Louth trio awarded significant roles in Athletics Ireland

Georgina Drumm (St Peter's AC) was honoured for her long years of service in multiple roles at the highest level of Irish sport by being appointed a Life Vice President. But this in no way means that Georgina is about to rest on her laurels! On the contrary, a busy two years await her as she was also elected as Chair of Athletics Ireland's Competition Committee.
Fintan Reilly (Dunleer AC), who very successfully chaired the High Performance Committee in recent years - a period of renewed success for Irish athletes at the very top level after some quiet years, - moves to chair the Finance and Risk Committee. In addition, he will serve as a Vice President of Athletics Ireland for the first time.
Deirdre McTeggart (Boyne AC) was elected to serve on the Juvenile Committee for the next two years. Deirdre has been a long-time contributor as an administrator and official at both local and national level, but this will be her first time to be a member of an Athletics Ireland committee.
Others from County Louth who attended the Congress as delegates included Dermot Barry (Glenmore AC), Kathleen McConnell (St Peter's AC), Catherine Muckian (Dundealgan AC) and Micheal Mulligan (Dunleer AC).

Tragic Irish athlete, 22, mourned after untimely death as club vow ‘you will always be remembered'

AWFUL TIME Tragic Irish athlete, 22, mourned after untimely death as club vow 'you will always be remembered' TRIBUTES have poured in for Irish athlete Oisin Cassidy since the 22-year-old's tragic death from cancer on Monday. Oisin has been remembered as a "talented and humble" young man who was well-known for his passion for running in his home county of Fermanagh. 2 Oisin Cassidy was a popular figure across the whole community of Derrylin Credit: Mark Kirk Running Facebook Group 2 He was a dedicated runner as well as Gaelic footballer Credit: His post describes how he died "peacefully, after a long illness surrounded by his heartbroken family". It adds: "Deeply regretted by his sorrowing mother, aunt, uncle, granddad, cousins and extended family circle." His funeral is to take place today, August 13 at St Ninnidh's Church in his hometown of Derrylin. Among the tributes paid to him since Monday's awful news broke, the Mark Kirk Running Group hailed him for being a "valuable member" of their training group. Their Facebook post read: "We have just heard today the very sad news of the death of Oisin Cassidy who was a valued member of the training group and one of the founder members of Candour Track Club. "'Cass' a master of fantasy football league will missed by all his teammates and running friends. Sincerest condolences to all his family circle." Furthermore, Rock Runners - who are a community-based run club in Derrylin - added a heartfelt tribute of their own. They reflected: "We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend, Oisin Cassidy this morning. "Oisin was an exceptionally talented runner, both locally and nationally, representing Athletics NI in international competitions. He was also a proud multiple time winner of our very own 5K race. "Throughout his illness, Oisin showed remarkable strength, dignity, and kindness. Inside Sharlene Mawdsley's 'delicious' yet atypical Tenerife holiday with GAA star boyfriend Mikey Breen "Even during his toughest days he thought of others allowing us to host the 5/10K Around the Rock event in his honour, raising an incredible amount for his chosen cancer charities. "But most of all we will remember Oisin as a kind inspirational young man who was highly respected in our community and we extend our deepest sympathy to his mum Veronica and all of the Cassidy family. Rest easy Oisin." Another local running club, OMG AC, wrote: "It is with much sadness that we learned today of the passing of Oisin Cassidy. Oisin was such a talented but humble young man. "He bore his illness with courage and not a complaint. We send all our love to Oisín's mum, Veronica Cassidy, and all his wider family circle and his friends. Oisin and all of you will always be remembered by OMG AC." GAA CLUB'S MEMORIES Throughout his childhood and adolescence he'd also represented the local GAA club who similarly paid their respects as the entire community came to terms with his life being cut short. Derrylin O'Connells hailed: "Our club is in shock and mourning at the tragic passing of Oisin Cassidy. "Oisin proudly represented our club at under age levels and was part of our Under 12 Division 1 league winning team in 2015. "Oisin a talented, humble and gifted athlete used his athletic prowess to occupy the midfield and wing half back positions in our teams. "Oisin would cover every blade of grass when he was on field, with surging runs his trademark. "Oisin had made a return to play with our senior team, unfortunately his diagnosis prevented him from playing with his friends. "He did however fulfil a vital role for our senior team last year by being our 'Stats man' a role he fulfilled with due diligence. "Our deepest condolences go out to Oisin's mother Veronica, the whole Cassidy family and Oisin's friends and teammates. "As a mark of respect all club activities will be postponed until after Oisin is laid to rest."

