New Line's ‘Space Invaders' Movie is Back in Business

Next up on the ever-expanding list of video game adaptations? A movie for Space Invaders, apparently. Per Deadline, New Line Cinema is finally making good on its hopes to bring Taito's shoot 'em up to life. First announced back in 2019, the studio and production company Safehouse Pictures have put comedy writers Ben Zazove and Evan Turner on script duties. Individually, they've written or produced for movies like Sherlock Gnomes (Zazove) and Journey to the Center of the Earth (Turner), but as a pair, they wrote the 2023 Netflix film The Outlaws and wrote an action-comedy called Officer Exchange in development with John Cena attached to star. Developer Taito released Space Invaders first hit arcades in 1978, and has gone on to become one of the highest-grossing video games ever. Since its release, it's become a franchise with remasters, remakes, and sequels spread across console generations, PC, and mobile phones. As of 2025, the most recent installment is the iOS and Android title Space Invaders Infinity Gene Evolve. Space Invaders is the latest retro game Hollywood wants for the silver screen. Also on the docket are films based on Sega's OutRun and Shinobi franchises, and Pac-Man from Bandai Namco. We'll see if Space Invaders gets to the finish line in the next few years, or just shoots and shuffles its way to development hell. Want more io9 news? What If Batman Was the Real Villain All Along? This Animated Sketch Explores the Darkest Timeline — GeekTyrant

In a darkly funny animated short titled If Batman Was a Real Billionaire, Gotham's greatest protector becomes its most terrifying overlord. Instead of dishing out vigilante justice, this version of Batman leans hard into late-stage capitalism. The Joker's plan to poison the water supply? Doesn't matter when Batman already owns the water company. Penguin's next big media stunt? Good luck getting airtime when the Bat owns the news. Henchmen? They're now stocking shelves at a Bat-branded fulfillment center earning minimum wage… in Bat-Bucks. It's a funny satire that flips the script on the billionaire superhero trope, asking what real-world power and unchecked wealth would actually look like in a world like Gotham. This Batman doesn't just fight crime, he's buying up the infrastructure, the hospitals, the courts, and even mining the public's data. By the end of it, even the classic rogues gallery has to admit defeat.

Jamie Lee Curtis Says There Wasn't a Day She 'Didn't Cry in the Car' Leaving Her 6-Month-Old at Home to Work

The 'Freakier Friday' actress shares her two children with husband Christopher GuestNEED TO KNOW Jamie Lee Curtis' most important role is being a mom to her two daughters While speaking to the New York Times, the actress opened up about the hardships she faced as a working mom in the entertainment industry The Freakier Friday star is a mom to adult daughters Ruby and AnnieWhile many know her from her many iconic roles, including the Halloween franchise and Everything Everywhere All at Once, Jamie Lee Curtis' most important role is being a mom to her two daughters. While speaking with the New York Times ahead of the release of Freakier Friday, in which she reprises her role as single mom Tess Coleman alongside Lindsay Lohan's Anna Coleman, the actress, 66, candidly revealed some of the hardships she faced as a mom in the entertainment business. "I'm a mom of two daughters. Motherhood is hard, particularly motherhood and show business," she told the outlet. "It was a struggle for me from when Annie was a baby and I was making A Fish Called Wanda. There wasn't a day I didn't cry in the car, leaving a 6-month-old at home. This is a fun, exciting, creative life, but I have struggled." The Bear actress shares her two daughters, Ruby, 29, and Annie, 38, with husband Christopher Guest. Curtis and Guest became parents through adoption after experiencing infertility, Curtis said in Pact's Point of View Newsletter. She wrote, "Motherhood is every wonderful cliché in the book. There is an unexplainable sort of thing you just feel. It's a permanent commitment, one I've changed my life to meet." In October 2022, the actress was accompanied by her daughters on the red carpet for the world premiere of Halloween Ends at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. All three women looked glamorous as they posed together with Curtis, who was wearing a shimmery red off-the-shoulder gown with long sleeves. Annie rocked a strapless black dress with a sweetheart neckline and silver roses on either side of the bodice, while her younger sister wore a silver dress under a black jacket. Ruby also carried the perfect accessory for the event over her shoulder: a pumpkin-shaped bag. "My family. Proudest mother. Loving support. @halloweenmovie," Curtis captioned a photo of the glammed-up trio on Instagram. The Halloween Ends premiere came four months after she officiated the wedding of daughter Ruby and her partner, Kynthia, during an event where attendants and guests came in cosplay attire. While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in March of 2022, the Knives Out star said she'd officiate Ruby's wedding dressed as World of Warcraft character Jaina Proudmoore. Curtis added that she was especially excited that her younger daughter would be tying the knot in the backyard of the family home, just like Annie did three years prior. "We're gonna have a beautiful picnic in the backyard. I'm really excited," Curtis told host Jimmy Kimmel. "Both my children will have been married in my backyard, which brings me to tears." "It's so much more meaningful," the mother of two explained. "Just forgetting all of show-off business — being a parent, having both of your children married in your backyard."
