CISF gets new mandate to oversee cargo, baggage screening at airports amid high alert
New Delhi [India], May 10 (ANI): In a decisive move to strengthen aviation security, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has expanded the mandate of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to include direct oversight of cargo operations and the In-line Hold Baggage Screening System (ILHBSS) across civil airports in India.
According to an Official Memorandum (OM) dated Friday, the temporary arrangement will be in effect from May 9 to May 18, 2025. The decision comes in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which has led to heightened security concerns nationwide.
The enhancement of CISF's mandate is essential to reinforce security arrangements at all civil airports.
CISF has responded immediately and resumed oversight over cargo and baggage operations. CISF will oversee operations and the security of airport operators for ILHBSS. The directives also authorise CISF personnel to perform random checks and oversee access control to these critical facilities.
All the airports under the cover of CISF have already implemented the new strengthened system.
Before this directive, CISF's deployment as the primary aviation security force did not explicitly extend to the direct security and screening of cargo operations and the In-line Hold Baggage Screening System.
Earlier on Saturday, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and relevant aviation authorities have issued a series of notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports across Northern and Western India for all civil flight operations.
The NOTAM is effective from May 9, 2025, to May 14, 2025 (which corresponds to 0529 IST on May 15, 2025), due to operational reasons.
The list of 32 airports include Adhampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda, Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla, Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali (Bhuntar), Leh, Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala, Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar, Thoise and Uttarlai
A senior Ministry of Civil Aviation official informed that all civil flight activities at these airports will remain suspended during this period.
AAI has also extended the temporary closure of 25 segments of Air Traffic Service (ATS) routes within the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Regions (FIRs) due to operational reasons. (ANI)

As the mystery deepens over the murder of an Indore man during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, the police now claim that the victim's wife had an extramarital affair that allegedly drove her to hire contract killers to eliminate her husband. Raja Raghuvanshi, 29, and his newly married wife Sonam, 24, had gone missing on May 23. A week later, Raja's body was found in a gorge. A search was conducted for Sonam, who eventually turned up at her hometown a week later. Meghalaya cops believe she was in an extramarital affair that led to Raja's murder. She orchestrated the murder in connivance with her boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, and surrendered under pressure on June 8, according to them. Both were later arrested. Not much is known about Raj Kushwaha from official channels, but the victim's family has broken its silence on this person. Raj was Sonam's employee, and they would speak on the phone a lot, claimed Vipul Raghuvanshi, Raja Raghuvanshi's brother. "I've never seen Raj Kushwaha; I have just heard his name. Sonam can be involved in this," he told ANI. The couple had initially planned to visit the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati, he claimed, raising doubts over the sudden change in plan that landed them in neighbouring Meghalaya. "We don't know which of the two planned their visit to Meghalaya. They did not book any return tickets," he added. Sonam being alive has also raised suspicion among the family members of Raja Raghuvanshi. Sachin, another brother of the victim, asked, "Sonam being found alive raises questions. Who were the other people who killed Raja?" Raja and Sonam got married on May 11. They left for their honeymoon on May 20. A day later, the couple were in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, nestled in the lap of lush peaks. On May 23, they went missing and their scooty was found abandoned nearby. The husband's body was found on June 2 with evidence that he was hacked to death with a machete. Sonam, however, remained untraceable until June 8. Last night, she reached Ghazipur, her hometown, and contacted her brother. She was swooped away by the cops minutes later, according to multiple accounts by the UP Police and her family. Uttar Pradesh police claimed they found Sonam distraught and unwell at a dhaba in Nandganj, while Meghalaya cops asserted she "voluntarily surrendered" at the police station. Three others, including two from Indore and one from Lalipur in Uttar Pradesh," said Meghalaya police. The difference in police versions is also reflected in the statements of the two families. Sonam's family came out in her support and outright denied that she could murder her husband. "She cannot do this. They got married with the consent of both families. My daughter came to a dhaba in Ghazipur last night and called her brother. Police went to the dhaba and she was taken from there," said Devi Singh, Sonam's father.

Raja Raghuvanshi murder: Wife Sonam, 3 more held in Meghalaya honeymoon horror case — Who are they?
Days after Raja Raghuvanshi's dead body was recovered, his wife Sonam and four others have been booked for allegedly planning his murder, news agency PTI reported. The couple went missing during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. While Sonam and three others are arrested, the police are still searching for the fourth accused in the case. Here are key details on others accused in the case — The three accused were arrested in overnight raids, while Sonam surrendered before the police in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang told PTI. Among the three accused, one person was apprehended from Uttar Pradesh, while two others were arrested from Madhya Pradesh's Indore, the DGP said. Sonam allegedly hired the arrested men to kill her husband, Nongrang added. "The operation is still continuing in Madhya Pradesh to catch some more persons involved in the crime," she said. Earlier, Albert Pde, a tourist guide in Mawlakhiat, revealed that an Indore couple were spotted with three on May 23, the day they went missing, the report said. Albert mentioned that he saw the couple climbing over 3,000 steps with three men, heading from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat at around 10 a.m. on May 23. He said that the three men with the couple were speaking in Hindi, suggesting that they were not from the region. The guide recognised the couple as he offered them services on May 22 to climb down the living root bridge in Nongriat. However, the couple refused his services and hired another guide. 24-year-old Sonam Raghuvanshi was found at Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. She was sent to Sadar Hospital for initial treatment and then kept in the One Stop Centre in Ghazipur, ANI reported, citing ADG Law and Order, Uttar Pradesh, Amitabh Yash. Following the arrest of Sonam and others, Meghalaya CM appreciated the state police for quick action. In a post on X, Sangma wrote, 'Within 7 days a major breakthrough has been achieved by the #meghalayapolice in the Raja murder case … 3 assailants who are from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested, female has surrendered and operation still on to catch 1 more assailant .. well done.' Sangma's statement comes after he had assured a thorough probe and immediate action over the incident, while the families of Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi demanded CBI probe. Both Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi are residents of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. On 22 May, they checked into a homestay at Nongriat village in the East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. The couple went missing after checking out from the homestay on 23 May. Later, Raja's body was recovered from a gorge near Sohra.
