so what's the point in her competing? It's unfortunate that she could not compete,' said an official. 'Today is the last day to send entries through UWW's software and we couldn't have sent her name even if she got her passport renewed through Tatkal.' Uttar Pradesh's Preeti (40kg), Kasish (46kg), Komal (49kg), Yashita (61 kg), and Kajal (73kg) were the other trial winners. Komal defeated Asia Championship bronze winner Anjali after erasing a 0-2 deficit. Anjali went up 2-0 with a takedown and maintained the lead till the break. In the second period, Komal was put on the clock, and she responded with a quick two-point move. She effected another takedowntowards the end to earn her spot on the Indian team. Incidentally, Kajal was the lone wrestler in the 73kg weight class. -Press Trust of India FOOTBALL Kerala Blasters announces new signing Brahmacharimayum Sumit Sharma signs for Kerala Blasters. | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Indian Super League team Kerala Blasters on Monday announced the signing of young defender Brahmacharimayum Sumit Sharma. Wimbledon: Vijay Amritraj feels potential semi-final between Djokovic and Sinner would be a 'match to watch'

Veteran Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj believes that Serbian legend Novak Djokovic's potential semi-final clash against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon men's singles would be a match to watch in the grass-court Grand Slam. Amritraj also highlighted the growing rivalry between Sinner and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz as the duo shared all the Grand Slams between them since 2024. Among the big three - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic - the Serbian last's Grand Slam victory came in the 2023 French Open - while Federer retired in 2022 and Nadal called time on his career last year. With Djokovic also at the final stage of his career, Amritraj feels the rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz will go a long way after a spectacular Roland Garros final between them last month. "I think Sinner-Alcaraz have proven to be a good rivalry that has already started simply because the last six Grand Slams, have been won between the two of them. And so I do believe that there is a rivalry there," Amritraj, JioStar Wimbledon expert, told IANS during virtual interaction. "Djokovic is clearly in the mix at this point, hanging on especially on grass. So it's going to be interesting to see how the rest of the week progresses this week with Djokovic. If we can make the semis and play Sinner, that would be a match to watch," he added. When asked who would he pick as the 'bigger player' between the current top twos, the former Indian star said, "It all depends so much on injuries, physical capabilities, desire and work ethic. I think both of them have shown beyond reasonable doubt that they both have their talent and work ethic at this point. It's a question also of remaining physically well and strong. "That's why they have very good physical teams around them to keep them fresh. And so that's going to come down a lot to that. They're both 22 and 23. They've been playing each other since the juniors. So, I think it remains to be seen, but they're just off to an excellent start." Amritraj lauded Alcaraz's variety and termed him a complete player with all bases covered. "He has got a tremendous variety in his game. The variety was not there in a lot of most of the players today. They are tremendous from the backcourt, tremendous of the first serve. They're not great volleyers, but they don't come in much. But Alcaraz has got a good mix of all of that, including the drop shot and the lob. "He moves extremely well, he gets three points on a serve, he attacks well, he plays from the back well and under most circumstances, he has got a very strong head. So, he's quite a complete player that way. The question is, how long will players take to be able to penetrate his defences? So, I think that's where Alcaraz stands at this point," he said. In the round of 16 clash, Djokovic will face Australia's Alex de Minaur while Sinner will take on Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov on Monday. On the other hand, defending Wimbledon champion Alcaraz will lock horns against Britain's Cameron Norrie in the quarter-final clash on Tuesday.
