'Wednesday' star Jenna Ortega felt 'patronised' after season one, reveals post-fame struggles: 'I was an unhappy person'
Wednesday propelled
Jenna Ortega
to global stardom, defining her career with her gothic portrayal of Wednesday Addams. However, the show's immense success brought unforeseen challenges for the young actress, including intense pressure, overwhelming attention, and a pervasive feeling of not being taken seriously.
The Weight of Fame
In a recent interview with Harper's Bazaar, Ortega candidly shared the personal toll of the show's popularity. "To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person," she admitted. "After the pressure, the attention — as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary."
Feeling "Patronised" Due to Image
A significant challenge that continues to trouble Ortega is how her on-screen appearance influences public perception.
She confessed that dressing as a schoolgirl and her youthful look made it difficult for others to perceive her as an adult. "It's always been really annoying, because you just don't feel like you're being taken seriously," she explained. "You know, it's like how you're dressed in the schoolgirl costume.
There's just something about it that's very patronising. Also, when you're short, people are already physically looking down on you."
This image, she noted, persists even now, as she's "doing a show I'm going to be doing for years where I play a schoolgirl. But I'm also a young woman."
From Disney to Darkness
Prior to landing her iconic role in Tim Burton's Wednesday, Ortega was predominantly associated with lighter, cheerful characters stemming from her time as a Disney star. "I've always been into dark things or been fascinated by them, but I was a Disney kid, and the whole thing is being bubbly and kind and overly sweet," she admitted, highlighting a personal inclination that diverged from her early career image.
Taking Control Behind the Camera
During the interview, Ortega also addressed the often unfair expectations placed upon young women in the entertainment industry, pointing out how female actors are frequently judged for growing and evolving. "But you're watching these women at the most pivotal times in their lives," she added. To gain more creative agency, Ortega is stepping into a producer's role for Wednesday Season 2, stating, "I sit in on meetings and listen and learn.
I'm still finding my footing in that area."
Wednesday will be launched in two parts: Part 1 on August 6 and Part 2 on September 3.

Not a Cobra Kai sequel, but Karate Kid: Legends is definitely in the same universe
The beloved 'Karate Kid' universe is expanding with 'Karate Kid: Legends', released recently on 30 May, 2025. The highly anticipated movie brought together two iconic figures for the first time: Ralph Macchio 's Daniel LaRusso, from the original 1984 classic and the recent hit series 'Cobra Kai', and Jackie Chan 's Mr. Han, the kung fu master from the 2010 reboot. A shared universe, not a direct sequel| While fans might expect a continuation of Netflix's 'Cobra Kai', which concluded its six-season run in February 2025, director Jonathan Entwistle has clarified that 'Karate Kid: Legends' is not a direct sequel. Instead, it exists within the same expansive universe, offering a new chapter rather than a direct follow-up. Macchio expressed his enthusiasm for connecting Daniel and Mr. Han, both of whom trained under the mentorship philosophies of Mr. Miyagi, calling it "another ecosystem in the grand universe" of 'The Karate Kid'. New hero, surprise return Set three years after the events of 'Cobra Kai', the film introduces a fresh protagonist: Li Fong, played by American Born Chinese star Ben Wang. Li is depicted as a martial arts student from Beijing who moves to New York City, where he will learn both kung fu from Mr. Han and karate from Daniel LaRusso. Fans can also hold on tight as a significant return awaits. William Zabka reprises his role as Johnny Lawrence in a cameo appearance near the end of the film. Director Entwistle revealed that keeping Zabka's involvement a secret was "very hard," adding to the excitement. Macchio himself lauded Zabka's contribution, stating, "He graces 'Cobra Kai' with a brilliant performance, and he graces us here with a tip of the hat to the legendary Johnny Lawrence. Chinmayi Sripada on comparisons over 'Thug Life' song: ‘I want to apologise to Dhee'
Singer Chinmayi Sripada finds herself at the centre of attention for her stirring rendition of the song 'Mutha Mazhai' at the recent Thug Life audio launch. Her performance has ignited a social media frenzy, with fans demanding its inclusion in the film and drawing comparisons to Dhee's original version. Chinmayi, however, has quelled the debate, emphasising artistic camaraderie over competition. Addressing the latest surge in popularity and the ensuing comparisons in an interview with The Hindu, Chinmayi articulated her perspective. Describing it as a regular on-stage rendition of an original song, she said that it is not something she has done for the first time, citing her prior versions of KS Chithra and S Janaki's songs. Chinmayi also emphasised that she sang the Tamil version of the song at the audio launch of Thug Life due to the absence of its original singer, Dhee. Chinmayi then addressed the comparisons, expressing her discomfort. She said that Thug Life makers must have chosen Dhee for a 'quirky' version of the song. She then described Dhee's musical expression as being inimitable and called the comparison between their versions of the song unnecessary. 'It feels like we are part of a wrestling match that we did not sign up for,' said the 'Tere Bina' singer. She underscored the mutual respect prevalent among artists and even extended an apology to Dhee for the comparisons.