Owners remove £195,000 Grade 2-winning horse from Gordon Elliott's yard with his blessing and send to his protege

It was Elliott's suggestion the horse could benefit from a move FIND THE SPARK Owners remove £195,000 Grade 2-winning horse from Gordon Elliott's yard with his blessing and send to his protege GORDON ELLIOTT has given his blessing to a £195,000 Grade 2-winning superstar being removed from his yard - and sent to his protege. The legendary Irish handler believes a change of scenery at Olly Murphy's Warren Chase stables in Warwickshire could spark him back into life. Advertisement 2 American Mike actually beat future Ryanair winner Fact To File on chase debut - but has failed to hit the same heights since Credit: Sportsfile 2 Olly Murphy, who was former assistant to Gordon Elliott, will be tasked with bringing American Mike back to his best, after he left Elliott's Meath yard with his blessing Credit: PA American Mike, who is owned by Noel and Valerie Moran's Bective Stud, has some amazing back form but hasn't quite hit the heights expected. He beat subsequent Ryanair winner Fact To File by more than three lengths on chase debut. And he got the better of this year's Grand National hero Nick Rockett in a 3m chase on heavy at Navan in February 2024. But the eight-year-old son of Mahler hasn't won since - finishing in the places only once from seven further runs. Advertisement Elliott thinks the time is right to send him to Bet365 Gold Cup-winning trainer Murphy, his former assistant, to work his magic. Murphy has been busy in the horse transfer market this summer. He has acquired Cormac Farrell's recent Galway Listed hurdle winner Sticktotheplan. And former Nicky Henderson inmate Kingston Pride has arrived too after being sold for £285,000. Advertisement Both of those come loaded with potential, while the goal with American Mike is to bring him back to his former glory. Murphy told Racing TV's Josh Stacey: "He's been a horse who hasn't quite reached the expectations as a novice it looked like he might. "I am just starting to get to know him. "Gordon filled me in about him and it was actually Gordon who said the change of scenery would do him good. Advertisement "I'm very lucky to have a horse like him and hopefully he can be competitive in some handicap chases. "We're working as a team. Owners Noel and Valerie Moran who sponsor Gordon's yard are also good supporters of me. "Hopefully just a change of scenery will spark a small bit of a revival. "Albeit he has some good form from last season so it's not like he's completely gone off the face of the earth. Advertisement "We're not just trying to find something that was there three years ago, he has got recent form as well." Semi-final spot up for grabs as Ireland take on Germany

Ireland are eyeing a semi-final spot at the EuroHockey Championships in Monchengladbach, however, they will have to overcome the odds to make it through to the final four. Gareth Grundie's side have lost their opening two games to Netherlands and France, and will now have to beat hosts, Germany, by two goals to have a chance of progressing. Germany beat France in their opening game, and while they are ranked higher than Ireland, Grundie's side will take hope following their opponents' 5-1 capitulation to Netherlands. The Irish will also need results elsewhere to go in their favour, and they will be hoping that Netherlands can beat France in their final group game. That match takes place just before the Ireland v Germany fixture this evening. Netherlands have won both of their opening games and will secure top spot by avoiding defeat in their final pool game. Belgium, England, Scotland and Spain are competing for the other two semi-final places from Pool B.
